HYACINTH CITY IS BUZZING with excitement – more so than normal. Word of the upcoming tournament had spread like wildfire.
Repairs to the Hyacinth Colosseum are well underway. Overlooking the repair work is Ludgreat Brickarm, a dwarf stonemason who happened to be present when the colosseum came under attack by three bandit groups known as The Pyros, White Claw, and half of the Phoenix group.
The man responsible for unifying these groups is Fuji Takashi.
His son Fuji Takashi Jr was left in charge of them while Fuji himself had left the colosseum, taking the other half of the Phoenix group, The Violators, and Black Fang to attack and burn down his family home – killing his father in the process.
Assisting Ludgreat are his three apprentices — Grulgrurum Boulderjaw, Krotmac Lavastone, and Bukdrael Grimshaper – also dwarven stonemasons.
"Hey boss, I've finished reinforcing all the support pillars. What's next?"
"Hang on, Bukdrael, let me check. Said Ludgreat. "Looks like two of the on site vaults need to be repaired, and then all vaults need to be reinforced. Here's a map of their locations."
"Boss, I've finished working on the armory."
"And I've finished working on the infirmary."
"Excellent work Grulgrurum. Krotmac."
A shadow falls on the dwarves and asks, "which one of you is Mr. Brickarm?"
Glancing up from the colosseum blueprints, Ludgreat cranes his neck skywards. "I am. Who's asking?
"Names Quake. I was asked to help with the repairs and with whatever else needs doing."

Ludgreat doesn't miss a beat, "I heard you'd be coming. Use your earth magic and check the colosseum's foundation. Reinforce as needed."
"Got it. Earth Magic: Sand Mimicry!" Quake's entire body transforms into sand and then sinks through the ground.
The three apprentices stare at the spot Quake had just been. Stunned that their boss had just ordered a Named Dragon around like he was just another dwarf.
"Grulgrurum! Krotmac! Bukdrael!" snaps Ludgret, "quit your gawking and get back to work!"
All three apologize profusely and get back to work.

Eric per the usual is seated at his desk, slogging through a mountain of paperwork, when there's a knock on his open office door.
"Excuse me, Eric, your guests are here."
(Hallway)
"Would you please put on a proper shirt?"
"That's rich coming from someone not even wearing a shirt."
"Your boobs are practically on display."
"Well your man boobs are always on display."
"Yes, I can hear them. Thank you Wanda, please show them in."
"Right this way everyone." Wanda steps aside allowing Blaze and Misty, who are still bickering, to enter. Marco trails behind them in silence – a small box in his hand.
Eric rises from his chair and comes around his desk to greet everyone.

Eric was once a high ranking member of a trafficking ring known as Soulless. The third largest trafficking ring within the empire. His talents lied in book keeping, client management, and property acquisitions for housing the members, and giving them places to operate from.
Hyacinth City was one such place that Soulless operated out of. Its constant flood of tourists coming and going had made it an ideal location for illegal activity and where Eric chose to set up shop, becoming the colosseum's manager as a cover. How he got that position is unknown.
Then one day Eric struck a deal with Emperor Maxwell Arsenio Jr. In exchange for helping dismantle Soulless he'd remain in his current position as colosseum manager and help identify other members of not only the top two remaining trafficking rings, but also bring down any groups conducting illegal activities in and around Hyacinth City.

Blaze is the youngest to become Guild-master of Hyacinths Adventures Guild. His raw strength, mastery of fire magic, and strategic mind helped him climb his way to the top.
Many people were unhappy with him becoming guild-master. Blaze's response to this is to hold an open contest for his position as guild-master once a day in the morning for two hours. The rules are simple: beat him and the job is yours.
He's always dressed like a pro-wrestler and always on the hunt for strong fire magic wielders to pit his own fire magic against. His eccentric personality takes some getting used to. Blaze and Misty are constantly butting heads over the most trivial things.

Misty is the first female Guild-master of Hyacinth's Mercenary Guild and its longest reigning guild-master. Its previous masters were either killed or quit for whatever reason.
Misty's mastery over water magic — especially when it comes to making water clones of herself, is how she's managed to remain guild-master for so long.
She's another one with an eccentric personality who loses her composure when around anyone or anything cute.
When Marco left the mercenary guild it was Misty who begrudgingly accepted his resignation. She still talks shit about him — both to his face and behind his back.

Five years ago Marco, who was once a part of Crimson Moon and member of the Hyacinths Mercenary Guild, was tasked with dismantling the trafficking ring Soulless.
It took two years of investigating before he caught a break. Eric for reasons known only to him had turned on Soulless. Turning over very detailed records of the group's activities, client list, financial information, towns and cities they operate in, and places where they held the victims.
In exchange for this information, Eric requested his identity be kept out of any investigative reports and he be given immunity for his past crimes. Marco helped felicitate the whole affair.
Afterwards Marco left both Crimson Moon and Hyacinths Mercenary Guild to become the colosseum's armor — citing burnout as reason for leaving. Despite that he still keeps in contact with both groups.
Because Hyacinth City is a hotspot for both tourists and criminal activity thanks to the colosseum, select members from each guild, their respective guild-masters, and select members of the colosseum are permitted to enforce the law and are granted leeway by the empire in doing so.
"Eric, you're a man of reason. Would you please tell Misty that a shrug is not a proper article of clothing to wear without something underneath it."
"Blaze, you have no room to complain when you walk around everywhere shirtless." Eric points out.
"Ha, suck it, Blaze."
"And Misty, you need to consider dressing more appropriately now that we have very important dignitaries arriving for this tournament. They'll be sending adjutant's to ensure everything is ready for their lords or ladies' arrival.
Misty just rolls her eyes.
"Marco, it's good to see you."
"It's good to see you too Eric."
"Please have a seat everyone." Eric gestures to the table and chairs.
"Would anyone like something to drink?"
"Tea for me." Blaze replied.
"I'll have coffee."
"Same."
"Wanda, if you would."
"Coming right up."
After Wanda delivers everyone's drinks she leaves, shutting the door behind her.

Not much is known about Wanda's background, even after Eric had her investigated when she showed up one day and asked to be his secretary.
The way she acts and speaks have occasionally led others to believe she was once perhaps an assassin for hire, a mercenary, or bounty hunter.
Wanda is always sharply dressed, remains calm and collected no matter the circumstances, and always executes her duties as a secretary flawlessly.
Shortly after being hired Wanda's younger brother is hired on.
Seeing that everyone is ready, Eric begins the meeting. "Now that you all have had time to go over the plans for the upcoming tournament. What are your thoughts?"
Marco raises his hand, "before that we need to discuss these." He opens the box that he brought with him.
"Are those the punch daggers that Riho used?" Eric asked.
"They are. I'm the one who gave them to her."
"How'd you get them?" Blaze asked.
"They were sold to me the day prior to pay off a gambling debt. I normally hold onto things sold to me in case the owner returns wanting to buy them back." Explained Marco.
"So why give them to Riho?"
"I got the feeling that their owner wasn't coming back for them even though these daggers had multiple enchantments placed on them, which isn't unusual, but after seeing how Riho was able to make Emmy bleed. I asked Nofreth Anvilbrewer, the blacksmith, to examine them."
Nofreth Anvilbrewer is another dwarf who happened to be present during the attack. He offered up his services as a blacksmith who specializes in enchanted equipment. He's been working out of the colosseum armory.
"Nofreth said the enchantments are Penetrate, Guard Break, Armor Piercer, Defense Break, and Decay."
Misty cocks her head sideways, "why the redundancy?"
"I think the seller figured out how to make Emmy bleed and used Riho to do it." Explained Marco.
"How would he have known you would give them to Riho?"
"Because Blaze, he was a member of White Claw and you killed him when you punched a hole through his chest."
"Still doesn't explain how he would have known that you would give those daggers to Riho."
Eric suddenly blurts out, "the bets."
"What about them?" Misty asked.
"There were several bets placed on Emmy to lose. At the time I didn't think much of it. Just chalked it up to out of towners who've never seen Emmy fight."
Eric gets up and heads out of the room. Blaze, Misty, and Marco exchange confused glances with one another.
When Eric returns he says, "I have Wanda retrieving the books from that day. While she's doing that, here's what I'm thinking.
"Fuji planned it from the start. His guy sells the daggers, he brings Riho here and makes sure Emmy sees her."
Blaze speaks up, "why would that matter if Emmy sees her or not?"
"Did you forget about the illegal slave trade Emmy stumbled upon last year?" Marco asked.
"Oh right. Those sick bastards were selling children they'd kidnapped. It was big news."
"Exactly. So Emmy sees Riho, has me buy her from Fuji, but Fuji adds the condition that Riho has to fight in the colosseum knowing Emmy would partner up with her."
"And he knew the punch daggers were in my armory, and the perfect size for a child to use."
"There's also the way Riho suddenly turned on Emmy," said Eric, "It made me think she was under some sort of mind control."
"There's a possibility that she was under some sort of hypnosis. I've seen it used before in my prior line of work." Said Wanda walking in with the books. "I took the liberty of bookmarking the pages you needed, Eric."
"Thank you, Wanda."
Eric begins skimming the pages – quickly doing the mental math. His face goes pale.
"Eric, how much were the bets worth?"
"Well Blaze if I'm reading these numbers right they total one hundred thousand gold coins."
"That would've bankrupted the colosseum," said Wanda.
"There's only one way Fuji could have known that we had this much gold on site."
"We have a traitor among us." Said Misty.
"And we don't know who it is."
"Not yet at least."
"Sir, allow me to look into this matter." Offered Wanda.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. Your focus needs to be on the tournament preparations. If I need any help I'll force my little brother Sid to help me out."
"Seriously sis? What are you forcing me to do this time?" Grumbled Sid from the doorway.

Sid is the assistant colosseum manager and Wanda's younger brother. But unlike his sister Sid's background isn't shrouded in mystery.
He's an ex-sergeant who was dishonorably discharged from the Templars for severely beating his commanding officer and several of his comrades after uncovering corruption within his unit.
Sid had attempted to report it properly up the chain of command, but because his commanding officer was of nobility and Sid was a commoner, the investigation into the matter was shut down.
Fed up with the whole situation Sid took matters into his own hands. A full year would pass before their corruption is brought into the light. Hearing what he had done and why, Eric offered him the job as assistant manager.
"Had you been listening you would have heard me say I'd involve you only if I need you."
"Which translates to 'Sid, you will help me, or I'll kick your ass.' I already have enough to do as it is. So would you please leave me out of whatever it is you're doing."
"There's a traitor amongst us." Said Eric.
"Shit. Alright fine I'll help. Let's go big sis, you can fill me in on our way to my office." Sid doesn't wait for Wanda's reply, he just walks off.
"If you'll excuse me."
"Let me know when you find something." Eric hands the books back to Wanda who then trails after her brother.
"Let's take a fifteen minute break and then we can start going over preparations for the tournament."
"Good. That'll give Misty time to go put on a shirt." Quips Blaze
"You first." Misty fires back.
"You know Eric in hindsight it's a good thing only two of our on site vaults were robbed."
"I know you're right Marco, but it still bothers me nonetheless."
