Chapter 92 - 92 - Aang meets Sage

The Fire Nation stopped their attack when it was night. Even with all their superior numbers and technology, they would suffer heavy casualties if they attacked with the full moon in the night sky. Many were grateful for it from the Fire Nation, especially Admiral Zhao.

His words had ignited a fire in the hearts of his soldiers, but the scene from before was still fresh in their minds, and their morale was low; a night's rest would serve them well.

The next morning, the Fire Nation commenced their attack again. The northern water tribe deployed all their available soldiers and benders; they put up a fight fit for one of the four major nations, but alas, the Fire Nation army just kept on coming and pushing them further and further.

Soon, they were inside the city, pushing the water benders even further back inside. Most had started to lose hope. Sokka was one of them as he took down one fire nation soldier and bender after another. His performance was one of the best on the battlefield, but he couldn't turn the tables around by himself.

The red dragon was flying thousands of feet in the air, invisible to all and keeping a close eye on Sokka, ready to lend a hand in case of an emergency, but so far, he didn't need to interfere.

Spirit world

Opening his eyes, Aang abruptly sat up and looked around. He was on a wooden platform with an archway on top situated in the middle of a swamp.

He was confused for only a second before his expression brightened, "I did it, I am in the spirit world!" he said in happiness as he started looking around, spotting a white-haired monkey in monk cloth sitting below a tree on the other end of the swamp. Aang jumped towards him.

"OMMMM – OMMMM." The monkey kept repeating the same mantra as he sat in a meditative position with his legs crossed and eyes closed. Sensing someone approaching, he opened one eye before swiftly closing it again.

"Hello, I am sorry to disturb you, but I really need to find the moon and the ocean spirits," said Aang as he stood before the monkey.

"Go away." That was all Aang received as a reply, making him freeze in place. This wasn't what he had expected. He didn't know what to do or how to converse with this monkey.

The monkey opened one eye again before asking, as if surprised, "You're still here?"

"Yes, I need to find the—"

"OMMMMMMM," the monkey interrupted Aang, humming his mantra even louder than before.

Just then, a white light ball drifted by, catching the attention of both the monkey and Aang. "Perhaps that thing would help you; quickly follow it," said the monkey as he pointed at the white sphere of light and saw Aang running after it.

"Finally," said the monkey when he saw that Aang was gone.

AN: Honestly, even though that monkey appeared for like 20 seconds in the entire show, I freaking loved him.

"Hey, please wait up, I just want to ask you something," said Aang as he chased after the white light, agilely jumping from one giant tree root to the next in the vast swamp.

Just when he jumped and caught the light, the root beneath him shrank up and disappeared, causing Aang to fall into the swamp waters below and release the light, "Hey, don't go."

Just when he was about to get up and chase after it again, the water below Aang started to ripple, his reflection distorted, and Roku's reflection appeared instead.

"Hello, Aang."

The fire nation, aided by their superior numbers and technology, had already invaded deep inside the northern water tribe. At this point, all hope seemed to be lost; the northern water tribe was about to fall.

Arnook stood on the highest point as he watched the fight going on, his expression one of helplessness. Even though Levi was still incapacitated, he didn't know what to do.

The fire nation formation was shaped in a spear-like pattern heading straight towards the palace with Zhao and four other firebenders by his side in the front. A map was in his hand as he kept looking at it and then looking up and surveying the place. Soon, a smile stretched on his face as he signaled his men and headed in one specific direction.

"Roku! The water tribe is under attack. I need to find the moon and ocean spirits," said Aang as he looked at the reflection of Avatar Roku in the water.

The reflection rippled for a second before the waters rose and formed Avatar Roku in front of Aang, "The moon and the ocean are ancient spirits; they crossed over from the spirit world to the physical world near the beginning. There was only one spirit I know of old enough to remember."

"Was?" asked Aang, confused by the past tense.

"Yes, he was slain by your friend Levi," said Roku, making Aang frown.

"Fear not, Aang, the spirit I am speaking of is one of the vilest and evil there is; his death is a blessing to all in the spirit and physical world," said Roku, afraid that Aang might have misunderstood something about Koh.

"That is good to hear," said Aang, visibly relaxed, but what am I supposed to do now?" he asked with a hint of panic in his voice.

"There are other ways, Aang, there always are, but sadly, we don't have enough time," said Roku with a regretful sigh.

"I think I can help with that," said a voice from the side, making both Roku and Aang flinch as they turned toward it.

Suspended in the air to their sides was a seven-colored parrot, he was in the air with his wings folded by his sides as if he was standing on some invisible tree branch.

"Who are you?" asked Roku with a weary tone in his voice.

"You may call me Sage, and that is all you need to know," said Sage in a deep, enigmatic voice.

"Sage? I've never heard of you," said Roku with frowning brows.

"Of course you didn't, you've only been in the spirit world for the past hundred years, and I tend to keep a low profile," said Sage, "Although I am sure most of the Avians in the spirit world have heard of me," finished Sage with a hint of pride in his tone.

Roku and Aang were confused hearing the last part, but Aang had no time to waste as he quickly asked, "You said you could help us, how?"

"Well, I can't believe I have to state the obvious here, but the moon and ocean spirits were the ones you meditated right next to in the spirit oasis," said Sage immediately. He always hated it when people sounded cryptic and mysterious; it was only okay when he did it.

Just when he thought his mission here was done and he was about to turn around and leave, "You mean Yue and Katara!" Aang's exclamation almost made him pop a vessel; he had to hold the urge not to slap him across the face and maintain his mysterious and powerful front.

"Ha-ah, no, it's the fuc…the Two fish swimming around each other in the pond," said Sage, stopping mid-sentence to not say things that might corrupt the young Avatar's mind, although Roku seemed to understand what he was about to say.

Aang's expression lit up as a look of realization dawned on him, "THE KOI FISH."

"Yes, yes, the KOI fish now get going, he would lead the way," said Sage as he pointed to a Yellow parrot that had appeared on top of a branch on the side without them noticing.

Without another word, Aang followed the yellow parrot. Roku wanted to stop him, but he didn't. He had a feeling they weren't enemies.

"So you wouldn't mind a small chat, would you?" asked Roku, hoping to dig some information from this mysterious spirit.

"Why do you have a cure for erectile dysfunction?" asked Sage as he looked at Roku.

The previous Avatar was lost for words; he might have even thought he was joking if not for the hopeful look on his face.

"I…No, sadly I don't..." Before Roku could finish speaking, Sage teleported out of there, leaving a stumped Roku.

AN: Just noticed that birds might not have the same reproductive organs as humans, and theirs might not work the same, but this is one of the perks of having an original character, you can shape him however you want, so Sage's thing works like humans.

In the spirit of Oasis

Levi hid in a space pocket he had created as he watched the scene before him. Katara and Yue sat on the side as Aang, with his tattoos and eyes glowing, sat meditating beside the pond. The Moon and Ocean spirits were circling each other in perfect harmony in the pond.

'Sage should be done by now, and Zhao isn't too far off,' thought Levi, remembering his visit to Sage previously and detecting Zhao coming with his Ethereal sense.

He had asked Sage to help Aang in place of Koh as he was….Unavailable…, and to his surprise, the parrot had immediately agreed, which made things all the more easier for Levi. He would have released Koh back in his cave to have a talk with Aang, but he was sure most of the spirits around knew that it was dead and would question why he was back.

Levi looked to the entrance of the spirit oasis. From there, Zhao, alongside his fire benders, came in as if he owned the place.

Katara was the first one to notice him as her face turned pale in horror, and she sat up, ready to defend Aang. Yue only noticed him thanks to Katara taking a fighting stance as she retreated and hid to the side with a fearful look on her face.

The sigh that unfolded next before Levi was so majestic that Levi couldn't help but feel proud. He even had to resist the urge to start clapping and cheering Katara on as she single-handedly took on five fire benders. Sadly, she was still outnumbered in the end, and it wasn't nighttime, so she didn't receive any boost.

A ball of fire sent her flying, throwing her far from Aang and the pond. Levi decreased the damage of the fireball using precise space manipulation and firebending, leaving only the force that pushed her back, even if it still wouldn't have done that much harm. Levi wasn't willing to sit around and watch his little sister get harmed.

'This is it,' thought Levi, his eyes shining as Zhao strode towards the pond, completely ignoring Aang, who was meditating by the side. Bringing up a cloth sack, he scooped up the white Koi fish from the pond and held it in front of him with a triumphant look on his face, his expression turning maniacal.

The moment the White Koi fish, the spirit of the moon, was out of the pond and separated from the spirit of the Ocean, the sky turned red, casting the world into a deep red hue. All around the battlefield, water benders started losing their bending, water refused to obey them any longer, and they couldn't even feel their connection to it.

Even the firebenders stopped attacking for a second due to the unnatural phenomenon.

The firebenders seemed to finally get the breakthrough they were waiting for as they started pushing even more aggressively, the last lines of resistance breaking in the face of the fire nation as the casualties piled up on top of each other.

The northern water tribe, always so proud of its abundance of benders and capable warriors, felt so helpless at this moment, like a child trying to face a ferocious tiger; they stood no chance.

"ZHAO, stay your hand," shouted Aang, who had just woken up at Zhao, holding his staff. Katara was on his left, and Sokka, who had arrived at some time, was on his right.

"Avatar," Said Zhao, smiling as he saw Aang, "You finally decided to join us on this glorious event, on the day I would kill the moon spirit, hahaha."

"My name would go down in history, I would be known as the one who took down the water benders in the entire world, my name would be mentioned beside the fire lord," said Zhao, his tone becoming more frantic the more he spoke.

"Zhao, please you can't do this, killing the moon spirit won't just hurt the water tribe, it would hurt everyone, including the fire nation, without the moon everything would fall out of balance, you have no idea the kind of chaos you're going to unleash on the world," said Aang in a pleading tone, putting his weapon down to emphasize his point to Zhao.

"Listen to the kid, Zhao, put the spirit down." Iroh's voice came from the side, his tone anything but friendly.

Looking at Iroh, who had just arrived, even Levi was surprised; he had never seen the kind old man this angry.

"General Iroh, why am I not surprised by your betrayal?"

"I am no traitor, Zhao. The fire nation needs the moon, too. Whatever you do to that spirit, Zhao, I will unleash a hundred-fold upon you," said Iroh, his gaze sharp; everyone around could see that he meant what he was saying.

This wasn't the kind old man who made tea and sang songs who was speaking; this was the dragon of the west and a general of the fire nation who put fear into the hearts of countless people before.
