Chapter 14 - chapter 14 : training for the battle of the rings part 5

Tucked deep within a dense, pine-forested valley on the outskirts of Tokyo, the secluded traditional dojo stood in near-total silence, save for the rush of a nearby waterfall.

Giovanni stepped along the stone path, adjusting his coat against the cool mountain air. While the other guardians trained in high-energy rings and bustling dojos, his discipline required a completely different kind of environment.

Pushing back the heavy wooden sliding doors, he stepped into the cavernous, quiet hall. Standing at the far end was Justin Sech—the current Mist Guardian of the Luciano family. Broad-shouldered, with short blonde hair and a razor-sharp, unblinking gaze, Justin exuded a quiet, deceptive presence that belied his massive frame.

"You're late by two minutes, Giovanni," Justin said, his voice echoing off the exposed cedar beams. "I am Justin Sech. If you intend to take my place in the next generation, leave your parlor tricks at the door. Let's begin."

Giovanni bowed his head slightly, a playful smirk tugging at his lips despite the stern welcome. "Lead the way, master."

Justin walked to the center of the polished floor, where the ambient light seemed to bend subtly around his figure. "The role of the Mist Guardian is not merely to fight, but to construct reality where none exists. We deceive, we disorient, and we shatter the enemy's spatial awareness before they can even draw a weapon. To do that, your focus must be absolute."

Justin raised two fingers, and without a sound, the sunlight filtering through the windows began to warp. A thick, ethereal fog rolled inward from the corners of the room, swallowing Justin's form until only a phantom outline remained.

"This is the Mist Shroud," Justin's voice echoed, sounding as if it came from every direction at once. "It obscures sight, dampens sound, and severs an attacker's sense of direction. Now—dispel mine and construct your own."

Giovanni closed his eyes, taking a slow breath to center his thoughts. At first, channeling his energy felt clunky; the fog he projected was thin, fragile, and dissipated almost instantly under the weight of Justin's pressure.

"You're trying to force it with raw energy," Justin scolded from somewhere within the mist, his hand suddenly clapping down on Giovanni's shoulder from behind—even though his voice had come from the front. "Illusions are born from belief, not muscle. Make the air itself believe the fog is real."

Giovanni recalibrated, relaxing his mind and letting his energy flow outwards naturally. Slowly, the air around him grew heavy and cool, coalescing into a dense, swirling veil that completely hid his presence from view.

"Better," Justin noted, stepping out from the haze with a subtle nod. "That is your foundation."

Over the days that followed, the mountain dojo became a battleground of perception. Justin drove Giovanni through advanced techniques—teaching him the precise visual projections of the Mist Decoy to draw enemy fire, and the complex, multi-layered phantom constructs of the Mist Clone. Day after day, Giovanni pushed his mental stamina to its absolute limit, learning to construct convincing phantom targets while maintaining his own physical defense.

By the eve of the assault on the Diablero compound, Giovanni stood in the center of the dojo, completely indistinguishable from three identical phantom copies surrounding him.

Justin watched the display, a rare, faint smile breaking his stern features. "Your mind is sharp, Giovanni. When the siege begins, use that fog to blind our enemies—and bring our family home safe."

Giovanni dissolved the illusions with a flick of his wrist, offering a respectful bow. As he walked out into the mountain dusk, the quiet anxiety about the upcoming battle was replaced by a sharp, calculating confidence. The Diablero family was expecting a straightforward fight, but in the mist, nothing was ever as it seemed.
