They had magic items that they had brought with them that created a layer of ice around them that kept out the heat. However, it just wasn't the same as the ice needles that Zwein had used previously.
The ice needles had created a perfect barrier where they hadn't felt the heat at all.
But this ice barrier that they created on their own just wasn't strong enough to keep out all of the heat.
The only thing that they could do was push through with their determination.
