The trebuchets that Valov brought in had longer reach than the ones they saw in Ferrol. Even with the high-level walls and extra distance created by the loose sentries, it could still hit the walls, as well as the sentries.

It was too idiotic to go through the existing defense. Naturally, they ought to take down the sentries that could cause them trouble. Anyway, they didn't need to take down all sentries, just those along their path.

There were several trebuchets, and many continued to travel to target other parts of the walls. There were at least 2 trebuchets per section, continuously targeting essential spots.
Some targeted the loose sentries, some the sentries along the walls, and some hit directly at the walls. The sentries naturally had higher defenses than just the walls, so it would take them far longer to take them down, but unlike others, Valov knew what to target first.
