THE JOURNEY back to the Pei Clan had been quiet.
After several days in Yan, everyone was exhausted, and even Bai Yichen had little interest in talking.
Lily sat inside the carriage with Silas on top of her head, sleeping.
Then, an explosion suddenly sounded in the distance, shaking the carriage and waking Lily.
Another explosion followed, then another.
"Stop," Elder Yanshu called from outside.
The carriage came to a halt. Lily stepped out and found Yichen and the twins already looking into the distance, where smoke rose beyond the trees.
Yichen frowned. "That direction…"
"The Lu Clan," Elder Yanshu said.
Another explosion shook the ground. For a moment, no one spoke before Elder Yanshu turned toward the driver. "Go."
They changed direction.
The closer they came to the Lu Clan, the more frequent the explosions became. Smoke covered part of the sky, and by the time the entrance to the Lu estate came into view, Lily could already see what was causing them.
