When Terrance finished speaking, the Froakie's hostility remained unchanged.
After it launched another attack, Froakie fainted for the second time.
This time, the expression on its face was one of a nightmare.
Meanwhile, Terrance shot Togepi an unfriendly look and sent out Mismagius to discipline it. In the next moment, Togepi was dragged into an endless illusion, struggling in despair.
Having dealt with the two nuisances, Terrance turned his gaze back to the black market, now in complete disarray. All that remained was to wait for the police to arrive.
With Mismagius delivering additional blows, none of the poacher gang members regained consciousness by the time Jenny and Joy arrived with a large police force.
For the island's residents, the arrival of the police was an extremely rare sight.
The inhabitants of the maritime city all wore stunned expressions, unable to understand why the police had mobilized such a large force this time. In the past, it had only ever been small-scale routine inspections. But this time, dozens of officers had been dispatched… Only those who knew of the black market's existence understood what was really going on.
As the police forcefully took over the black market and entered the poachers' headquarters to make arrests…
"Captain, you've worked hard. You're not hurt, are you?" Jade Joy was the first to rush to Terrance's side after landing on the island, asking him with concern.
"Not at all…"
Lan Jenny was unwilling to be outdone and stepped closer as well. Of course, besides expressing their concern, their main purpose was to warn Terrance, to tell him that next time, he absolutely had to wait until everyone had arrived before taking action.
"I understand," Terrance said, pretending to take their words to heart.
If he waited for everyone to gather before acting, how would he get the chance to temper Togepi?
Speaking of Togepi, just as Terrance was about to recall the little fellow, he saw Togepi stubbornly pointing at the still-unconscious Froakie and began bargaining with him.
"You little…" Terrance frowned, his expression turning unfriendly again, frightening Togepi into taking a small step back.
Togepi's request was to take Froakie in as its underling. After briefly experiencing Froakie's special ability, Togepi felt that this Froakie might be able to become its very own "ability extractor"!
As long as it could trigger the Skill Swap move through its Super Luck constitution, it could endlessly enjoy Froakie's special ability.
Moreover, Togepi had another plan. This Froakie clearly looked to it for leadership and obeyed its every word. It had also shown extreme distrust toward humans. Togepi believed that if it teamed up with this Froakie, its chances of escaping from Terrance's grasp would be much higher.
"Togepi, Togepi—"
"Togepi, Togepi—"
Although it had noticed Terrance's dissatisfaction, Togepi was quite skilled at reading people. It continued laying out its conditions.
As long as Terrance agreed to its request, it would obediently complete the one hundred tasks Terrance assigned to it.
"Are you serious?" Terrance looked at Togepi, whose face was brimming with righteous sincerity, with suspicion.
The next moment, Terrance fell into thought.
When Togepi made its request, Terrance had also begun considering the matter. After thinking it over, he looked at the unconscious Froakie and sighed.
This Froakie was pitiful as well. Its hatred toward humans stemmed entirely from its own tragic experiences.
At first, Terrance had never considered capturing it. Generally speaking, unless it was a Fairy-type Pokémon, or possessed extraordinary potential or something exceptionally special, Terrance simply didn't have the energy to train it. On top of that, this Froakie clearly rejected humans, which made Terrance even less inclined to cause himself trouble.
If not for Togepi's request drawing his attention to Froakie, Terrance might have simply left.
"This Froakie distrusts humans deeply because it was captured by poachers. If handed over to the police, it would either be sent back to Kalos or transferred and released. With its temperament, it would probably end up going down the wrong path in the end…"
"But speaking of which, Protean is indeed a terrifying ability."
Thinking of Togepi's earlier performance, Terrance couldn't help but exclaim.
The Protean Ability allows a Pokémon to change its own type to match the type of the move it uses. In real combat, this ability is practically like giving a Pokémon a cheat code, enabling it to wield moves of any type with complete mastery.
Togepi's powerful use of Flamethrower and Psychic just now was precisely thanks to its change in type.
"It already performed remarkably well on Togepi, what if it were used on other Pokémon?"
With the premise of capturing Froakie in mind, Terrance began to think, searching for possible training directions for it.
If Gallade were to master Skill Swap and temporarily obtain Protean from Froakie, would its type-based slashes become even stronger?
If the Skill Swap move could be further developed, could Gardevoir use it to temporarily exchange Froakie's Ability with Altaria's Cloud Nine Ability?
Taking advantage of Protean's unique traits, Altaria might be able to train the Flame of Life more efficiently.
And what if Arcanine were to gain Protean…?
"Combining power with Ability and Skill Swap move is indeed another solid tactical approach." Terrance was intrigued.
"From this perspective, this Froakie might have even more potential for development. I remember Froakie has the aptitude to learn Camouflage. Perhaps within Fairy Aura, it could transform into a Fairy type. Besides that, it can also learn the move Role Play…"
Camouflage: Changes its type depending on the surrounding environment, such as water's edge, in grass, or in a cave.
Role Play: Mimics the opponent, changing its own Ability to match the opponent's.
"In that case, based on these two moves, not only could Greninja use Skill Swap in battle to pass its powerful Ability to other Pokémon that need it, but it could also use Role Play to regain that powerful Ability afterward. In other words, by combining the two moves, it would effectively create two Pokémon with Protean at the same time."
"Additionally, there's another application. Within Fairy Aura, Greninja could use Camouflage to become a Fairy type. Although it cannot naturally learn Fairy-type moves, it could use Role Play to copy Mega Altaria's Pixilate Ability, gaining control over Fairy-type energy and converting its moves into Fairy type. That way, a Fairy-type Greninja capable of using Fairy-type moves would be born…"
Terrance rubbed his head. The series of transformations described above involved an Inherited Move and extended applications of Skill Swap. Such a training strategy was something ordinary Trainers would absolutely be unable to handle. Although Terrance had sorted out some of the key points, the actual value of training it in this way still needed verification.
If any Trainer knew that Terrance had conceived of such a complex tactical combination in a single instant, they would probably be utterly astonished.
