A few days after Queen Elowen's coronation, Charles and Celestia finally set out on the journey they had long dreamed of. For the first time since all the turmoil ended, they were free to wander — no longer shadowed by war, betrayal, or Alice's threat.
Their carriage moved slowly along the stone roads of Wonderveil. To either side stretched wide meadows carpeted with wild flowers in bloom. A soft summer breeze drifted through the half‑open windows, carrying the scent of fresh air.
Celestia rested her chin on the frame, drinking in the view. Her eyes shone as she thought of the village they had left behind — the warm faces, the little stalls, the sound of children laughing.
Charles sat opposite, watching her with a quiet smile.
"Celestia… are you happy?"
She turned to him, her smile bright as sunlight.
"More than anything." She looked back out. "I have longed to see all of Wonderveil. I never thought this day would truly come."
Her voice was light with joy. Charles laughed softly.
"I am glad to be here with you, too."
Celestia studied him a moment, then smiled again.
"In that case…" She unfolded a map across her lap. "Let us go to the forest."
Charles glanced at the map. "The Enchanted Woods?"
"Yes." She nodded eagerly. "I have missed them."
He did not object. "Very well. We shall go there."
The driver turned toward the woods. Soon the road gave way to a path winding between ancient trees. The deeper they went, the quieter and more peaceful it grew. Deep purple leaves swayed overhead; sunlight filtered down in streams of gold. Glowing flowers bloomed along the track, and the forest hummed with the songs of birds and beasts.
The Enchanted Woods were unlike any other — home to creatures that spoke as humans did.
Presently the carriage stopped in a clearing. Charles stepped down first and offered his hand. Celestia took it, smiling, and they walked together toward the centre of the open space.
There stood a round wooden table. Nyx, Aver, and Axe sat around it, absorbed in a game of cards.
"You lose again, Aver," Axe said, laying down his last card.
Aver's eyes went wide. "Hey! That isn't fair!" He pointed a finger. "Did you cheat?"
Axe laughed loud. "If you can't play well, don't blame everyone else."
Nyx sighed, looking at his own hand. "I can't believe I lost too."
So caught up were they that they did not notice their guests until a soft voice spoke:
"Hello."
All three turned at once. Nyx's eyes went huge.
"Charles!"
He darted over and rubbed gently against Charles's leg, purring long and loud. Charles laughed and crouched to stroke his head. Nyx closed his eyes, pressing his cheek against Charles's hand.
Celestia folded her arms and pouted.
"Why does he let you do that so easily? He never lets me!"
Charles smiled awkwardly. "I do not know. Perhaps because I once saved him."
Celestia huffed. "If I had not asked you to go for him that day…" She pointed to herself. "…you would never have saved him at all."
Charles chuckled. "That is true." He stroked Nyx once more. "But perhaps he simply feels more at ease with me."
Nyx nodded without a shred of guilt. "I am sorry, Princess Celestia. I really do feel more comfortable with Charles."
Celestia sighed loudly. "Ugh…"
Everyone laughed at her mock‑jealous face.
Then Celestia looked around. "Wait… where is Liy?"
Axe pointed toward a great tree. "Liy? Oh… resting up there."
Celestia tilted her head. High in the branches hung a large dark cocoon, fastened securely to strong twigs, swaying gently in the wind. She stepped closer, curious.
"Is… is Liy turning into a butterfly?"
Aver looked up. "What? I thought she only said she wanted to rest!"
Silence fell over them all as they stared.
Celestia smiled softly. "Liy has finally reached this moment."
She remembered the day she had first met that little caterpillar, long ago. They had walked through so much together. Now Liy had entered the last stage of her life as a worm.
"I never thought…" she whispered, "…after all these years… she will finally spread her wings."
Axe grinned wide. "Shall we wait? I want to see her come out."
Aver nodded. "Good idea. Though… it may take a very long time."
"It does not matter," Celestia said gently. "I will wait." She looked at the cocoon with hope. "We will watch over her. Make sure no harm comes near until she is ready."
Charles nodded. "I agree."
Nyx settled beneath the tree, tail flicking. "If any wild beast comes…" He lifted his head proudly. "…I will chase them off."
Axe and Aver exchanged a look and smiled.
"Then…" Axe said. "…we all watch over Liy together."
And so the six of them sat in the shade of the great tree. They talked and laughed, glancing now and then at the dark cocoon swaying softly — waiting for the day their friend Liy would at last unfurl her wings as a butterfly.
A week later, the Enchanted Woods lay bathed in stillness. Morning sunlight filtered through the dense purple canopy, spilling pools of gold across the ground. A soft wind stirred, swaying the wild flowers.
High in the great tree, Liy's dark cocoon still hung firm — until that morning…
Crack…
A faint splitting sound cut the quiet. Celestia, seated on a stone, lifted her head at once.
"Charles… did you hear that?"
Charles nodded slowly. "I heard."
Nyx, who had been resting, sprang upright, ears pricked. Aver and Axe fell silent, all eyes turning toward the branch.
Crack… crack…
The fissure widened. Bit by bit the shell split, peeling open from the front. From within emerged long, glossy black legs, pushing gently against the walls.
CRACK!
At last it fell open completely. One immense wing unfurled first — soft pale green, marked with natural veins like leaves, each tip dusted with tiny silver crystals that caught the sun like scattered stars. Then the second wing followed.
Slowly a giant butterfly stepped free. The humble caterpillar they had known had become something graceful and magnificent. Its great wings fluttered gently, then spread wide.
No one spoke.
"Wow…" Celestia covered her mouth, eyes shining. "Liy…"
Aver wiped tears from his cheeks. "Liy… you finally did it. I never thought… I would truly live to see this day."
Axe laughed and threw his arms aloft. "This is all I ever hoped for! We all saw you change!"
Nyx smiled softly. "Well done. It was worth watching over you all week. You are the most beautiful butterfly I have ever seen."
Charles nodded proudly. "Liy… you are the grandest, loveliest one there is."
Liy looked at her own wings, beating them lightly. Fine sparkling dust drifted down like starlight. She flapped harder, rising little by little — until she lifted into the air.
She circled the great tree joyfully, then drifted to a clear pool and paused before her own reflection. She stared, eyes glistening.
"Is… is this really me?"
She tilted her wings, turning this way and that, the crystals catching the light. For the first time, she saw herself truly. A slow, happy smile spread across her face.
She turned back to her friends and landed gently before Celestia.
"Thank you…" Her voice trembled with feeling. "Thank you for waiting for me. For so long I feared… I would never live to become this."
Celestia shook her head gently. "That fear is gone. You have made it." She looked at those vast wings in wonder. "They are so beautiful. That soft green suits you perfectly — and the silver crystals… I have never seen anything like them."
Liy lowered her head shyly. "Thank you. I… I must tell Queen Elowen. She will be sad to have missed this moment."
Celestia smiled warmly. "Do not worry. She will not be sad at all. In fact…" She glanced at Charles, beaming. "Next week… Charles and I are to be married."
Charles blushed and rubbed the back of his neck.
"And after that…" Celestia went on, "my sister and Ashveil will follow." She held Liy's forelegs gently. "On my wedding day… I want you to fly above us. I want everyone to see the first butterfly of the Enchanted Woods in all her glory. My sister will be so surprised."
Liy nodded eagerly. "I will be there! I will fly as high as I can, so all may see!"
Nyx purred. "That will make the day truly bright."
Aver grinned. "I cannot wait to see the Queen's face."
Axe laughed. "It will be the sweetest surprise of all."
Charles and Celestia looked at one another and smiled. Only days remained until they would pledge their lives together. After war, betrayal, loss, and every trial — they would begin anew, hand in hand.
And above them, Liy soared through the woods, beating her new wings as if celebrating her own freedom — and the beginning of a whole new life.
........
The great hall of the palace had been dressed in beauty for the day the whole realm had waited for. White banners hung straight along the walls, stitched with gold thread that glinted where sunlight streamed through the high windows. Pillars were wreathed in fresh white and pale blue blooms, filling the air with a soft, calming scent. Great crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, turning the whole space to light. Guest chairs stood in orderly rows facing the dais, while a crimson carpet ran from the entrance all the way to the altar where the vows would be spoken.
Since dawn, servants had tended every detail — polishing glass until it shone, arranging flowers, checking each garland so nothing was out of place.
"Make sure the right‑side blooms sit neat."
"Yes, Your Grace!"
"Straighten that carpet a little more."
"At once."
Footsteps and quiet voices filled the hall. Yet every face was bright — for this was no ordinary wedding. Today Princess Celestia would wed Charles, who had given so much for Wonderveil.
Soon guests began to arrive. Nobles came in their finest, talking softly as they waited.
"Who would have thought the day would come?"
"After all we have been through… at last they find happiness."
"I hear next week it is the Queen's turn with Ashveil."
"Truly the palace is full of joy."
At the front, Nyx, Aver and Axe had arrived early. Nyx sat on a chair, tail flicking, watching the crowd.
"So many people."
"Of course," Aver smiled. "It is the Princess's wedding."
"Let all go well," Axe said.
Nyx looked about. "Where is Liy?"
Aver chuckled. "She said she would not come in with us. She wants to surprise Queen Elowen."
Nyx grinned. "Then Elowen will be truly astonished."
Outside, Liy hid among the flowering bushes near the balcony, folding her great wings carefully so no one would spy her.
"I hope she is truly surprised," she whispered to herself, smiling.
Meanwhile, in a quiet chamber, Celestia stood before a tall mirror. She wore a gown of pure white that swept the floor — soft, layered, making every step graceful. Long sleeves were dusted with tiny beads that caught the light; a crimson ribbon tied neatly at her waist, a sign of the bond to be sealed. Her white hair was combed smooth and pinned high, with small jewels glinting in the coils, while soft strands framed her face.
A maid adjusted the hem. "Turn just so, Princess."
Celestia obeyed.
"Perfect now."
She looked at her reflection, still hardly believing. After war, loss, and sacrifice… she would marry the one she loved.
A soft knock, then the door opened.
"Celestia."
She turned at once, face lighting up. "Elowen."
Her sister looked her over, eyes shining with pride. "You are so beautiful today."
Celestia blushed. "Thank you. I never thought… I would stand here like this."
Elowen smiled. "And once you are wed… will you go away at once?"
Celestia nodded eagerly. "Charles and I have planned it so long. We wish to see all of Wonderveil, every corner I have never known — and rest, at last." She met Elowen's gaze. "Thank you… for letting me choose him. Without you… none of this would have been mine."
Elowen stepped close and laid a gentle hand on her shoulder. "I only want you happy. That is all I ask."
"Before you travel…" Elowen teased softly, "you must stay a little longer. For once you are married… it is my turn next."
Celestia laughed. "I almost forgot! I will stay until your day is done."
They looked at one another and laughed — for this joy was not only a wedding, but proof that every wound, every sorrow, had given way at last to hope and light.
