The midnight air of Alabasta was cool and quiet, a sharp contrast to the roaring fires of the war that had consumed the capital just days prior.
Under the cover of darkness, the Straw Hat Pirates slipped out of the Royal Palace. They moved like shadows across the sandstone rooftops of Alubarna, their injuries heavily bandaged, their expressions a mix of grim determination and quiet sorrow.
They were leaving Vivi behind.
It was the hardest decision they had made since entering the Grand Line. But Princess Vivi was the heart of Alabasta. Her people needed her to rebuild the broken nation. If she was caught sailing with wanted pirates, she would be branded a criminal by the World Government.
"We'll wait for her at the eastern port until exactly noon tomorrow," Luffy said quietly as they dropped down into the desert outskirts. "If she doesn't show up, we sail without her."
The trek to the hidden inlet where they had left the Going Merry was grueling. The Marines were actively patrolling the dunes, their searchlights cutting through the darkness.
By the time the sun began to rise over the eastern horizon, the crew finally spotted the familiar sheep figurehead of their beloved ship bobbing in the coastal waters. But they weren't the only ones there.
"Look!" Chopper gasped, pointing a furry hoof toward the docks.
Moored right next to the Going Merry was a flamboyant, bright pink ship shaped like a giant swan. Standing on the deck, striking a dramatic ballet pose, was none other than Mr. 2 Bon Clay.
"The swan guy!" Zoro growled, his hands instantly dropping to his swords. "Didn't I slice you up in the city?"
"Wait! I come in peace!" Bon Clay wept, leaping off the swan ship and performing a flawless, spinning pirouette onto the sandy shore. "I am no longer an agent of Baroque Works! Mr. 0 is defeated, and the company is ruined! But more importantly... we are friends!"
Sanji raised an eyebrow, lighting a fresh cigarette. "Friends? You tried to assassinate us."
"And you saved me from drowning in the freezing ocean before that!" Bon Clay countered, dramatically wiping away a tear. "In the name of Okama Way, a debt of friendship must be repaid! And you are going to need my help, Straw Hats. Look at the horizon!"
Nami pulled out her spyglass and gasped. The color completely drained from her face.
Forming an impenetrable wall across the sparkling blue water was a massive fleet of heavily armed Marine battleships. The sails bore the emblem of the World Government. Standing on the bow of the flagship was a tall, imposing woman in a sharp crimson suit, smoking a cigarette.
"Captain Hina," Nami whispered in terror. "The 'Black Cage'. She's one of Marine Headquarters' elite tacticians. They've completely blockaded the port. We can't sail through that!"
"That is exactly why I am here!" Bon Clay declared, striking his chest proudly. "My crew and I will act as a decoy! I will use my Clone-Clone Fruit to mimic Straw Hat Luffy. We will sail my ship straight into their trap and draw their fire! It will give you the perfect opening to slip past the blockade and reach your princess!"
Luffy's eyes widened. He looked at the flamboyant former assassin, profoundly moved. "Swan guy... you're gonna risk your life for us?"
"One may stray from the path of a man, and one may stray from the path of a woman..." Bon Clay smiled, tears streaming down his heavily makeup-covered face. "But there is no straying from the path of a human! Let the flowers of friendship bloom, even in hell! Farewell, my friends!"
Within minutes, the swan ship tore out of the inlet, cannons blazing, drawing the immediate, furious attention of Captain Hina and the entire Marine fleet.
"All ships, intercept the Straw Hat Pirates!" Hina ordered, falling perfectly for the disguise. "Hina is annoyed. Sink them!"
"He's doing it! He's clearing a path!" Usopp cheered as the Going Merry's sails caught the wind, slipping out of the inlet behind the chaos.
But Hina wasn't a fool. As the massive fleet converged on the decoy swan ship, two sleek, heavily armed Marine pursuit vessels noticed the Going Merry trying to slip away along the coastline.
"Sir! A second pirate vessel is breaking the perimeter!" a Marine shouted from the pursuit ship.
"Fire at will! Don't let them reach the open sea!"
BOOM! BOOM!
Cannonballs roared through the air, splashing violently into the water mere inches from the Going Merry's hull. The ship rocked violently, throwing Nami and Chopper to the deck.
"They're too close!" Sanji yelled, sprinting toward the stern. "We don't have the wind to outrun them!"
"Leave this to me," Kai stepped up, walking steadily to the rear railing of the Merry.
"Elemental Power: Earth!" Kai roared.
A rich, heavy amber light erupted from the watch. His cloak dissolved into geometric particles, instantly replaced by his Earth form. He was now clad in a rugged brown jacket worn open over a crisp white undershirt, paired with dark grey trousers. On his feet were massive, heavy-duty grey and white boots fastened with thick straps.
But Kai wasn't finished.Within a fraction of a second, the rocks and compressed earth locked together, forming a massive pair of Earth Gloves. The heavy, earth-made gauntlets encased both of his forearms and fists, completely solidifying. The gloves were incredibly dense, forged to dramatically enhance his abilities and strengthen his physical attacks.
As the volley of Marine cannonballs rained down toward the ship's stern, Kai pulled his heavy, rock-armored right fist back.
"Earth Smash!"
Kai threw a devastating punch into the incoming cannonballs mid-air. The enhanced strength of the Earth Gloves unleashed a colossal, pressurized shockwave of kinetic energy.
CRASH!
The explosives detonated violently, entirely unable to pierce the heavy blast of earth-enhanced force. The sheer kinetic backlash of his punch blasted the smoke away and created a massive gust of wind that slammed into the Merry's sails, giving the ship the extra burst of speed it needed to break free of the firing range.
Kai stood on the deck, letting out a steady breath as the massive Earth Gloves slowly crumbled back into glowing geometric particles that drifted away in the sea breeze.
Bzzzt!
"Nice strike, Kai!" Bot buzzed cheerfully from the watch speaker.
Luffy, Zoro, and Usopp ran to the back of the ship, watching the smoke clear as the Marine ships fell further and further behind.
"Awesome, Kai!" Luffy cheered, his eyes sparkling. "You completely smashed them away!"
Zoro raised an eyebrow, offering a rare nod of approval. "Good defense."
Kai looked down at his watch, a tired but triumphant smile crossing his face. The ambient energy of the earth had responded flawlessly to his command, granting him exactly the physical enhancement he needed. "Thanks. Now let's get out of here."
The Going Merry rode the momentum, soaring out of the Marine perimeter and sailing smoothly toward the eastern rendezvous point.
...
Miles away, on the deck of a Marine battleship, a communications officer stood at a terminal, frantically speaking into a heavily encrypted Den Den Mushi.
"Marine Headquarters, this is Alabasta Blockade Command," the officer reported, sweat dripping down his brow. "Sir Crocodile has been apprehended. However... the Straw Hat Pirates have breached the perimeter."
"Explain," a stern, authoritative voice echoed from the receiver. "How did a rookie crew slip past Captain Hina's fleet?"
"They utilized a decoy, sir. But there is a new variable we need to report," the officer said, pulling up a crude sketch taken by a scout during the escape. "There is an unknown combatant traveling with Straw Hat Luffy. A teenager, mid-teens. Wears shifting tactical gear and was just seen summoning massive, earth-made gloves to enhance his physical strength and repel cannon fire."
"A new crew member? What is his Devil Fruit ability?"
"That's the anomaly, sir," the officer swallowed hard. "Our scouts report he does not possess a Devil Fruit. He was seen swimming perfectly fine near Nanohana a few days ago. Furthermore, his elemental powers trigger alongside physical changes to his clothing. But but it's not a lugia devil fruit, he can change multiple elemental."
"If not a Devil Fruit, then what?" the voice from Headquarters demanded.
"According to close-range intelligence, the boy's power is tied to an advanced piece of unknown technology," the officer read from his notes. "It appears to be a glowing watch strapped to his right wrist. Multiple witnesses report that the device is self-aware. The watch actually speaks to him, and he uses it to command the elements."
The Den Den Mushi fell completely silent for a long moment.
"A talking watch that bypasses the curse of the sea and commands the elements," Headquarters finally replied, the voice laced with dangerous curiosity. "Flag this unknown pirate immediately. We need a bounty poster drafted. Find out who he is, and where he got that technology."
.....
The midday sun beat down on the sparkling blue waters of the eastern coast.
The Straw Hat Pirates stood silently on the deck of the Merry, looking toward the shore. There, standing on the edge of the desert sands alongside her giant riding duck, Karoo, was Princess Vivi.
She wasn't wearing her desert cloak. She was dressed in beautiful, royal garments. The symbol of the Alabasta Kingdom.
She held a large Den Den Mushi loudspeaker, broadcasting her voice across the water so the crew could hear her. Behind her, out of sight but definitely within range, Marine patrol ships were watching the coastline like hawks.
"I cannot go with you!" Vivi cried out, tears streaming freely down her face. Her voice echoed across the gentle waves. "Thank you for everything! I... I want to adventure more! But I love my country! Therefore, I cannot go!"
Luffy stood at the railing, his straw hat shadowing his eyes. The rest of the crew stood perfectly still.
"I will remain here!" Vivi yelled, her voice breaking with overwhelming emotion. "But... if we ever meet again someday... will you still call me your crewmate?!"
Luffy opened his mouth, ready to scream a joyful "YES!" at the top of his lungs.
But Nami quickly slapped a hand over his mouth. "Don't, Luffy! The Marines are watching her! If we answer her, if they have proof she's affiliated with pirates, she'll become a wanted criminal. She'll lose her kingdom."
Luffy gritted his teeth. He understood. They couldn't say a single word. To protect her, they had to turn their backs.
Vivi stood on the shore, the silence from the ship breaking her heart. She thought they were leaving her behind forever. She thought the silence was their goodbye.
Then, Zoro turned his back to the shore. He slowly raised his left arm high into the air.
Sanji followed, raising his left arm. Nami, Usopp, and Chopper did the same.
Luffy grinned fiercely, turning his back to the princess and thrusting his left arm toward the bright blue sky.
Kai smiled softly. He turned around, raising his left arm right alongside his captain's. The white bandage had been completely removed.
There, painted boldly in thick, black ink on every single one of their left arms, was the 'X' mark.
It was the symbol of their fellowship. The undeniable proof that no matter the distance, no matter the time, and no matter what the World Government said, they were forever bound together.
Vivi gasped. The tears flowed faster, but a brilliant, beautiful smile broke across her face. She and Karoo turned their backs to the sea, proudly raising their left wings and arms high into the air, displaying their own black 'X' marks to the sky.
They didn't need to speak a single word. The silent promise echoed louder than any cannon fire.
The Going Merry caught the wind, leaving the desert kingdom of Alabasta behind. The crew stood together on the deck, their arms raised high, sailing forward into the vast, unknown depths of the Grand Line.
