Everyone had a different understanding of life, survival and other things as they experienced life differently than others.
Each person would judge how they would survive themselves in the circumstances they were placed into.
Others would have other priorities on what should be preserved during such times, as there would be people who would choose to preserve others or something else over themselves.
Whether such a sacrifice would be worth it would not be known until everything was over.
The only way to know for certain would be to experience the end for oneself, which meant that they would have to live on and find a way to survive despite the odds that were against them.
Whether or not Ash had made the right or wrong decision would not be something that could be judged right away, as it would be more likely that it would not be until everything was over that such a thing could be judged.
