What they did to achieve that could be argued about whether it was right or wrong, but what had been done was already done.
They stuck to the ways of their ancestors as they clung to that power and influence to the present day.
The intentions of their ancestors may have been pure or motivated by something darker, but that did not matter too much in the present.
What truly mattered was how the five great families made use of the power they had inherited.
A lot of what they were doing in the present had been necessary to maintain the balance and stability of what was within their grasp.
That could benefit the Balancers, Watchers and even so many ordinary people with no connections to the supernatural world.
The problem was that it was built upon so many sacrifices that had to be made to maintain it all.
Perhaps many of those sacrifices did not even need to be made.
