Chapter 28 - Assassins

Sorry for the delay.

Assassin

It has been two weeks since I started attending the academy. In these weeks it was just one hectic tasks to another as I tried to settle in the school. In those days I hadn't met Celestine for more than a few minutes a day and those were in hallways between classes. One time I volunteered to walk her to class and we went together in silence not saying anything. At the door she gave me a hug before rushing into the class. I froze there for a time then shook my head, 'silly girl' I thought and walked away with a smile. That was the longest time we spent together. But since things have become somewhat loose we agreed to meet up, all three of us, tomorrow.

Today I was just too tired and only wanted to collapse on my bed and fall right asleep. Though things weren't that simple with school duties and all, I'd have to do those first. But I felt the presence of a mind in my mind scan as I stepped into my room. Scars? My heart jumped to my throat, my chest felt the heaviness of fear, and I felt cold all of a sudden. I reached for my sword with desperate speed but before I could even draw it someone hugged me from behind and placed a dagger on my neck. Big breasts.... I thought.

"You are too slow young master," a voice whispered in my ear, disapprovingly.

"Kina," I sighed relaxing, "weren't you suppose to stay hidden?"

"Yes I was, but that's from others not you. Besides I have something to say to you," she let go of me and went to sit on the bed. I just watched her not moving an inch. Kina is a dark haired Asian woman. She was wearing a male's kimono with two swords on her back, hilts peering over her shoulders. She wore silver bracelets and black boots too.

In case you are confused, which you must likely are. The thing is, Kina had traveled to Kingsground ahead of me and Celestine, as they had agreed with her, mother, and Viktora, where she works in the shadows to ensure my safety.

"What's it?" I asked her.

"I am trying to uncover something that might be connected to your safety so I want you to stop going out at night till after that,"

"But I have school duties,"

"Then lessen it,"

"Fine,"

"Good," Kina rose and went to the window, pulling up the panes, "be careful young master!" She turned to a black cat and slipped out.

"I will,"

I closed the window then even though I had homework I decided to call it a day; I'd just wake up really early to do it.

The next day after classes I walked to the cafeteria me and the girls agreed to meet. It was a wooden structure with a big common room for lots of students to eat. I found a table and sat, and only waited for five or six minutes before the girls arrived. Celestine was wearing a long green dress with black embroidery while Celestine wore a white dress, her hair let loose to cover her long ears. Celestine grinned at me as she approached and even Cvela gave me a smile. We have never been away from each other for this long since the day we met each other after all, and we were all showing signs of missing each other.

The two girls took their sits gracefully opposite me. "Did we keep you waiting?" Celestine asked.

"Yes, but I don't mind," I shrugged.

Celestine turned to Cvela grinning. "Did he answer correctly?"

Cvela shook her head and glanced at me nervously.

"What's this about?" I asked curious.

"We were talking," the little princess replied with a coy smile. "We just noticed there's a way everyone talks and there's a different way that you do,"

"Oh really?"

"Yes like an erratic old man,"

"I.... Is that a bad thing?"

"Who knows?"

I frowned. "Fine, tease me but how was I suppose to answer?"

"Won't tell," Celestine stuck out her tongue.

I turned to Cvela with my eyebrow raised.

"No um," the Nimp said fidgeting, "fu... nothing Ah! You were suppose to say no I just got here. That's true courtesy,"

Celestine scoffed glaring at me. "Bully," I just shrugged. Then she frowned. "But on a more serious note," she said, "It's surprising that for someone so uptight as you that you mix grammar like a thug,"

That's because I'm an old man right? Like I noticed that I haven't really got rid of my budding senility even though I was reborn. I got a new brain so I would think otherwise.

Maybe 'it's just in my mind'.

We ordered for spiced rice and vegetables and eat with chop sticks. After we filled out stomachs I asked the girls how they'd been doing. "Surviving I guess," Celestine shrugged then wipes her lips with a handkerchief and stored it into her handbag. Even though Cvela has storage we loved to carry our things. "The schedule is not friendly unfortunately. But thank Sain I have Cvela. Say I don't think you are faring better?"

"No," I said with envy. Why didn't I keep Cvela with me? She's mine! I took a deep breathe in shame as I realize what I was thinking. Mine?!! What's wrong with me? It's this world that's messing with my mind, I decided fiercely switching the blame, making me more like these people. Making me a monster.

I have to take control of myself, have to take control of my life, above all I must know who I am if I am to win this battle....

After I parted ways with the girl I found myself walking through the academy with a spring to my steps. I have been in a dark place these past days as all my doubts, insecurities, and loss threatened to devour me. I realized shamefully that the girls were my anchor, my depression is always manageable around them. I hadn't known I depended on them this much untill now and I hated it. Ah, I sighed, more depressed suddenly.

Anyway I was heading to the clock tower at the east end of the academy. Viscount Xerk had told me to fetch some books for him there before tomorrow's lesson. The tower was detached from the main school area. One has to trend through the woods before getting there. The trail between the trees was wide enough for a wagon to pass and looked well traveled. At both sides I could see the tree leafs brown or reddish in the autumn air. Some where even purple.

As I was looking into the woods..... Something caught my eyes and the next moment alarms blared in my head as minds appeared in my mind scan. This time I pulled my blade in time to block a sword swing destined for my head. Sparks flew and I took a moment to capture my assailant with my eyes.

The man wore a black apparel, Hollywood ninja style, complete with masks that covered the whole face, this one even the eyes.

I knew who he's. He's of the Eyeless assassins of the Highvoids. Which means my father sent them.
