Chapter 44 - Chapter 53: Brother and Student I

The forest had become an abyssal cathedral. Thick mist wove itself through the gnarled trunks and soaked the weak light that dared to pierce the canopy, turning every leaf into a muted shadow. Two dark figures moved among the trees, their outlines barely discernible against the damp earth. One was on death's threshold; the other seemed to revel in his victory.

Sebastian—his silhouette larger, shoulders hunched as if bearing an invisible burden—rose above James, who clutched at a pulse that was fading faster than the day itself. A slick, black tendril of flesh pulsed between them like a living bridge, threading through Sebastian's arm and anchoring him to the ground below. The tendril's skin was as black as charred bark; it seemed to drink the very life from James.

A slow, viscous liquid seeped from the charred hand that clutched James' heart, forming a small pond of thick red beneath them. The surface rippled with each heartbeat, reflecting a pale, sickly glow that illuminated the surrounding leaves like an omen.

"Ha! Ha!" Sebastian's voice cracked through the air, a guttural laugh that reverberated off stone and bark. His eyes were blazing scarlet, devoid of any color but pain. Sharp claws gleamed with a crimson sheen; they scratched at James' chest as if tasting his fear. His hair—once bright yellow—had turned into brittle ash, merging with the charred flesh of his body.

James stared up at Sebastian, his own eyes dulling under the weight of impending doom. The thin thread that tethered them thrummed with a sickening rhythm, like an eldritch drumbeat. He tried to speak; words slipped from his lips in hollow rasps. "Seed…of …chaos." His voice was a ragged cough.

Sebastian's laughter turned into something colder, more hysterical. "What can I say? Father has a stitch for contingencies—if this mission failed, it would kill you."

James felt the hand of Sebastian tighten around his heart, squeezing out the last ember of life. He could feel blood drying from his chest as he stared at the charred figure with pity that seemed to bleed into the gloom itself.

"Did you not know what the seed of chaos entails?" James whispered, though the words barely reached the wind.

A gasp escaped him; his lustrous yellow eyes dulled to a glassy pallor. "Sebastian… did you sacrifice your wife and child to become this?"

The charred man's smile widened, revealing razor‑sharp teeth. The forest seemed to grow colder around them as if the very air had been siphoned away. He leaned closer, his breath smelling of rot.

"The seed of chaos is a torrent of negative emotion—born from the suffering of thousands." Sebastian's voice was low, each syllable thick with dread. "Like fairies that can turn nightmares into reality, strong negativity can manifest its own twisted world."

James flinched as Sebastian's hand pressed harder against his heart, the tendril of black flesh searing through his ribs. He could feel the weight of a thousand broken promises settling on his shoulders.

"An anchor," Sebastian continued, eyes flicking to James with cruel amusement. "You must become the vessel that attracts these emotions. Plant them in fertile ground—your own soul—and let them grow."

The forest seemed to close in around them, branches clawing at the sky as if trying to escape whatever horror was unfolding beneath. The air grew heavy; a low, guttural hum resonated from somewhere deep within the earth.

"In Solaria's history," Sebastian murmured, "there was an era of chaos—a time when the continent turned into a land of slaughter and death due to a widespread method of condensing the seed of Chaos. Though now only a select few have even known about this history. I worked really hard, doing my part in condensing this seed." He laughed.

James' breath hitched. He could taste metal on his tongue as Sebastian's fingers tightened around him until he felt nothing but cold.

"Do you understand?" Sebastian whispered, voice now almost indistinguishable from wind through dead leaves. "Every soul has a limit. When the threshold is crossed, you become a monster that devours and expands—an existence devoid of reason."

A shadow passed over James' face as his eyes glazed. The light in them had gone cold, extinguished like a candle snuffed by an unseen hand.

Sebastian's laughter echoed through the trees, a sound so low it seemed to vibrate the ground itself. The dark tendril pulsed once more, sealing its hold on James. In that instant, the forest fell silent—except for the distant cry of a raven and the soft, mournful wind that carried away the last breath of hope.
