CHAPTER START---

---Saturday, October 27th, X770, Magnolia, 10 AM…

"Mornin' Gran," Oberon says as he enters Magnolia's Magic Shop, wearing his usual Job outfit and carrying a sheet of paper in his hand.

Looking toward the counter he doesn't see anyone there, so he shrugs and begins looking at the items on display.

"She's in the back, she'll be with you in a few minutes," a girly voice says from the other side of the store.

Oberon turns around, still not seeing anyone, so he walks around the store to the other side, finding a girl who appears to be around his age, if not slightly older, clearing some of the glass cases on the bottom shelf.

She had long black hair, caucasian skin, and was wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, under an apron, along with some simple slippers.

"Huh, I didn't know other people worked here," Oberon says. "So, did any cool new Magic Items come in this past week?"

"I only help dad and grandma on the weekends, during the week I help mom at the general store," the girl says. "And I think some Magic Rings came in yesterday, they should be over there."

Without looking she points to a display case behind him.

"Thanks," Oberon turns around and begins reading the tags on the rings.

After a few seconds, he frowns, not seeing anything that's both useful and wouldn't violate his agreement with Master Makarov.

"Ugh, I can't get any of these," he groans.

"If you don't have any money just leave, this isn't a place to be standing around doing nothing," the girl says with a bit of venom in her words, surprising him.

Oberon turns around to see her standing there, hands on her hips, glaring at him.

The moment she sees his face her eyes widen, "Uh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was you," she hastily says. "It's nice to meet you, I'm Alana," she puts out her hand for him to shake, only for him to glance down at the wet glove that was holding the cloth she cleaned with.

"Uh…"

"Sorry," she quickly retracts her hand. "It really is nice to meet you, you're our number one customer!"

"Thanks?" Oberon gives her a cautious look. "So, you're her granddaughter?"

"Yeah, my family owns the Magic Shop and a General Store over on Main Street."

"That's pretty cool, that means you must have a pretty awesome Magic right?" Oberon says, excitedly.

"Actually," the girl frowns. "I'm not a Mage, at all, I don't even have enough Magic Energy to activate Magic Items."

"Oh," the girl physically winces as she sees all the excitement and interest he had in this conversation evaporate. "Well, it was nice meeting you, Alana."

Oberon walks over to some other shelves, looking at some other Magic Items he was interested in.

As Oberon walks away the girl glares at him, her brown eyes shifting to study his every move.

"You know you're kind of a jerk," she says, walking over to where he's reading about a Magic Mirror.

Oberon doesn't look away from the item as he speaks, "Says the girls following me around the store to bother me."

"I just thought you'd be nicer, that's all."

"What made you think that?"

"Sorcerer Weekly," she says while rolling her eyes, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "They always talk about how great you are, but you just walked away from me. Do people who can't use Magic not matter to you?"

That question gets his attention away from the Magic Items, "It's not that you don't matter, just, I'm trying to learn Magic–as much as I can–and I can't learn anything from you."

"I could teach you how not to be a jerk, how about that?"

"You're the only person to ever complain about that. I think once I never talk to you again, I'll be fine," Oberon says, and he can see from her expression that she can't even process his response. "And for the record, Sorcerer Weekly sends the pretty reporters to get answers from Macao and Wakaba. I never talk to them myself."

"Tch," she folders her arms and looks away from him, a deep frown on her face. "You picked a stupid title."

"Excuse me?"

"Your title, 'Oberon', they should call you something with 'Cosmic' in it instead."

"Oberon is my name, like, when I was born," he says, already knowing where this was going.

Alana gives him a genuinely perplexed look, "Wait, your name is 'Oberon', as in 'King Of The Fairies', and you joined 'Fairy Tail', is this a joke?"

"N—"

Alana immediately doubles over, laughing at him, to the point that she has tears in her eyes.

Oberon grumbles some words of annoyance under his breath, experiencing this for the hundredth time doesn't make it any less annoying for him.

After a few more moments Alana stops laughing and catches her breath, seeing him glaring at her.

"Are you done laughing at the Wizard that can squash you with a thought, while having no Magic to defend yourself?"

She immediately shuts up, "You…you wouldn't, right?"

"No, but you should keep that in mind when you laugh at people in the future."

She swallows nervously, "Right, sorry."

"Whatever, everyone thinks it's a funny coincidence anyway, and Sorcerer Weekly doesn't even know it's my name, so everyone thinks it's just my Wizard title."

Seeing his dejected expression, Alana tries her best to give him a soft smile, cheering him up. "I've read that story, with mom when she was teaching me to read, about Oberon, the Fairy who figured out how to heal their forest, and was named king of it, it's a great story, and a great name."

"Yeah, mom read me that story all the time, I always thought it was pretty cool."

"Yeah, and it's kind of cute since you're in Fairy Tail."

Oberon groans loudly as he begins laughing again.

"Hey, you should come to my birthday party tomorrow," Alana says. "It'll be fun, and dad said when I turned ten he'd get me something special, I'm hoping for a kitty."

"Sorry but I won't be in Magnolia, I'm actually heading to the train station for a Job after I leave here," Oberon says.

"Well, I'll probably see you around sometime, be sure to say 'hi', ok?"

"Uh, sure," Oberon doubts they'd ever meet outside of the Magic Shop, since he's rarely ever anywhere but his apartment, the Guildhall, or Magic Shop while in Magnolia.

"So you can make friends, that's a relief," Gran says as she interrupts their conversation.

"I can do things other than Magic," Oberon says.

"I was actually talking to that one," she points at Alana, glaring at the girl. "Don't you have some shelves to clean?"

"Yes Grandma," Alana stares at the floor as she scurries away.

Oberon walks over to the woman and hands her the paper, "Is she in trouble or something?"

"They only send her here when her mom can't handle her anymore," the woman says while reading his list. "You trying to learn Cloud Magic?"

"No, that book isn't for me, but the others are."

"Makes sense, why learn Cloud Magic when you can already fly," the woman says. "These other Grimoires are for Enchantment Magic…that makes things a bit difficult."

"Really?"

"Enchantment Magic is a very profitable industry, so the people who know it are very picky with who they teach it to, these Grimoires will take a lot of time and Jewels to find and buy."

"Will this be a problem?"

"I recommend holding off on any large purchases for a while, even for a wallet as big as yours, this is going to hurt."

"Well, all my money goes to learning Magic anyway, so this doesn't make much of a difference," Oberon says. "Any idea how many Jewels or how long this will take?"

"I know a few Enchanters, none good enough to write a Grimoire, but maybe they can help me find one for you."

"Ok, I'll leave it to you then," Oberon says. "Now, I need to get to the train station, Master Makarov let me take two Jobs at once so I can't disappoint him!"

"Well don't let me keep you any longer," the woman says before Oberon leaves.

As the door closes behind Oberon, he leaps and flies over the city toward the train station.

A few moments later Gran' frowns and calls out to her granddaughter, "Alana!"

"Yes grandmother!" the girl says as she rushes over to the counter, scared.

The woman glares down at the girl, "Were you bothering him?"

"No grandmother, we were only talking, I swear!"

The woman narrows her eyes even more and leans down toward the girl, "Your parents are too soft, and you've become a spoiled little monster because of it, but if you ever act like that toward my customers. I will have them send you to the Royal Army Academy, understand?"

"Yes grandmother!" she nods enthusiastically while almost crying.

"Now finish cleaning the shelves, you'll be dusting the storage room next…"
