Chapter 97 - Chapter 96: The Flight of Sloth

Dmitri, the embodiment of Sloth, had never been one to take action. Now, with Tel-Nu's overwhelming presence looming closer, his lethargy had transformed into pure panic. His once laid-back demeanor had vanished, replaced by frantic, desperate thoughts as he tried to run. He didn't want to fight—he couldn't fight. Running was all he could think of.

His breath came in ragged gasps as he sprinted through the crumbling streets of Corintopia, shadows swirling at the edges of his vision. His heart pounded painfully in his chest, but no matter how fast he tried to move, it was as if the shadows were always there, just behind him, relentless in their pursuit. Dmitri knew it was only a matter of time before they caught up with him.

"Why... why is this happening to me?" he stammered, looking over his shoulder as he rounded a corner. His mind was racing, filled with a mixture of dread and disbelief. He was supposed to be safe. He'd always relied on the others to do the heavy lifting, to bear the brunt of the work. That's how it had always been. He'd let them wear themselves down, and he'd pick up whatever was left. But now... now they were all gone.

The shadows flickered in front of him, moving faster than he could comprehend. In one instant, they surged from the ground and blocked his path. Dmitri skidded to a stop, eyes wide with terror as the darkness wrapped around him, preventing any further escape. He screamed in frustration, turning to flee in the opposite direction, but the shadows were there too, closing in from all sides.

He stumbled backward, fear gripping his heart as the shadows coiled and writhed like serpents. The walls of Corintopia seemed to close in on him, the towering structures offering no refuge from the overwhelming presence of Tel-Nu. His limbs trembled as the ground beneath him shifted, a tendril of shadow coiling around his ankle and pulling him forward. Dmitri tried to resist, but the more he struggled, the closer he was dragged.

"No, no, no!" Dmitri screamed, his voice cracking. He clawed at the ground, his hands scraping across the stone streets as he was pulled inexorably toward his doom. The shadows were everywhere now, moving with an eerie precision, forcing him into a small, enclosed square where no escape was possible.

And then, there he stood. Tel-Nu, the dark harbinger, towering above Dmitri. The shadows swirled around him like a cloak, his very presence radiating power. Dmitri's breath hitched in his throat as he looked up at the being he had spent so long avoiding.

"You thought you could run?" Tel-Nu's voice was cold, emotionless, cutting through the air like a blade. He tilted his head slightly, as though amused by Dmitri's pathetic display. "You thought you could avoid your fate?"

Dmitri's legs gave out from under him, and he collapsed to his knees, trembling uncontrollably. His mind raced, searching for some way out, some excuse he could offer to save himself, but no words came. There was nothing he could say. He had spent his entire existence avoiding responsibility, avoiding action. And now, when it mattered most, he had nowhere left to run.

"At least the others put up a resistance," Tel-Nu continued, his tone mocking. "Feeble as it was, they fought. They stood their ground, faced what was coming to them. But you... you cowered. You ran, thinking you could escape what you deserve."

Dmitri's eyes welled with tears. He had always been able to get away before. Why couldn't he now? Why was this happening? "Please..." he whimpered, his voice barely a whisper. "Please... let me go."

"Let you go?" Tel-Nu's laughter echoed through the square, a sound devoid of warmth. "There is no escape for you, Dmitri. You, who embodied Sloth, who thought you could drift through life without consequence. You've been running from your sins for too long."

The shadows began to swirl more aggressively around Tel-Nu, and Dmitri could feel the weight of them pressing down on him, making it harder to breathe. His chest tightened as he looked up into the eyes of the dark being that had come to pass judgment on him.

"No... no, please!" Dmitri sobbed, his hands outstretched in a desperate plea. "I can't... I can't fight you!"

"You didn't even try," Tel-Nu replied coldly. The shadows moved with purpose, winding their way around Dmitri's arms and legs, lifting him off the ground and suspending him in the air. He hung there, helpless, as the darkness closed in from all sides.

"Fight? You never intended to fight. You only ever cared for yourself, lying in wait while others suffered for your inaction. Now, you'll suffer for your sloth."

The shadows constricted around Dmitri's body, squeezing tighter and tighter, until he could barely draw a breath. His eyes bulged in terror as the darkness enveloped him completely, blocking out the world around him. His final thoughts were of escape, of running, of somehow slipping away like he always had. But there was no more escape. Not this time.

Tel-Nu's voice echoed in his mind as the shadows consumed him. "Rest now, Dmitri. You will never have to lift a finger again."

And with those final words, Dmitri's body went limp, disappearing into the darkness. There was no more running, no more hiding. The embodiment of Sloth had been claimed by the very shadows he had tried to flee from, leaving nothing but silence in his wake.
