Chapter 2 - New Blood

Setting: Leone

Levi stood at the edge of Leone's bustling town square, arms folded across his chest, watching life move around him. The chatter of merchants, the clatter of carts, the laughter of children—it all felt distant as his thoughts drifted inward. From a boy who had known nothing but hunger and loss, to captain of the local law division… it hadn't been an easy road.

He had never imagined himself as a lawman. Orphaned when a mining collapse claimed his parents, he'd survived on scraps, doing whatever he could to keep his younger sister alive. Survival was his only goal back then. And yet, the kindness he showed others in those desperate years—helping neighbors, sharing what little he had—laid the foundation for something more.

That "something" revealed itself the day of the robbery. Levi, still just a boy, had no training and no weapon. But when a thief threatened the general store, Levi acted—quick thinking and sheer grit enough to turn the tide. Captain Stone, the town's protector, noticed. He saw not just a reckless boy, but potential.

Stone ensured Levi's sister was sent safely to relatives in the capital, then took Levi under his own wing. He trained him in combat, discipline, and, most importantly, the meaning of true justice.

Years passed. Stone was gone now, but Levi carried his mantle. Captain of Leone's law division. Leader of a skilled team. Trusted protector of the town. The badge on his chest wasn't just a symbol—it was a promise.

And today, that promise would be tested with new responsibility. A fresh lieutenant was arriving—straight from the capital.

"Captain Levi? Excuse me, Captain?"

The voice pulled him from his thoughts. He turned to see a young woman striding across the square in a crisp uniform, her badge catching the morning sun. She stopped before him, posture sharp, eyes resolute.

"Lieutenant Lily, I take it?" Levi asked, extending a hand.

She gripped it firmly, her voice steady. "Yes, sir. It's a pleasure to be here."

Levi studied her for a moment. Determination. Fire. A spark he recognized—the same spark that once burned in him, and still did. He gave a small nod.

"Good. Let's get started. The command center's this way."

Setting: Local Station

The two entered the law division's headquarters, a sturdy stone building at the heart of Leone. As they walked the main corridor, they passed a plaque set into the wall.

To the Stone Wall That Protected Us – May He Live On in Our Hearts.

Levi's eyes lingered for a moment, then moved on.

"I've arranged a workspace for you," he said, opening the door to a modest office. "From today, this space is yours. Orientation begins tomorrow morning, seven sharp." He paused, then added, "We've only got one set of quarters for command staff, so you'll be rooming with me until we make other arrangements. You're making history here, Lieutenant—we've never had one before."

Lily gave a small, professional nod, though her expression remained serious.

Levi gestured toward the corner, where a handwritten sign hung above a battered trash can: Complaint Box.

She raised an eyebrow. Levi chuckled. "Come on, lighten up. If you can't find some humor in this job, you won't last long."
