Chapter 3 - Fading Shell

Chapter 3: Fading Shell

Aeron's new body shivered as it stood beneath the dimming forest light. The Emberfur Squeaker's legs trembled with every step, and though he could move, the truth lingered in his mind: this body was not his. It was borrowed. Dying. Already beginning to rot.

The forest around him breathed like a living thing. Shadows stretched as the sun dipped below the horizon. Strange glowing spores floated lazily in the air, lighting the undergrowth in dull blues and purples. The trees—twisted and towering—had bark that gleamed faintly, like skin slick with dew. The air smelled of wet moss, old roots, and decay.

Aeron took another step forward. His small paws pressed into the soft dirt, sticky with blood and fallen leaves. He could feel the cold seep through the Squeaker's fur. This body was not warm like his old human one. It was quiet inside. Too quiet. No heartbeat. No breath. Just the feeling of meat being worn like a cloak.

He paused by a moss-covered root, eyes scanning the shadows. Strange insects flickered like sparks in the dark. A buzzing sound filled the air, low and constant, like a whisper too quiet to understand.

Aeron: "This world is cruel… But I need to survive. I can't crawl forever."

He clenched the Squeaker's tiny claws. The corpse's muscles tensed, barely holding together. Already, he could feel small parts of the host weakening. A stutter in the steps. A twitch in the tail.

> [Warning: Host Decomposing – 19:02 Remaining]

Aeron winced. The timer was more than a reminder—it was a countdown to helplessness. Again.

But he wasn't going to waste it. Not this time.

He walked through the underbrush, careful not to alert any predators. The small red-furred body allowed him to move quietly, low to the ground. He followed a narrow trail, marked by deep claw tracks and tiny bones. Something else had walked this path—and it wasn't friendly.

He paused beside a hollow tree, pressing against the bark. The Corpse Memory skill gave him some instinct for the Squeaker's movements, how it hunted, ran, hid. The body knew where to place its weight. How to balance. But none of that helped with the stink of decay beginning to rise from its skin.

> [Passive Skill Triggered: Corpse Memory I – Movement Precision Boosted]

Aeron: "If I find another corpse, maybe I can shift again. Something stronger."

Just then, he heard it—a scratching noise, close. Aeron ducked behind a root and peered through the foliage.

Something was eating. Ripping. Tearing flesh.

Aeron crept closer, inch by inch. Behind a low bush, he saw it: a creature shaped like a raccoon, but larger, and with bone plates across its shoulders. Its face was buried in the remains of another small animal. Blood slicked its snout.

> [Target Detected: Carapace Scavenger]

Status: Eating

Size: Medium

Host Match: 67%

[Possession Not Available – Host Alive]

Suggestion: Wait for Death or Intervene

Aeron's mind raced. That thing could tear his current body apart in seconds. But if something else killed it—or if it finished feeding and left—the body could become his next shell.

He crouched low, barely breathing. He would wait. Watch.

But then—

> [Warning: Host Integrity Falling – 15:48 Remaining]

Aeron: "I can't wait too long…"

Suddenly, a rustle in the distance.

A sleek, dark shape leaped from the trees—fangs bared, claws flashing.

Aeron's eyes widened. Another predator.

It slammed into the Carapace Scavenger. They fought—a blur of teeth and claws. Bones cracked. Growls echoed.

Aeron ducked, watching as the two creatures tore into each other. Blood sprayed. The scavenger shrieked as the attacker bit into its neck.

Then—silence.

Both creatures lay still. The victor had bled out beside its prey.

> [Two Hosts Detected: Carapace Scavenger (Deceased), Shadefang Prowler (Deceased)]

Auto-Possess: Enabled

[Beginning Possession…]

Aeron moved fast. His slime-like true form poured out of the decaying Squeaker's mouth, dripping to the forest floor. The corpse slumped, empty.

He crawled toward the Shadefang's broken body. Its ribs were exposed. One eye hung from its socket. But it was stronger. Bigger. Useful.

He pushed himself into the creature's mouth, sliding between cracked teeth, down the throat.

> [Possession Successful]

New Host: Shadefang Prowler (Deceased)

Warning: Host Decomposition in 16 Minutes

New Skill: Predator's Pounce I

You can leap forward quickly to close distance.

Aeron gasped as sensation returned. Legs—longer this time. Muscles—stronger. Claws—sharp.

He stood tall, though his host limped slightly.

Aeron: "Yes… This is better."

He sniffed the air. The Shadefang's nose still worked. He could smell nearby trails. Hear birds high above. Even see in the dark more clearly.

> Evolution Progress: 10 / 20

Energy Gained: 6 Units

Bonus Skill Available: Choose One:

– Predator's Focus I

– Quick Reflexes I

– Bone Reinforcement I

Aeron thought fast. He was still weak. Still vulnerable. But stronger than before.

Aeron: "Bone Reinforcement. I need to last longer."

> [Bone Reinforcement I Acquired]

Increases host bone strength and durability during possession.

His legs felt steadier. He walked with more power. Each step was a stomp now, not a shuffle.

But his new shell was also broken. Bleeding. And the timer was ticking.

> [Host Decomposing – 15:16 Remaining]

Still not permanent. Still not enough.

He pushed forward, moving through the forest faster than before. He needed to find something better. Something alive—something to kill or something dying.

As he ran, screens occasionally flickered in front of him.

> [Host Integrity Dropping]

[Stamina Reduced: Tissue Damage Detected]

The host was tough, but not invincible. Time would always win.

Suddenly, a clearing.

In the center—light. A glowing blue fruit hanging from a tall root-tree. Beneath it lay a wounded animal—like a deer, but its skin shimmered like water.

It was breathing. Barely.

> [Target Detected: Mistborn Fawn]

Status: Critically Injured

Size: Medium-Large

Host Match: 92%

Possession Available – Warning: Attempt May Fail If Interrupted

Aeron didn't hesitate. He leapt.

He lunged from the Shadefang's broken shell, slithering across the grass and into the Mistborn Fawn's open wound.

> [Possession Successful]

New Host: Mistborn Fawn (Injured)

Warning: Internal Damage Present

New Skill: Mist Step I

Short-range blink ability through obstacles or danger.

> Energy Gained: 12 Units

Evolution Progress: 22 / 20

> [EVOLUTION AVAILABLE]

Would You Like to Evolve Now? [Yes] / [No]

Aeron gasped. He could feel the strength of this body—the long legs, the speed. The soft, glowing fur. It shimmered under the moonlight.

But most importantly—

This one was alive.

Aeron: "Yes. I will evolve."

> [EVOLUTION BEGINNING…]

System Resources Syncing…

Shell Memory Integrating…

Genetic Profile Adjusted…

He felt his core twist, shift, grow.

The memories of the Squeaker, the Shadefang, and the Mistborn combined. The fear of prey. The hunger of a predator. The grace of a magical beast.

When it ended, he stood tall.

Fur brighter. Eyes sharper. Body stronger. Faster. Whole.

A new screen appeared before him, brighter than ever.
