Allen dropped onto the couch with a low exhale, eyes closing for a beat.
Shea came back with a tray like she'd planned this all day. Fruits sliced just the way he liked. A tall glass of iced tea. Cheese crackers with an absurdly small sprinkle of paprika. Yeah, she brought them herself not her butler.
"You really did prepare," he said.
"Of course I did." Shea sat beside him, one leg tucked beneath the other, eyes watching him closely. "You're not easy to catch, Allen. When fate hands you over, you don't waste time."
"I'm not a rabbit."
"You run like one."
Zoe grabbed a small pillow and flopped down on the other end of the couch. "Please stop flirting so aggressively in my line of sight. I'm already emotionally unstable."
Shea gave her daughter a serene smile. "You say that, but you keep looking at him like you'd fight me for custody."
"I would," Zoe muttered.
Allen rubbed his temple. "This is already too much."
