Chapter 42 - Chapter 41: The Sparks of the Anvil

The air in the topmost chamber of Nagoya Castle's main keep was crisp, cleared by the high altitude and the gentle night breeze blowing from the Ise Bay.

Unlike the suffocating formality of the Great Audience Hall below, this private sanctuary was surprisingly spartan.

There were no golden screens or layered silk banners.

Instead, three large iron matchlock barrels rested against a rack, surrounded by stacks of raw timber blueprints and a heavy bronze brazier glowing with charcoal embers.

Oda Nobunaga sat directly on the bare wooden floorboards, a short knife in hand, peeling a piece of dried persimmon.

To his right, Lady Kichō reclined slightly against a low desk, her fan resting on her chin, her enigmatic gaze fixed on the doorway.

As Subaru Ryu led Kinoshita Tokichirō and Maeda Keijirō across the threshold, the physical pressure in the room shifted instantly.

The system interface across Subaru's vision flared into a vivid, contrasting web of crimson and purple light.

[TACTICAL COMBAT/INTELLIGENCE SYNC: THE UPPER SANCTUM]

ODA NOBUNAGA : LEAD: 99 / ATK: 92 / INT: 92

MAEDA KEIJIRO : LEAD: 81 / ATK: 98 [Peerless Might]

KINOSHITA TOKICHIRŌ : INT: 95 / POL: 94 [Latent Genius]

STATIC ATMOSPHERE : TENSE / HIGHLY VOLATILE

Keijirō did not bow.

He stood tall, his head nearly brushing the ceiling beams, his hand resting casually on the hilt of his oversized sword.

Tokichirō, conversely, collapsed onto his knees the second his feet cleared the doorway, dropping his nose flat against the wood.

"My Lord!

The lowest of your servants, Tokichirō, enters your august presence!" the future Hideyoshi cried out, his voice trembling but clear.

Nobunaga didn't look up from his fruit.

He popped a piece of the dried persimmon into his mouth, chewed slowly, and then pointed the tip of his knife directly at Tokichirō.

"You're late, Monkey," Nobunaga said, his voice flat.

"The timber logs from Gakuden have already arrived at the northern bank.

If they sit in the water for another twelve hours, the wood softens and the rot sets in.

Why are you here instead of counting my logs?"

Tokichirō did not lift his head, but his fingers gripped the edge of the tatami floorboards.

His 95 INT was working at a furious pace, analyzing Nobunaga's tone.

"The logs are already out of the water, My Lord!" Tokichirō answered rapidly.

"I did not wait for the sun to set.

Before I came to this annex, I instructed the local river-man guild to haul the timber onto the gravel flats using dry straw rollers.

I promised them three additional copper coins per man from the Tsushima market surplus—the very surplus Lord Subaru calculated last week.

The wood is dry, protected by oil-cloths, and ready for the carpenters at dawn!"

Nobunaga stopped moving his knife.

He slowly lowered his hands, his piercing eyes locking onto the small, trembling peasant.

The silence stretched for five excruciating seconds.

Then, a low, guttural chuckle rumbled from Nobunaga's chest.

He reached over to a lacquered tray beside him, picked up an old, salt-stained straw sandal, and tossed it directly at Tokichirō's head.

It struck him square in the ear with a soft thud.

"You arrogant little beast," Nobunaga muttered, though his lips were curled into a sharp grin.

"You spend my coin before the treasury even opens.

You bypass the village headmen, you bribe the river-men, and you tell my generals how to store wood."

Tokichirō finally raised his face, his expression a mixture of terror and fierce, desperate ambition.

He caught the fallen sandal with both hands, pressing it against his chest like a priceless relic.

"A lord who builds a new world cannot wait for old men to write permissions, My Lord!

If I wait for the Hayashi faction to audit the copper, the timber rots.

I would rather lose my head for stealing your coins to build your walls, than keep my head while your fortress crumbles!"

Kichō let out a soft, delighted laugh behind her fan.

"He speaks like a thief who knows he is too useful to hang, Husband."

Nobunaga leaned forward, his 99 LEAD flaring with an overwhelming, suffocating gravity that pinned Tokichirō to the spot.

"Listen well, Tokichirō.

I don't care about the copper coins.

But if a single one of those logs splits during the autumn frost, I will have your bones ground into mortar to seal the gaps.

Do we understand each other?"

"By the sun and the moon, I will deliver a wall that can withstand a god's hammer!" Tokichirō roared, his loyalty index flashing red as it broke through its previous limits.

[SYSTEM LOYALTY RESOLUTION: SUBJECT TOKICHIRŌ]

CURRENT STATE : ABSOLUTE / UNBREAKABLE BOUND (96%)

BUFF TRIGGERED : [The Monkey's Resolve] -> Civil works speed increased by 15%

"A touching performance," a booming voice interrupted.

Maeda Keijirō stepped forward, his heavy leather boots thudding loudly against the pristine floorboards.

He looked down at Nobunaga, his arms crossed over his massive chest, completely unawed by the political aura in the room.

"The monkey knows how to bark for his supper.

But I am a samurai, Lord Nobunaga.

I don't care about timber logs, and I don't care about copper coins from Tsushima.

I want to know if you are a master worth bleeding for, or if you're just a clever boy hiding behind an outlander's arithmetic."

Subaru Ryu stepped up slightly, his hand moving toward his fan, but Nobunaga held up a single finger, silencing his advisor.

Nobunaga stood up.

He was shorter than Keiji by half a foot, but as he rose, the sheer, unadulterated weight of his presence filled the empty space between them until the giant warrior's smile began to falter.

"You think you're a wild animal, Keiji," Nobunaga said softly, walking directly up to the giant until their chests were inches apart.

The tip of Nobunaga's dagger caught the red glow of the charcoal brazier.

"Your uncle Toshiie tells me you refuse to bow because your spirit is too vast for an estate.

You ride your piebald horse through the markets, you break the swords of my guards, and you think you are free."

Nobunaga suddenly grabbed the collar of Keiji's flamboyant haori jacket, his grip twisting the silk with terrifying strength.

"But you are not free, Keiji.

You are a coward," Nobunaga whispered, his eyes burning with a dark, demonic light.

"You hide your strength in the mud of local taverns because you are afraid to find out what happens when a man truly stakes his life on something greater than his own ego.

You play the fool because if you tried to be a hero, you might fail."

Keiji's eyes narrowed into twin points of lethal, feral rage.

His hand twitched toward the hilt of his massive sword—a 98 ATK reflex that could cleave a man in two before he could blink.

Subaru's system screen flashed a massive red warning banner:

[CRITICAL ALERT: EXTREME VIOLENCE PROBABILITY 87%]

SUBJECT KEIJIRO LETHAL INTENT DETERMINED

INTERVENTION REQUIRED?

Subaru stood his ground, choosing to trust Nobunaga's absolute leadership.

Nobunaga didn't flinch.

He leaned in closer, his voice cutting through the tension like a razor.

"Draw it, if your spirit is that small.

Cut me down and run back to the mountains like a wild dog.

Or... leave that blade in its scabbard, ride into the teeth of thirty thousand Imagawa spears under my banner, and show the heavens how loud a true tiger can roar.

I am not asking you to be my servant, Keiji.

I am giving you a stage big enough for your madness!"

Keiji stared into Nobunaga's unblinking eyes.

For three long seconds, the room hovered on the edge of a bloody execution.

Then, slowly, the tension drained from the giant's massive frame.

He let out a long, ragged breath, and his hand dropped away from his sword hilt.

A slow, massive grin spread across Keiji's face—not the mocking smirk of a tavern rogue, but the ecstatic, terrifying smile of a warrior who had finally found his match.

He dropped heavily onto one knee, slamming his fist against his chest.

"You are completely insane, Lord Nobunaga," Keiji laughed, his voice shaking the rafters.

"A demon who wants to burn the sky.

Very well!

My spear has been bored to death by sane men.

Let's see what kind of hell we can raise together!"

[SYSTEM RE-ALIGNMENT METRICS: SUBJECT KEIJIRO]

PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE : CONQUERED BY AURA

LOYALTY INDEX : ROCKETED TO 89% (Stable Alignment)

UNIQUE TRAIT SYNC : [Wild Beast Awakened] -> Vanguard pressure increased by 25% when fighting outnumbered.

Subaru Ryu stepped forward into the center of the room, his blue system interface humming softly as it recorded the final data streams of the encounter.

The three disparate forces—the demon lord, the pragmatic peasant genius, and the peerless wild card—had been fused into a singular operational unit.

[CLAN ADVANCEMENT STATUS: NAGOYA HIGH CORE]

CIVIL DEVELOPMENT CAPTAIN : KINOSHITA TOKICHIRŌ (INT: 95)

SHOCK ATTACK CHAMPION : MAEDA KEIJIRO (ATK: 98)

CORE GEOPOLITICAL STATE : INTERNAL STABILITY REDEFINED (+40%)

Kichō stepped down from her desk, her silk robes rustling as she stood beside Nobunaga.

She looked at Subaru, a look of profound satisfaction passing between them.

"The gears are locked, Advisor.

The monkey has his wood, and the tiger has his field."

Nobunaga turned back to the map table, his face hardening into that familiar, unshakeable imperial clarity.

He picked up two heavy iron markers, placing them firmly on the Owari border.

"Go, both of you," Nobunaga commanded, his voice resonant with absolute authority.

"The summer is ending, and the autumn winds will bring the smell of blood from the east.

Build my walls, sharpen your spears, and prepare your horses.

When the time comes, we will not just defend Owari...

we will redefine the boundaries of this entire land."

Tokichirō and Keiji bowed in perfect unison—one low and calculated, the other deep and respectful.

As they exited the chamber with Subaru, the night sky outside seemed to crack with a sudden flash of silent summer lightning, illuminating the vast, waiting land below.

The tools had been gathered, the forge was hot, and the reshaping of Japan had officially begun.
