Chapter 2 - No Place for A Protagonist

Haste continues trailing through the forest with confidence in each step, thoughts pass his head, some he tries his best to ignore or explain to himself in the best way possible. He thinks further as he moves to the next patch of grass highlighted by sunlight, "That spider thing makes me fairly sure that humanity exists out there, that babbling with its mimic of whatever its last victim was, that must've been language. Guess I seriously owe my thanks to whoever that was, gives me a little hope." Haste reaches the next spot and decides to take a rest, he's already walked pretty far, already having traversed thirty-seven of the inconsistent spots of sun and grass. He slumps on the grass and sits against a tree with a sigh as he looks down at his torn, bloody clothing, "I'm lucky the breeze here is warm, these clothes would do me no good in the cold..." Haste rips a piece of loose cloth string off of his hoodie as he thinks this, "So what's up with this rebirth anyways?" Haste starts to ponder as the breeze rustles the leaves so far above him, "In this situation wouldn't I be the main character? In nearly all of those stories the main character gets some power or advantage, right? Or at least a message from a celestial being, so far I've gotten neither, though I feel like I've seriously earned it at this point. I've evaded death twice, or once I guess? But I still lost everybody I used to know, though I guess that's not much..." He trails off as he says that line, considering family, friends, and coworkers, "But I do feel bad for ditching Sebastia- wait no he had other friends... Well maybe I didn't lose much there, but I still died painfully! At least chat with me if you're gonna thrust me into an unknown world!" Haste is speaking aloud now as he looks up with his arms set atop his knees with his hands dangling from his wrist, "Or maybe I'm one of those 'against the odds' guys? I guess that'd still be possible?" Haste sighs discontentedly as he says this before speaking to himself again, "Well, no matter what, I shouldn't take my chances; my first priority is finding what that monster with the whip tongue was mimicking... Also to avoid that damn dinosaur." Haste says the last part with a shiver as he stands up and stretches a bit before starting the walk to a more distant path of grass again. As he does, however, in the middle of the trees he sees a strange, small animal that looks like somebody took a cat and beaver and stuck them together before giving it nails the length of Haste's forearm, it makes eye contact with Haste, setting its ears back as its pupils dilate or more of; all four of them do, two in each of its large eyeballs, its flat tail slaps against the tree before it turns on a dime and thrusts itself up the tree with lateral bounds upwards, launching itself with its long nails. "Woah, wonder what that was?" Haste spoke in curiosity as he started back up, "It is weird though, I haven't actually seen much wildlife on this walk, is life uncommon here or something? Or maybe..." Haste paused as he realized something, a quote he used to find interesting to repeat in games he'd play, "When there aren't any piranhas in the water, there's a shark" as the quote crawled through Haste's brain he kept himself paused, muttering a bit as he did "Oh crap..." Haste looks around as if the "shark" would just suddenly appear, but to his relief, nothing appears, but the fear of it being nearby remained, "Maybe it was just the dinosaur monster... Right? That thing's already gone..." Haste takes a deep breath as he pushes on, holding onto that belief, though he does speed up.

Half an hour of walking passes by as Haste notices the trees growing less plentiful and grass patches becoming more common, he's already hoped this means he's almost out of this forest that makes seeing any structures difficult and has sped up even more hoping he'll be reaching somewhere emptier soon, currently on his way to a different grass patch he hears his worst fear, not the belch roar, not the mimicking cries of a spider beast, not even the start of thunder and rain, though he has worried about it raining something like rocks here. No, he hears a thundering sound bounce off trees and echo across the large trees, A sound that feels like a detonation of screaming monsters, as if a chorus, no a stadium of people all screamed at once, but more grotesque sounding, like fictional dragons, would always be imagined to sound in games, movies, or anywhere in pop-culture. The mighty roar shakes Haste as he feels static in the wind, the hair on his head rises as if somebodies put a balloon over his head after they rubbed it against their shirt. Without a single thought Haste runs as fast as he can, the forest grows less dense, making it easier to do so as he starts hearing a strange consistent rumble echo through the forest, only pausing now and then as static fills the air again, Haste pushes himself harder, suddenly no patches of grass come into view from the forest, no a field of grass does instead, exactly like the empty plains you'd see as a desktop wallpaper, just what he was hoping for. Yet the roar comes again, only louder than before as the static in the air is enough to lightly shock any of his exposed skin, stinging considerably "Agh!" Haste yelps at the shock as he pulls his hands into his sleeves and pulls his hoodie over his face, "It's closer!?" Haste looks around again only to see what is definitely the monster's trail to his right in the forest, a long carved path where blue pulses of static electricity volt out now and then, the path looks as if Haste could fit two of himself into, and he remembers being a bit under six foot so that width scares him considerably, so the hope that he's measuring it out wrong due to its considerable distance from him faintly emerges, though still being in view is too close for comfort, "Crap! Its trail also leads into the field--" Haste sees it as he yells, a large monster that pulls itself around on two front legs, dragging a long torso and waist through the dirt as it does, stretching pretty far, at least two houses long, a serpentine head sticks close to the torso with long shiny teeth sticking out of its sides, its entire body is covered in black matted wool, electricity springs out of the wool as it steps with another one of its arms, Haste sees it has a six-fingered wool-covered hand with shiny claws extending from the middle of its fingers, each claw has electricity running up it like they're constantly getting a charge from the matted wool. Haste hides behind a tree after he got as good of a look at it as possible, though he still peaks out in curiosity. He watches it slither the same way he was going to go, Haste gets very angry at this sight, yelling in his head as he clenches his fist and sets his head behind the tree with the rest of his body, "No! No! No! Pleaaaase! I've come so far..! I just want to be--" the roar repeats as Haste peaks again covering his face from the static with his slightly torn sleeves, he sees the beast in a standoff with a group of bipedal, shorter animals carrying what looks like weap-- "Wait..." Haste squints his eyes before they open in amazement. "Humans!?" Haste whisper shouts behind the tree as he moves up to the closest tree he can hide behind, allowing for a better view, though the humanoid shapes are still hard to make out, the beast sure isn't, towering over them and shorter then the second monster Haste saw before. Electricity courses through the air, still shocking Haste and raising his hair, even more, he feels lucky he kept his face covered as the shocks that creep in through tears in his clothes almost burns. Haste winces but keeps his eyes on the standoff, he sees there are four of the humanoids, one in the front carries a large shield and large crossbow, the shield glows green, and he also carries a quiver on his back; full of arrows in varying shapes, as Haste makes out the person to their left a bit behind the first, he can see they carry a massive battle axe with three protruding spikes sticking out of the top, behind them is a person carrying a knife with a thin blade that glows a soft cyan with a strange vial sticking out of the hilt of it, along with throwing knives in their other hand that glow red with a smaller vial attached to them, and finally, behind them is somebody holding a bow the size of themself and most of the other group, they also have a quiver on their backs with large arrows pointed out from it. The monster they oppose opens its mouth revealing its reflective teeth at the party as they all line up behind the shielded person who raises it in front of their entire body, suddenly a bolt of electricity fires out from its fangs and fire into the shield, which easily defuses the attack, the monster roars again, trying to intimidate the group, hurting Haste's ears as it does, oddly enough, however, the members look unaffected by the close range roar, instead the battle axe person immediately somehow carries the large weapon over to the monster as it's still roaring, Haste sees one of the throwing knives thrown by the dagger person, stabbing the battle axe person in the back, Haste thinks its a betrayal but nobody seems to care; in fact, the battle axe person ignores it, doing an overhead swing at the monster, missing it as it dodges out of the way, but making a very audible slam into the ground and embeds itself into the dirt. The person starts trying to pull out the weapon, only for the monster to go for an attack on them, it dives down, opening its mouth to bite into the person, only for a ballista-sized arrow to hit it in the shoulder, recoiling it from the attack as the battle axe is ripped out, and angled for the prongs on the end to point at the creatures head, nothing happens for a moment as Haste wonders what's happening, the creature takes the moment to swipe at them with its right arm, only for the three prongs to fire out of the tip of the battle axe with a blast, embedding themselves into the chin of the monster as it screams in pain, but the monster's attack doesn't stop, it connects the swipe against the person, sounds of thunder cracks against them as it does, the persons sent flying into the rest of the group as another large arrow flies into the monster's arm, clearly hurting it again. Haste turns his attention to the injured person as the dagger person is now kneeling over them with the dagger raised. Haste knows the positioning all too well, a strike of trauma hits him as he relives the stabbing he went through, somehow it feels like he can't breathe again, as if the knife is back and puncturing his lungs, as he kneels covering his stomach, removing his arms from his face as electricity stings every part of it. Haste feels like he needs to yell, yet feels too short of breath to even get a whimper out. He sees the dagger person strike it down at the battle axe person, who isn't even fighting, only the dagger user stops before it fully goes through, instead, it only looks like the tip buries itself, Haste can make out the vial emptying a bit as the injured person launches up, somehow looking healthy again. "What..? No, no but..." Haste comes to his senses thanks to the static burning his face, his eyes widen before his arms shoot back up, covering his face once more and muffling a yelp of pain. Looking back at the monster he sees the shield-bearer with a different-looking weapon, the shield bearers shield is gone, instead, the crossbow is now glowing green and much larger, they fire arrows that are bursting into mud against the monster still standing over the lone battle axe while being overpowered by this fire as well as the ballista arrows digging into it as well. It looks as if it has lost its electric charge as red blood bursts out from the wounds, suddenly Haste sees a blinding yellow light come from the large bow user, and as his eyes barely adjust he sees it's the tip of an even larger arrow about to be launched, and so it is with a thundering whip-crack as the bowstring ejects it towards the beast, hitting it square in the skull, as soon as it does; an explosion rings out, forcing Haste to close his eyes at the sudden burst of light and noise, when he reopens them he sees the party celebrating together, all sheathing their weapons, accept the battle axe user who retrieves their battle axe and waits for the others by the monster. Haste notices its head is somehow still in one piece even after the explosion that should've decimated it. "Woah..." Haste feels the air around him calm down and lose the static it was carrying, he unblocks his face and rubs his eyes. The slight tinge of static remains and his hair still sticks up on both his body and head, but he starts running over to the group, hoping they can answer a bunch of his questions, bursting from the trees he can see them more clearly standing next to the defeated monster as he enters the fields.
