Chapter 11 - The lie, I wanted to believe

“And then what did he say?” Ness leaned across the table, her elbows propped on the wood, chin resting in her hands. Her big brown eyes glimmered like she was perched on the edge of her seat for the next juicy twist of my story.

Honestly? I was pretty proud of myself for dragging it out so far.

I laughed, shaking my head at her expectant, nosy face. “Ness, you look funny.”

Her nose scrunched. “Funny how?”

“As if I’ve got the secret to some hidden treasure and you’re seconds away from robbing me blind.”

Her lips curled into a grin so wide it almost split her cheeks. “Obviously you do. And I’ll take it, thank you very much.”

“You’re impossible.”

It wasn’t news. Ness thrived on curiosity. If there was a locked box, she’d find the key. If there was a rumor, she’d sniff it out. Secrets were like oxygen to her, and right now, I was the source.
