Chapter 159 - The Path of Men (Part 4) - Dream of a Kinslayer

Location: Elysian Ruins, The Final Echo of Heaven

Raizo and Reina entered through the digital barrier to be welcomed by the sight of Heaven turned into a twisted version of Hell. The golden roads, grassy knolls, and springtime blue rivers that flowed throughout the landscape were churned into an abyss of darkness and dismay. The once radiant skies were torn asunder by Outer Darkness as hollow visages of tormented souls and forgotten heroes howled in the breeze. The ever distant sun turned crimson and black; surface cracks like glass etched into its surface. Hands of miasma gripping despair on the conceptual level juggled the harrowing fragments of the beautiful land as if the Void itself was mocking the once proud Final Heaven of Elysium. As the Eldritch Horrors were laid bare before the eyes of the two warriors, one man seemingly walking through the forlorn darkness came to welcome them.

"Welcome to our new home; a glimpse into the world that is to come. Granted, it may be a little unsightly, but we are on the cusp of a metamorphosis that will usher in a new era that will forgo the rabble of the old regime. I must say…seeing my brother's face makes me feel a little conflicted at the moment," the regal voice of none other than Raizo's younger half-brother, Lucian, echoed out thus filling his ears.

"Have you gone insane? Why would you allow this to happen? Surely you don't think the destruction of our home is necessary to whatever goal you have in mind, do you, brother?" Raizo asked, trying to ascertain a valid reason for such insanity to occur. Although the Crusader felt a seething rage boiling in the back of his mind, his current state of mind allowed him to showcase temperance.

"It is necessary for the sake of a better future. You see, Raizo-san, I aim to create a realm of dreams that will cradle all life into the future beyond the destruction of the cycles. Humanity will dwell within this ideal paradise outside the scope of the canvas of Akasha's Archaeus. The cleansing of the old world…the old way of reincarnation will be the true declaration of independence and emancipation of humanity–a final farewell to the struggling parent who cannot seem to put an end to the Samsara," Lucian explained to which Raizo shook his head in turn.

"I've recently gone through and relived the past cycles. Each one was different and each one had a different end; but nevertheless, it was all the same. Perdition wins and everyone loses. Your goal reminds me much of a mentor in the sixth world. She thought like you, the idea of creating a cradle of dreams beyond the Story Worlds; a spiritual adam that would be passed on to the future before returning to a physical state. Of course…here we are in the seventh cycle, so you could see how well that worked out."

"Ah but you see, Raizo-san, my plan is unlike any other. The ark I plan to build will be inaccessible, an Imaginary Domain where the ideals of our lineage will form the cosmic laws and logic that underpins this world. We will be a state of our own, outside of any interdiction rendered upon us by the All-Mother and her sister; vying for control over what the narrative ought to be. Perdition and his ilk will have this doomed storyscape while it will become our duty to find our own way. The Mercer clan shall become the new gods and I will lead us upon an exodus unlike any other. With the power I possess, it is possible.

Brother, you possess power as well. The Mercer blood flows through your veins stronger than your own Arashi bloodline. With my power over your dreams, and your budding power of repelling laws, we can find a new domain…a new home free of our own making…truly free without any influence from any other divinity or ancestral hierarchy. Will you not join me, brother?" Lucian proposed, trying to shine up his case of madness for his brother to support.

Raizo stood still, his fingers brushing the hilt of Soteria, the blade humming faintly in response to his steady resolve. "A cage gilded with your ideals is still a cage, Lucian. Your dream may save humanity from struggle, but it robs them of their freedom. Peace without choice is not peace at all. It's enslavement." He took a step forward, his voice firm. "I've seen the cycles. I've seen the cost of failure. And I've embraced my duty as a shepherd of the future. Your path is not the answer."

Lucian's smirk faded, replaced by a solemn stillness, "Then we are at an impasse," he said, his tone cold yet not without respect, "And words will not change that."

Reina stood between them and glanced at both brothers. Her voice, calm and measured, broke the silence, "Then settle it as warriors. In the old world, honor dictated that matters such as this were resolved by strength and resolve. That tradition has lived on through countless cultures, passed down as a testament to what it means to fight for one's ideals."

Lucian raised an eyebrow, a trace of amusement returning to his expression.

"Traditions of lesser men," he mused, before nodding slightly, "But for the sake of our family's legacy… I will honor this proposal."

Raizo drew Soteria, the blade glinting with an ethereal silver light, "If this is what it takes to make you see the truth, Lucian, then so be it."

The arena shifted as Lucian summoned his power. With a flick of his wrist, the heavens above transformed, a star-filled night sky unfurling like a tapestry of infinite potential. Gates of the Omnipotent Dreamscape opened, their edges glowing with an iridescent light as they poured forth the conceptual embodiments of humanity's dreams—artifacts of inspiration and power. Lucian stood at the center of it all, a serene conductor orchestrating a symphony of devastation. He raised his hand, and beams of godly light rained down upon Raizo; each one an embodiment of a dream, an ideal, a forgotten hope. The light moved with an intelligence of its own, converging on Raizo from all directions.

Raizo weaved through the attacks, his movements sharp and calculated. His armor glinted as he dodged, his speed a blur. But with each passing moment, he felt the domain pressing down on him; his movements growing sluggish as his focus wavered.

Lucian then opened the golden gates of the Omnipotent Dreamscape once more causing the air itself to shift, humming with an alien resonance that reverberated deep within Raizo's bones. The star-filled night sky above was not the tranquil beauty of nature—it was suffocating, oppressive, and infinite. Every star burned with a purpose, representing a fragment of the dreams and ambitions humanity had ever dared to imagine, their collective brilliance feeding into Lucian's power.

The Dreamweaver stood tall amidst the radiant spectacle, his aquamarine eyes gleaming with an almost divine intensity. He raised a single hand, fingers flexing as if to orchestrate the cosmos themselves. His voice was steady and calm, yet carried an edge of undeniable arrogance.

"Do you feel it, Raizo? This is humanity's brilliance, the dreams of gods and men alike. I hold them in my hands now, and through me, they will flourish in a new cradle of existence."

Raizo remained still, his crimson eyes fixed on his brother. He could feel the weight of the domain pressing down on him, a foreign pressure that made his limbs feel heavier, his breath slower. Yet he stood resolute, his mechanized armor shifting faintly as its systems adapted to the oppressive atmosphere.

"And yet, all I see is a cage, Lucian. A golden prison of your making, no different than the cycles we were born to transcend."

Lucian's lips curled into a faint smirk, "You think so small, brother. A cage? No. This is freedom. Freedom from the endless suffering of Akasha's design. Freedom from the Samsara that binds humanity to its failures. What I offer is the end of struggle—a paradise where humanity will no longer kneel to gods or toil under the weight of destiny. They will dream forever, unbound and eternal."

Raizo's hand tightened around the hilt of Soteria, the blade humming faintly in response to his resolve, "You think you're saving them, but all you're doing is taking away their choice. Without struggle, there can be no growth. Without growth, there can be no wisdom. Without wisdom, there can be no knowledge. And without knowledge, there can be no understanding. Freedom to choose one's path enables the pursuit of dreams; without it, dreams mean nothing. Humanity becomes an entity devoid of purpose."

Lucian's smirk faded slightly, replaced by a cold, calculating gaze, "You always were the idealist. But ideals don't save lives, Raizo. Reality demands sacrifice. And if you won't understand Reason, then I'll show you why my path is the only one."

With a wave of his hand, Lucian unleashed a torrent of golden beams, each one a concentrated embodiment of a dream. They rained down from the celestial gates, moving with an almost sentient precision through the air toward Raizo like serpents of light.

Raizo darted forward, his movements a blur as he dodged the beams with calculated accuracy. His armor gleamed with crimson streaks, the energy coursing through it amplifying his speed. He ducked, rolled, and pivoted, narrowly avoiding the blasts as they scorched the obsidian floor around him.

"You're fast," Lucian remarked, his tone almost bored. With a flick of his wrist, the beams shifted direction, converging on Raizo from all sides, "But speed alone won't save you here. This domain is mine, Raizo. Every thought, every breath you take bends to my will."

Raizo's eyes narrowed as the beams closed in. He leapt upward, twisting mid-air as he swung Soteria, the blade carving through two beams with a sharp, resonant hum. But even as he landed, more beams came at him, faster and more unpredictable. One caught him in the side, the impact sending him skidding across the ground.

Lucian chuckled softly, his steps measured as he approached, "Struggle if you like. Fight as hard as you can. It's meaningless. The Gates of the Omnipotent Dreamscape contain the very essence of human inspiration—everything humanity has ever dreamed of, I now command. What can a half-breed like you hope to achieve against the culmination of their greatest hopes and desires?"

Raizo coughed, pushing himself to his knees. His armor was scorched, the crimson glow flickering faintly. But despite the impact, his lips curled into a faint smirk.

"You're one of those who always love the sound of your own voice huh?" He stood slowly, brushing ash from his armor, "You think dreams are enough to win? Let me tell you something about dreams, Lucian."

He tightened his grip on Soteria, the blade glowing faintly as if harmonizing with his words, "Dreams aren't meant to be controlled. They're meant to be chased and struggled for, even if it means falling a hundred times. That's what makes them worth having. Your power might let you wield their brilliance, but you'll never understand their true weight."

Lucian's expression darkened, his aquamarine eyes narrowing, "Bold words for someone who's already lost."

With a gesture, the domain shifted again. The stars above seemed to descend, their light coalescing into massive, radiant orbs that hovered ominously around Lucian. He raised his hand, and the orbs launched toward Raizo with blinding speed; each one carrying the force of a collapsing Story World.

Raizo sprinted forward, weaving through the onslaught with deadly timing. But the domain's oppressive nature was escalating in the toll that was stressing his body. His movements grew heavier, his strikes less effective. One orb grazed his shoulder, the impact sending him stumbling. Another struck him square in the chest, driving him to the ground.

Lucian loomed over him, his voice calm but tinged with disdain, "This is the power of humanity's dreams, Raizo—the foundation of gods, the inspiration of kings. And now, it belongs to me."

Raizo coughed, blood dripping from the corner of his mouth. But as Lucian turned to deliver the final blow, the Crusader's smirk widened.

"You talk too much."

Before Lucian could react, Raizo's aura flared. The faint yellow lightning that had flickered around him erupted into a storm of energy, swirling violently around his form. The oppressive weight of the domain seemed to shatter, the golden light dimming as Raizo's presence grew. His eyes glowed a deep, burning re;, the electricity around him shifted to a maroon hue with a platinum outline.

The armor of Janus began to transform, its modular plates shifting and reassembling into a sleeker, more radiant form. The platinum sheen of his new armor reflected the maroon lightning that crackled across its surface. Red streaks appeared in his white hair, the energy radiating from him bending the very fabric of the Dreamscape.

Raizo stood tall, his voice steady and unyielding, "You think you've built something eternal, Lucian. But enlightenment is like the sun. No matter how much you try to block it, its light will always find a way."

Lucian's expression faltered, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face as Raizo raised Soteria, the blade glowing brighter than ever.

"Let me show you the truth, brother. The Tao… the path to the Atman beyond Samsara isn't bound by dreams—it's eternal. And it cannot be lost."

The atmosphere around them grew electric as Raizo's transformed aura crackled with raw power. The maroon lightning, now outlined in a more brilliant platinum, surged outward in waves, fracturing the oppressive dreamscape Lucian had woven. The stars in the sky above flickered violently, their light dimming under the unrelenting brilliance of Raizo's ascension. His crimson eyes burned with resolve as he slowly raised Soteria, the sword humming with an energy that seemed to resonate with the very fabric of existence.

Lucian, standing amidst the crumbling remnants of his dream, felt the shift in power, the undeniable force of his brother's will pressing against him like the weight of a thousand worlds. For the first time, his calm demeanor wavered; his aquamarine eyes narrowed with unease.

Raizo's voice rang out, steady and clear, cutting through the chaotic symphony of destruction like a clarion call.

"This power… is the culmination of everything I've walked through, every trial, every failure. I named it—Liberation of the Storm."

As he spoke the name—his now fully white hair, streaked with crimson—flared with the intensity of his energy. The maroon lightning surged around him in a spiraling tempest, bending the very laws of Lucian's omnipotent domain. The air vibrated with an almost musical resonance, a hymn of defiance that echoed across the battlefield.

With a mighty swing of his sword, Raizo unleashed a tidal wave of energy—a storm of light and power that consumed everything in its path. The wave surged forward like a living force, obliterating the golden gates of the Omnipotent Dreamscape, drowning Lucian's carefully crafted universe in its radiance. The oppressive weight of the dream was lifted, replaced by the undeniable truth of Raizo's resolve. Lucian stood frozen as the wave crashed over him, his form silhouetted against the blinding light. The dreamscape dissolved around him, the stars snuffed out, the golden expanse reduced to ash. For a moment, all was silent, the light fading to reveal the battlefield, now barren and quiet.

Lucian laid on the ground, his once-pristine coat now tattered, his eyes clouded with disbelief. Reina stepped forward, her presence calm yet commanding. She knelt beside him, her hands glowing faintly as she conjured ethereal cuffs that bound his wrists. The light of the cuffs shimmered with her authority over fate that even Lucian could not resist.

Raizo approached slowly, his form still glowing faintly with the residual energy of his transformation. He sheathed Soteria, the blade returning to its dormant state with a soft hum. His expression was calm but firm as he looked down at his fallen brother.

Lucian broke the silence, his voice strained but steady, "You've won. The duel is yours. But why… why didn't you kill me?"

Raizo paused, his crimson gaze softening just slightly, "Because, Lucian, despite it all you're still my brother. I would never spill your blood. We've lost enough heroes of Elysium. Regardless of how you feel about me, our father would be pained to see us in such a state; nor would he desire such a saddening conclusion."

He crouched beside him, his voice low but steady, "You may have lost this duel, but that doesn't mean you've lost everything. You're still alive, still here. Learn from this, Lucian. Learn what it means to walk the path of struggle, to embrace the strength it gives you, rather than trying to shield humanity from it."

Lucian's aquamarine eyes flickered with a mix of anger and sorrow as he looked at Raizo, "You truly believe that struggle is the answer? That suffering and pain are necessary for humanity's growth?"

Raizo stood, his form silhouetted against the fading remnants of light from his storm, "I don't believe it, Lucian. I know it. The only way forward is through the trials we face, not by running from them. That's the truth you refuse to see."

Reina tightened the cuffs, her expression firm yet not unkind, "The duel is settled. By the terms you agreed to, Lucian, you must now follow Raizo's worldview. It's time to put aside your dream and face reality."

Lucian closed his eyes, his body sinking further into the barren ground. For the first time, he felt the weight of defeat—not just in the duel, but in his ideals. Yet amidst the bitterness, a small flicker of something else stirred—an ember of understanding, faint but undeniable.

Raizo turned, his armor gleaming faintly in the dim light as he began to walk away. His voice carried over his shoulder, quiet but resolute.

"You're my brother, Lucian. And no matter how far you stray, I'll always believe in you. But belief isn't enough. Now, you need to believe in yourself—not as a dreamer, but as a man."

Reina smiled upon seeing the maturity displayed by Raizo. In her mind, he was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.

The scene faded into stillness, the echoes of their clash lingering in the air as the first stars began to return to the blackened sky above.
