That night, Shao slept in the car after driving for most of the day while Yunfeng, Zei, and the others stood guard outside. Lying alone on the seat, he stared up at the ceiling with a sigh. Once again, Jai's father had guarded his son like a hawk. They had barely managed to spend any time together throughout the entire day before the general would appear and separate them as if they were planning some terrible crime.
Shao hadn't known being away from Jai could be this much of a torment. Jai was so close, sleeping in the car only a short distance away, yet he might as well have been on the other side of the world. He could still faintly catch Jai's sweet scent whenever the wind shifted, which only made him miss him more.
He rolled onto his side and grumbled under his breath about how unfair life was.
Meanwhile, in the first car, Jai was lying across the back seat with his eyes closed, pretending to sleep.
His father was sitting nearby.
