Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Clash of Shadows

Stepping out from the subterranean vault into the shattered industrial sector of future Tokyo, Alex, Vincenzo, and the adult Hayato kept their stances low, navigating through the overgrown, hollowed-out concrete ruins. The skies above were stained a dark, unnatural violet—a lingering side effect of the Vespera Familia's high-density energy shields that shrouded the city.

Hayato led the way, his hand resting near his dual sidearms. "Keep your guard up," he warned in a low, disciplined voice. "The Vespera network maintains automated patrols and mercenary squads throughout this sector. They monitor every thermal spike in the area."

Before they could reach the primary transport tunnel, a sudden, unnatural drop in temperature chilled the air. Out of the surrounding alleyways and burnt-out storefronts, a dozen operatives stepped into the open. Clad in sleek, tactical body armor bearing the sharp, stylized crescent crest of the Vespera Familia, they moved with military precision, raising high-caliber energy rifles.

The squad leader—a broad-shouldered officer with cold, calculating eyes—stepped forward, a cruel smirk tugging at his scarred lips.

"Well, well. What do we have here?" the commander sneered, his voice amplified through his helmet's comms. "Stray rats crawling out from the Luciano ruins? You've stumbled right into Vespera territory. Kill the old man and the adult—capture the boy."

Adult Hayato didn't hesitate. In a single fluid motion, he stepped in front of Alex, his red Storm flame bursting forth in a violent, crackling aura that enveloped his gloved hands and weapons. "We don't take orders from Vespera trash," Hayato declared, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Alex, Vincenzo—stay close and watch their flank!"

The battle erupted instantly.

The Vespera squad opened fire, a barrage of high-velocity energy rounds tearing through the asphalt. Moving with breathtaking speed, adult Hayato leaped into the center of the line. His ten years of combat experience showed in every movement—he ducked beneath incoming fire, parried heavy rifle barrels with his unarmored forearms, and delivered explosive, Storm-infused palm strikes that shattered tactical armor and sent guards crashing through concrete walls.

Vincenzo moved with practiced agility, using the debris as cover to slip behind the enemy's advance guard, disabling two riflemen with precise, disabling strikes to their joint seals.

At the center, Alex channeled his Sky flame. The golden aura flared brightly across his gloves as he closed the distance on a pair of advancing enforcers. Slicing beneath a heavy blade strike, Alex landed a decisive, flame-boosted strike to the commander's chest plate, the explosive impact driving the officer back several yards across the cracked pavement.

"Unbelievable..." the Vespera commander growled, coughing up blood as he pushed himself up from the rubble, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at Alex's flame. "That aura... that's the 10th Boss's Sky flame. But he died ten years ago!"

"The Luciano line doesn't die so easily," adult Hayato said coldly, stepping between the commander and Alex.

Desperate, the commander drew a sidearm infused with dense, dark Vespera energy, lunging forward in a final, reckless attack. But Hayato's movement was a mere blur. Pivoting on his heel, the adult Storm Guardian caught the commander's wrist, redirected the blade, and delivered a devastating, point-blank Storm discharge straight through the officer's core armor.

The commander collapsed onto the stone, his weapon slipping from his fingers as the remaining Vespera mercenaries fled into the dark alleys.

"You may have... beaten this patrol," the commander gasped, his sight fading as he glared up at them. "But the Vespera leaders... already control this era. You're fighting a ghost..."

"Then we'll banish it," Hayato replied, stepping over the fallen officer as his Storm flame settled back into his ring.

Silence returned to the ruined street. Alex lowered his hands, breathing heavily as he looked around at the fallen Vespera squad. The sheer efficiency and power of his future guardian had saved them, but the encounter proved just how dangerous this dark timeline really was.

"That was just a forward scouting unit," adult Hayato said, turning back to Alex and offering a brief, approving nod. "You held your own well, Alex. But the main Vespera fortress is heavily fortified. We need to reach the hidden Luciano headquarters and rally whoever remains."

Nodding with renewed resolve, Alex and Vincenzo fell into formation behind adult Hayato, stepping deeper into the shadows of the future as they made their way toward the secret base.
