In the midst of a hazy consciousness, I heard Karl talking on the phone. Then came the sound of a door opening, followed by the sagging of the bed near me. Karl bent down and asked whether I wanted to continue sleeping or have something to eat.
I nestled back under the covers for a moment and asked what time it was. "10 o'clock," he replied. I drooped my eyelids and reached for my phone beneath the pillow. A cold metal object was handed to me.
"Roland called," Karl informed me.
I suddenly snapped awake, sitting up and anxiously scrolling through my phone. Karl, running his fingers through my long hair, mentioned that I had asked my friend to leave.
"Let's eat first," he suggested.
I shook my head, cleared my throat, and accessed my contacts. Karl, understanding my intention, moved to the sofa, maintaining a distance as he quietly unpacked the delivered meal. He overheard me stumbling through an explanation to my mom and heard me say I would be home soon.
