Chapter 110 - Hot on Their Trail

Percy, Dalia, and Nieren made their way through the dark, damp corridors of the Ironside sewers, the air thick with a musty smell and the echoes of dripping water. The flickering lights from their lanterns cast long shadows on the grimy walls, where signs of decay mingled with the remnants of what once was. The trail of Rya's captors, the notorious Black Roses, had led them into this underground labyrinth, and Nieren felt her unease deepen.

"This is so creepy! Gah! They had to go through the sewers!? Really!?" Nieren exclaimed, her eyes darting around as if expecting something to leap out from the shadows. Every noise seemed amplified in the oppressive silence that enveloped them.

Dalia, with her keen senses as a wolfkin, didn't share Nieren's discomfort. "Yeah, it's common for vermin like the Black Roses to come through the sewers to mask their scent from me," she replied casually, her nose twitching as she inhaled deeply. The unique mix of odors down here was almost overwhelming, but she had picked up a familiar trail—Rya's scent was faint but detectable.

"Gah! I don't know how you wolfkins aren't gagging and throwing up your guts from that foul stench. It's the worst!" Nieren pinched her nose tightly with her fingers, grimacing as a wave of putrid air washed over her. The thought of sludge and sewage was enough to turn her stomach.

"Aw? The poor little Woody can't handle a bit of odor? Hehe." Dalia grinned, her tail wagging happily as she reveled in the sensory overload. "I love it! There are so many fascinating smells down here. Like how one of the Black Roses pissed himself in fear." She chuckled, clearly amused at the thought.

"By the Spirits! This is exactly why I can barely stand being around beastkins! You're so gross!" Nieren said, covering her mouth with her hand, stepping back a little as if trying to distance herself from the pungent atmosphere that Dalia seemed to embrace.

"That's funny... I don't mind being around you, Woody." Dalia shot back with a playful grin. "But you probably should get that checked out by a healer or something? I mean, your reaction to a little smell is quite dramatic!"

"My name isn't Woody! You F-F-Fuzzball!" Nieren protested, frustration bubbling beneath her surface. The insult stung more than she anticipated, igniting a mix of embarrassment and irritation as she eyed Dalia with narrowed eyes.

"Hey, calm down, you two. We need to find Lady Rya," Percy interjected smoothly, trying to mediate the growing tension between the two, his tone both firm and soothing. The weight of their mission loomed above them, reminding them of the importance of their task.

"Alright, alright, let's keep moving. Maybe we can find some clues down here," Dalia conceded, her enthusiasm dimming slightly as she let out an exaggerated sigh. With a determined motion, she resumed her steady pace, navigating through the murky waters of the sewer, the smells of refuse and dampness intertwining in an unpleasant whiff as she followed the elusive scent of the Black Roses.

After a few moments, Dalia paused, her keen senses picking up something new. "Hmm? I can smell fresh air coming from that side tunnel now, and their scent is definitely coming from there." She pointed toward a smaller side tunnel, excitement lighting up her features as her eyes twinkled with the promise of discovery.

"Nice! Let's check it out. Come on!" Percy encouraged, stepping forward with renewed vigor, his heart racing at the thought of a breakthrough in their search.

"Wait! Don't leave me alone!" Nieren cried out, panic shifting her voice into a higher pitch as she hurried after Dalia and Percy, her earlier complaints forgotten in the face of the unknown.

"Don't worry, Woody! It's not too far away," Dalia reassured her, flashing a bright smile over her shoulder, that mischievous twinkle still evident in her eyes.

"Why do you keep calling me 'Woody'?" Nieren asked, exasperation lacing her words as she quickened her pace to keep up with her companions.

"Because you smell like a tree. Duh?" Dalia replied with a shrug, raising her hands in the air as if the logic was as evident as the sun shining above ground. Nieren could only roll her eyes, a reluctant smile threatening to break through despite the circumstances.

"It's not that funny!" Nieren exclaimed, her cheeks puffed out adorably as she pouted, her large, green, expressive eyes narrowing at Dalia.

"Dalia? Can you please stop teasing Nieren?" Percy interjected, his voice a mix of concern and exasperation as he turned to his girlfriend, hoping to diffuse the light-hearted tension between them.

"Okay, Gamma," Dalia replied with a teasing grin that revealed her playful nature. "I'll try, but I can't promise to hold back entirely." Her tone was mischievous, and the gleam in her eyes suggested that she enjoyed the banter just a little too much.

Percy's frown deepened, a mix of affection and mild annoyance crossing his features. "You're both terrible and adorable, you know that, right?" he said, shaking his head with a resigned smile. "Now, come on! We have more important things to focus on."

The trio moved in unison, their footsteps echoing softly in the damp air as they ventured deeper into the dimly lit sewer tunnels. The musty smell of the underground mingled with the coolness of the evening as they approached an area where a metal grate had once barred entry from the surface above. Now, only a gaping opening remained.

"Whoa! Where did this metal staircase come from!?" Nieren exclaimed, her voice echoing in surprise as she lifted her gaze to the imposing structure that had seemingly appeared from nowhere.

Percy and Dalia exchanged glances, a knowing look passing between them that suggested a shared secret. They then shifted their attention to Nieren, a hint of mischief still lingering in their expressions.

"This is most likely Lady Rya's magic," Percy explained, his voice steady yet filled with awe.

"S-She did this!?" Nieren asked, her brows furrowing in disbelief as shock washed over her features. The revelation was startling, and she could hardly wrap her mind around it.

"Yeah," Dalia chimed in, her voice softening as she spoke about their mysterious ally. "Alpha is quite a powerful mage. She may be a dark elf, but she saved my life, and I'll be forever grateful to her for that." Her sincerity was palpable, and there was a deep respect in her tone that highlighted the bond they shared.

"Yeah, she saved all of our lives," Percy added, his gaze drifting momentarily to Dalia. "I wouldn't be here, living my dream with the woman I love, if it wasn't for her." Dalia's cheeks flushed pink, a tender smile spreading across her face at his affectionate words.

'She saved them both!? What could have compelled her to do that? She's a dark elf, after all; surely there's a reason for her actions, right?' Nieren pondered, her mind racing with questions as she tried to piece everything together.

Together, the trio descended the metal staircase, each step resonating in the eerie silence of the sewers as they made their way to the ground level outside the fortress-like walls of Ironside. The twin moons hung low in the sky, nearly full, casting a silvery glow that illuminated their path. A chilly breeze whispered through the air, ruffling their hair and adding a sense of urgency to their mission.

"Dalia, have you picked up their scent again? I can't sense anything from our current position," Percy asked, his brow furrowed in concentration as he scanned the surroundings, his instincts as a tracker kicking into high gear.

"It's faint," Dalia replied, her keen senses attuned to the subtle shifts of the night. "It's coming from somewhere towards the hills over there." She gestured thoughtfully, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the distant landscape.

"You're the best, Dalia," Percy said, his voice warm and affectionate as he pulled her into a gentle hug, his eyes sparkling with admiration.

Dalia felt her cheeks heat up, warmth flooding her as she looked down shyly. When Percy pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head, her heart raced, and she couldn't help but smile from the inside out.

'H-He's so cute! My mind is racing with too many thoughts,' Nieren mused to herself, her cheeks also coloring with a light blush as she watched the couple interact.

With renewed determination, the three of them set off once more, their hearts racing as they followed the trail of Rya and her captors, the promise of adventure and danger electrifying the air around them.

After traveling for some time under the pale glow of the twin moons, Dalia, Percy, and Nieren stumbled upon a clearing nestled among a few towering trees that swayed gently in the night breeze.

"Look, horse tracks!" Nieren exclaimed, her voice a mix of excitement and curiosity as she crouched down to examine the imprints in the soft earth. The tracks were fresh, indicating recent passage.

Percy squinted into the distance, his gaze scanning beyond the forest's edge where the majestic silhouettes of mountains loomed ahead, their peaks illuminated only by the silvery light of the moons. "So, they must have had someone waiting for them? Hmm? It seems like they headed northward," he deduced, tracing the direction with his finger.

Dalia's brow furrowed as she peered intently at the mountain range. "Is that Mount Galfrei?" she asked, her voice tinged with a mix of recognition and concern.

Nieren nodded earnestly, her eyes sparkling with the thrill of adventure. "Yes, that's Mount Galfrei. It's probably a two-hour trek from here by horse... maybe double that on foot," she estimated, glancing back at her companions.

Percy, ever the strategist, turned to Nieren. "Great. Lady Nieren, would you lead the way? My vision in this darkness isn't quite as sharp as yours."

"S-Sure thing, Sir Percy," Nieren replied, her voice steadying with determination as she stepped forward to take the lead, her keen senses attuned to the surroundings. Dalia and Percy followed closely, their footsteps synchronizing as they pushed deeper into the nocturnal wilderness.

The trio continued their march through the night, the air cool and crisp, for a couple of hours until they reached the edge of a ravine, where a small stream babbled softly at the base of the mountain, its waters dancing over smooth stones.

"Wait! Hold on, you two!" Dalia commanded, her tone firm and urgent as she raised a hand to stop.

Percy halted immediately. "What is it?" he asked, concern etching his features.

Dalia inhaled deeply, her senses sharpening. "I smell something ahead of us! It's definitely the scent of humans," she said, the weight of urgency hanging in her voice.

"Humans? Nieren, do you see anything?" Percy asked, glancing at Nieren.

"Okay..." Nieren replied, her expression shifting to one of concentration as she attuned her ears to the ambient sounds of the night. "I can hear footsteps... I think they're about 50 feet in front of us, behind that large boulder," she whispered, pointing subtly in the direction of her findings.

"Dalia, let's move quickly," Percy instructed, his voice low and precise. "We need to grab some prisoners if they are with the Black Roses. Nieren, keep an eye out. If there are more than two of them, take out the extras, understood?"

"Y-Yes, Sir Percy," Nieren affirmed, determination glowing in her eyes as she grasped her bow tightly.

Dalia grinned, a flicker of mischief lighting her features. "Hehe. Gamma and I will sweep around the edge to try and flush them out. We're counting on you, Woody." She readied her claws, her adrenaline starting to surge.

"Hey! You're not going to stop calling me that, are you, Fuzzball?" Nieren shot back playfully, hiding her smirk as the camaraderie among them grew. "I said I got you covered. So go ahead!"

"Now you're getting it! Come on, Gamma! It's time to hunt!" Dalia declared, excitement coursing through her as she motioned for Percy to follow.

The three of them crouched behind a large rock near the hillside, their hearts racing with anticipation. As they waited for their targets to reveal themselves, Nieren swiftly cloaked herself, her form blending seamlessly with the shadows, and scouted ahead for higher ground. Meanwhile, Dalia and Percy remained hidden behind the larger rock, holding their breaths, poised to act when the moment was right. The tension in the air was palpable as they prepared for the encounter that lay just ahead.

"Here comes one now...They're coming from the north." Dalia whispered as she poked her head around the side of the rock.

"Can you tell if they're with the Black Roses?" Percy whispered back.

Dalia focused on the figure until she spotted the man's Black Rose uniform on his chest.

"Yep. They're with the Roses, alright." Dalia said in a whisper.

"Good. Let's get him!" Percy said as he moved out from his hiding spot and leaped at the man.
