Chapter 61 - Fate of the city

Only winners write history.

A drop of black ink fell from the quill onto the piece of paper.

The law stands only on the side of the victor.

Teachers were scrambling to their respective classes. Students were chattering with one another. A finger ran over a dusty globe and spun it. Devina gently blew the dust off of the globe before looking at each one of the countries.

She chuckled a bit as her finger landed on the country Wien. It was amusing, she thought. How humans perceive justice and law. To all stand equal before the scale. But it was utter rubbish. After the Luvian-Fukviyian war those who had sided with the Luvian Empire were prosecuted in Fukviyu. They were trialed for crimes against humanity and a multitude of war crimes. Had it been the Luvian Empire who won, those who sided with Fukviyu would have been charged with the same crimes.

Devina let go of her finger from the spinning globe.

"Humans are so dumb."

Why does a guilty man have the right to judge another guilty man?

At the Fivindus estate

The sound of the hard tip of a quill hitting the paper over and over again echoed in the room. Eirlys had written a documentation of the war of Wien. She called the book she was writing "True History". In it was documentation from all of the wars all across the world and wars throughout history. It also included the countries' economic and political status. Motives for war and consequences of certain political reforms.

Aylin asked Eirlys if they shouldn't tell the clan head about Selina being in Wien and aiding the Umstürzlers. Eirlys only waved her hand, putting Aylin's proposal off the table.

"Uncle Etros already knows that his daughter is in Wien. Don't underestimate the intelligence network of the Fivindus family."

"Then why isn't he doing anything?" Aylin pressed on.

"The situation is complicated, this war was a civil war between the Umstürzlers and Königsteuers. Had the Fivindus family taken a stance in the war then they would directly be interfering with the kingdom of Fukviyu, who had before stated that no noble family should act outside of their zone. Meaning that we Fivindus would be going against the wishes of the Royal family, which means those who break this rule aren't considered a part of their family anymore according to the Royal family. Therefore no longer under their protection. If Uncle broke this rule he would put the entire Fivindus family into trouble."

Aylin's eyebrows furrowed hearing Eirlys' explanation.

"That's enough about politics, shall we eat something?" Eirlys closed her book and set aside her quill.

Aylin and I agreed and we headed to the restaurant.

While we were eating I asked Eirlys what type of Aeon affiliation she had, to which she calmly said that she had none.

"Then how did you produce those lox stones?"

She picked up a knife and pointed at herself.

"My body has loxes but I have no affiliation. Therefore I had to experiment, whenever I poured my loxes into lox stones they would crack. You could say that loxes from Aeons are positively charged and the lox stone itself is negatively charged. Normally they would just flow into the lox stone but you could say mine are not charged at all. So the lox stones remain negatively charged but the amount of loxes in it keeps increasing which leads to it breaking. And… after some experimentation I finally found a way to store my loxes into lox stones!" She pointed her fork up into the air and then at the both of us.

"I used people who had Aeonic affiliation and had them fill a tiny amount of their loxes into the stone first. And the shocking thing I found was that that tiny amount was enough to convert all of my neutral loxes into positive ones. It was almost like a chain reaction. Truly a fascinating process."

"Isn't that quite a discovery?" Aylin asked.

"I don't really care about the credit, as long as it helps me carry around lox stones for energy."

Aylin asked me if anything about what she just said had been mentioned in class, which I shook my head.

"Then… Eirlys! Could I perhaps publish this discovery at the Royal Academy?" she asked with excitement.

"Well go ahead, just don't mention my name."

"Why?"

"It's just trouble if my name is out there," she said, sighing.

"Well if you say so. Thank you, Eirlys!"

"Eirlys, you are pretty much an expert in history and Aeons, right?"

"I wouldn't say I know that much about Aeons."

Disappointment washed over me at her answer.

"But have you ever heard of the thirteenth Aeon in history?"

"The thirteenth Aeon?"

"I don't believe I have heard anything like that. But there is something familiar that I have heard. About an Aeon that existed before all the other Aeons. Though the information was very vague and old, it stated that the world had only one Aeon at one point in history. The Aeon then fragmented into pieces creating the Aeons we know today. The story was very weird though, so I don't know if it was truly trustworthy. The name of the author had also been wiped."

"I see, thank you."

"You all! I know yours truly is the most helpful but STOP SHOWERING ME IN YOUR PRAISE! A general doesn't need gratitude." She said, posing with her curled hands in front of her face.

Aylin then asked with worried eyes what would become of the citizens of Wien, to which Eirlys responded that intensive labor to aid in the war effort towards the Luvian Empire was the most likely outcome.

"Is there nothing that can be done to help them?"

"The Fivindus family won't be interfering in this matter," Eirlys said coldly.

In the underground city of Nautilus

Organisms were floating in clear tanks filled with dark green liquid. Bubbles blew from the fish-like organism while Matiligax observed it carefully.

"Isn't this a bit expected, Salecha?"

"Indeed, Professor, it went exactly how you described."

His assistant stood there with pen and paper, noting down the organism in her notes.

"This is boring! I want something that completely turns my brain upside down! I WANT IT NOW, SALECHA!"

"I apologize, Professor, I don't know how to answer that request."

"Gah… Salecha how about you go and fetch me some of the research discoveries made by those fancy schmancy royal academics and see what they have been up to."

She bowed her head and walked away, the sound of her high heels echoing throughout the laboratory.

"Maybe I should harass Zyo about the use of her scythe to experiment on that. Yes! That sounds like a marvellous research material."

The sound of high heels echoed through the laboratory again. Salecha handed him a pile of research papers.

"As you requested, Professor."

"Let's see, let's see… boring! Rubbish! Another boring project!"

He threw away paper after paper.

"Why are these academics so obsessed with boring stuff!"

As he was about to throw away the rest of them something caught his eye. It was merely a glimpse but he recognized the colors immediately. He picked up the paper he had thrown into the trash and confirmed it with his eyes. It was the royal crest.

"My oh my… the Royal family sent me a letter?"

He carefully read through the letter and a wide sinister grin grew on his face. His tongue stuck out of his open mouth as he laughed.

His assistant stood quietly beside him with her eyes closed.

"Guess what, Salecha!"

"Yes, Professor?"

"They want me!"

"Professor?"

"The Royal family wants me to join their research project!" he laughed.

"That's wonderful, Professor."

"Indeed it is. It is, Salecha!"
