Chapter 8 - chapter 8: The First Editor

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Kael moved toward the chapel door.

"Wait," Lyra whispered.

She reached into her satchel and removed a small silver mirror.

She angled it toward the entrance.

Kael expected to see a reflection.

Instead...

The mirror remained empty.

Lyra inhaled sharply.

"No reflection..."

"The First Editor."

The knocking stopped.

A calm voice drifted through the old wooden door.

"You've grown quite troublesome, Reader."

The door opened by itself.

A man in a charcoal-gray suit stepped inside.

He looked no older than thirty.

Dark hair.

Kind eyes.

An ordinary smile.

Too ordinary.

His face seemed impossible to remember. Every time Kael looked away, he struggled to recall what the man looked like.

The stranger bowed.

"My name no longer exists."

He looked at Evelyn.

"You've caused enough problems."

Evelyn hid behind Kael.

"I'm not going back."

"You don't have a choice."

The Editor snapped his fingers.

The chapel changed.

The broken walls became whole.

Candles lit themselves.

The roof repaired itself.

Time itself had been... edited.

Kael stared in disbelief.

"You didn't create this."

The Editor smiled.

"No."

"I simply restored an earlier draft."

The black book flew from Kael's hands.

It floated between them.

The Editor reached toward it.

"So many revisions..."

"So many unnecessary pages."

Before his fingers touched the cover, the book burst with brilliant white light.

A sentence appeared.

Readers may reject revisions.

The light threw the Editor backward.

His smile vanished.

For the first time...

He looked angry.

"Interesting."

He turned and walked toward the chapel exit.

"I'll see you at the Library."

"The final draft always begins there."

As he disappeared into the morning mist...

The chapel returned to ruins.

Chapter 9: The Library Between Worlds

Following clues hidden in the book, Kael, Lyra, and Evelyn traveled north through abandoned villages that no map recorded.

Each village looked lived in.

Meals still rested on tables.

Clothes fluttered on washing lines.

Yet there wasn't a single person.

"They were edited," Evelyn whispered.

"They're not dead."

"They've simply... never existed."

At sunset they reached a mountain unlike any Kael had ever seen.

Its peak disappeared into clouds made of flowing pages.

Hidden inside was a library with no end.

Millions of books stretched farther than sight.

Some glowed.

Others whispered.

Many screamed.

Lyra's voice shook.

"This..."

"This is where forgotten histories are kept."

An elderly librarian emerged from between the shelves.

He wore thick spectacles and carried a feather quill.

When he saw Kael...

He dropped every book in his hands.

"It can't be..."

He slowly approached.

Then fell to one knee.

"Welcome back."

Kael blinked.

"...You've mistaken me for someone else."

The old librarian looked into Kael's eyes.

"No."

"I've been waiting five hundred years."

"For the boy who would return carrying his own ending."

Before Kael could respond...

The black book opened.

Its pages turned wildly.

Not with words.

With pictures.

Kael saw himself.

Standing inside the library.

Older.

Scarred.

Holding Lyra as she cried.

Then...

He watched himself drive a sword through his own heart.

The vision ended.

The pages became blank.

Chapter 10: Just Another Tale

The library shook.

Books fell from endless shelves.

The old librarian whispered one name.

"The Author."

A deep voice echoed from everywhere at once.

"You finally arrived."

The shelves parted like a sea.

At the center of the library stood a throne built entirely from books.

No one sat upon it.

Only a single quill floated above the seat.

Writing by itself.

Each stroke of ink echoed through reality.

Kael took one step forward.

The quill stopped moving.

A fresh page appeared in the black book.

It contained only one sentence.

Congratulations, Kael Rowan.

You have survived the Prologue.

The floor beneath him dissolved into black ink.

Kael, Lyra, and Evelyn plunged into darkness.

Far above, the old librarian smiled through tears.

"The story..."

"...has finally begun."
