Ishida Uryu had learned the arts of the quincy since childhood.
From the time he could hold a bow, his grandfather, Ishida Soken, had been his guide and teacher — patient, precise, and filled with quiet pride for their lineage.
Soken rarely spoke of the deeper past. Whenever Uryu tried to ask about the ancient history of the quincy, the old man would only smile faintly and change the subject. Before he could tell his grandson everything, tragedy struck. Even so, Uryu carried forward what knowledge he had been given.
It was from his grandfather's mouth that he first heard of the quincy purge carried out by the shinigami. Yet to Uryu, those stories felt distant — echoes of a bygone age. He thought them little more than a historical grievance. Perhaps, he reasoned, the shinigami had simply done what was necessary. After all, from what he had seen with his own eyes, the shinigami, though not without their flaws or selfish motives, still fought tirelessly against hollows to preserve balance and peace in the world.
It was that belief that first brought him close to Kurosaki Ichigo and the others.
For his friends, Uryu had crossed the line between worlds more than once. He had invaded the Soul Society to save Kuchiki Rukia, and later braved Hueco Mundo itself to rescue Inoue Orihime. He had even stood on the battlefield against Aizen Sosuke. Though his contribution in that war was small, he had still felt the surge of purpose in fighting alongside them.
When Aizen was finally defeated, Ichigo lost his powers as a shinigami. That loss weighed heavily on Uryu.
Even though Karakura Town was no longer a land of heavy spiritual density and hollows appeared far less often, someone still needed to protect the people. Ichigo could no longer fight. So, Uryu took that duty upon himself, maintaining the fragile peace of Karakura for more than a year.
During that year, he had watched Ichigo's quiet frustration, the pain of a warrior stripped of purpose. When Ichigo finally regained his powers with the help of the Soul Society, Uryu was sincerely happy for him.
Yet, when he learned that Orihime and Sado were receiving training from a mysterious instructor dispatched by the Soul Society, a subtle unease began to take root. His sharp instincts told him that something was coming.
The answer arrived through Rukia herself.
From her, Uryu learned what the Soul Society had kept hidden from the human world. After Aizen's fall, a new power had risen. Hueco Mundo, under its new king, was stronger than ever, stronger even than Aizen had been. Their first clash with the Soul Society had ended in devastating defeat for the latter. Now, the Soul Society was preparing for war once again.
Rukia hadn't said those last words directly, but Uryu didn't need her to. He understood. Helping Ichigo recover his powers, arranging special training for Orihime and Sado—all of it was preparation for the inevitable second war.
It was a war between shinigami and hollow.
And even though he was a quincy, Uryu had always stood beside the shinigami.
His name would never be praised among his kind, as he was well aware of the hatred the quincy held toward Soul Society. But he had long ago made his choice.
Since then, he had trained in isolation, quietly refining his skills.
Even after his father appeared following the Soul Society invasion and taught him advanced quincy techniques, their relationship had remained cold. The image of his father dissecting his mother's corpse when he was a child had carved itself too deeply into his memory to ever fade.
That day, during one of his solitary training sessions, a stranger appeared.
He was tall, sharp-eyed, and carried himself with the calm authority of a king's shadow.
He introduced himself as "Jugram Haschwalth", the Emperor's right hand and the Grandmaster of the Sternritters, the strongest of the quincy order, and the Emperor's direct assistant within Wandenreich, the Invisible Empire.
Uryu had never heard those names before — the Sternritters, the Wandenreich, but what mattered more than words was what followed.
Haschwalth demonstrated his power. The calm way he drew in the reishi of the air, the precision of his Spirit Bow, and the overwhelming force that radiated from his presence left no doubt — he was a quincy.
In that instant, Uryu's world shifted.
Were there truly others?
Were there still quincy alive beyond his family line?
Haschwalth answered those unspoken questions with simple truth.
The Invisible Empire, he said, was the hidden kingdom of the quincy. And Ishida Soken, Uryu's own grandfather, had once been among its ranks as a member of the Sternritters.
Two hundred years ago, when the shinigami purged the quincy, many had survived and fled to that hidden realm, driven by vengeance.
But Haschwalth had not come to speak of that old massacre. His words reached back even further, to the ancient enmity between shinigami and quincy, to the thousand-year war that had begun before history was written.
Then came his true purpose.
The Invisible Empire, he said, would soon march upon the Soul Society once more. His Majesty, the great ancestor of all quincy — Yhwach — had risen. And by his command, Haschwalth had come to bring Ishida Uryu home.
Uryu listened in silence. Then, as the meaning of the words sank in, he clenched his jaw.
He couldn't accept it.
Haschwalth might be a quincy, but that did not make him a saviour. Uryu had chosen his path long ago. He would not be swayed so easily.
Without hesitation, he raised his Spirit Bow, forming arrows of concentrated reishi, and fired at Haschwalth.
Crack!
The arrow shattered in midair. Uryu barely had time to realize it before his world blurred. A single motion, a movement too swift for his eyes to follow, and he found himself disarmed, his bow scattered into fragments of light.
In one blow, Haschwalth had defeated him.
The man didn't mock him. He didn't even seem particularly interested. After delivering his message, he turned away and walked off, his calm voice trailing behind him.
"I'll give you time. Think carefully."
Since that encounter, Uryu had been unable to find peace. His friends noticed it, Ichigo, Orihime, even Sado. He had become distant, distracted, his thoughts always drifting elsewhere.
He wrestled with the question: should he tell them? Should he reveal the existence of the Invisible Empire?
He knew what Ichigo would do.
When Rukia was taken, Ichigo invaded the Soul Society without hesitation. When Orihime was captured, he broke into Hueco Mundo without a second thought. If he learned that the Invisible Empire sought to take Uryu, he would undoubtedly go to war.
But this time, the enemy was beyond anything they had faced before. Haschwalth alone was more terrifying than any Espada. And if his words were true, the Invisible Empire was a power that rivaled even Seireitei itself.
After many sleepless nights, Uryu made his choice.
He filed for leave from school, telling Ichigo and the others only that he had personal matters to attend to. They didn't question it, Uryu had always been solitary, prone to vanishing without explanation. At most, Ichigo frowned, curious, but said nothing.
That evening, Uryu returned to his family home.
The air was still. The room cold.
And there, waiting in the dim light, stood Jugram Haschwalth once more, his expression calm, his gaze unyielding.
Uryu paused at the doorway, his eyes narrowing as the air between them seemed to tighten.
Their fates had already begun to intertwine.
