Chapter 6 - The Bigger Picture

After a short while of running, Virion, Oslo, and the others make it into what looks to be a residential building.

"Everyone take a quick rest. Especially you young one." One of the guys in the group says while looking at Virion

"Thanks, you are?" Still breathing quite heavily Virion gives his appreciation to the man

"I'm Blake, Good to meet you…?"

"Virion."

"Good to meet you Virion. Now let's rest up."

Saying so, all of the members of the group found a place to sit down and gain their energy back. Meanwhile, Virion slumped against a wall immediately and closed his eyes. Not being able to sleep however, he just sat there, exhausted.

Resting for maybe half an hour, the group finally got back up. Virion wasn't quite in his peak condition but it was as good as it was gonna get. Even though his legs still hurt like crazy, he would be able to run if the need arose.

"Alright, we're gonna go back to Lewis. Any objections?" Blake asked but the question was followed by silence. "Good, then let's go."

The group got everything together and is ready to leave in an instant. It seems like they've been doing this for quite a while, as if they were trained for this.

"Stay with me kid." Oslo said to Virion as he passed him while heading out the door.

Nodding his head, Virion follows him and sticks close. The group begins to slowly make their way along the roads, occasionally dipping into a building or alleyway to hide from the small creatures.

The entire time this is going on however, they can still hear the sounds of the machine gun from behind them. It seems the military hadn't given up on trying to kill the monster. In fact they might have added some more firepower as now it was beginning to sound like explosions as well. Whether it was working or not though the group was unsure of.

Good things seem to not last in this world however. As the group ducked into an alleyway to hide from some creatures passing, some more immediately appeared from deeper in the alleyway. Luckily, it seemed to only be about two or three of them.

Not noticing the group immediately however, the creatures start looking around and sniffing. Quietly trying to back away from them, a noise sounds out from under the shoe of one of the members of the group.

"Shit." Multiple of them say at once.

"Let them have it!" Blake shouted in a quiet voice so only his team members could hear.

Almost immediately upon receiving this order, an arrow was fired out from Oslo's crossbow, the same one Virion had seen him holding when they first met. With the arrow tearing through the air, it landed in the neck of one of the creatures. After getting hit in the neck by the arrow, the dog looking creature collapses to the ground while running at the group, slamming into the wall while doing so.

Upon looking closer, Virion can see that it isn't quite dead, but it is heavily injured. It's truly incredible how strong and resilient these things are. However, noticing the arrow in the neck of the creature, Virion remembers about the arrow in the one that he had killed in the office.

'Did Oslo shoot that one too?' Thinking of such a thing Virion glanced over at the group.

After glancing over, Virion noticed that the group was in some kind of formation, one they must have been very familiar with. They all held different types of melee weapons, there was a bat with barbed wire on it, there was a metal pole, a crowbar, and finally, Blake had an entire sword.

'Where the hell did he get a sword? Is that thing real?' Virion thought to himself while seeing all the different weapons they had.

All he had was a pocket knife and they had these things, he really wanted something as well.

As the creatures got closer Blake stepped to the side to handle one while the others handled the second one. Watching as the second one approaches the group first, Virion sees them all prepare to fight it.

Seeing the creature get hit by the baseball bat with barbed wire, its head got slung to the side from the force of the impact. Immediately following this, the other two members acted and hit it on both sides of the head at once. Practically squishing its head between a metal pole and a crowbar, the creature's head looks as if it was about to pop.

Realizing that the fight is over, Virion glances over at Blakes fight. Not having seen what happened while he was focusing on the group fight, he sees that the dog-like creature lay on the ground, completely split in half from front to back.

Struggling not to throw up, Virion looked away from the gruesome scene he just saw. However all he could think about was the blood and guts spilling out of the corpse.

"Get used to it kid, this is what we have to do from now on." Oslo figuratively gave Virion a pat on the back.

"I encountered one of these things in an office earlier with an arrow in it, was that yours?" Still gagging and trying not to vomit, Virion manages to ask what was on his mind.

"Where was the arrow at?"

"In the stomach."

"Ah, yeah that was mine. I tried shooting it from quite far away but missed and hit it in the stomach by accident. Did you kill it?"

"Yeah, it was awful."

"It's just something you'll have to do kid, we don't have a choice now."

In the corner of his eye, Virion sees that Blake is walking over to the one that Oslo had shot in the neck. Upon reaching the thing, Blake stabs his sword into the creature's head, putting an end to it quickly.

"Let's keep moving, the blood will draw more in."

Staying quiet, everyone nodded and went back out into the street after making sure it was clear.

After quite a bit more ducking and dodging the creatures they came across, they successfully made it back to Lewis without alerting any more of them. Walking inside, they immediately head for where Lewis normally stays.

"Yo, Lewis, guess who-" As Blake was talking, Oslo cut him off.

"Sorry, but we need to get everyone and leave now, this is the best time."

"Leave where? You know a way out?" Lewis asks.

"Not really, but would you rather stay here? The military is out there drawing the attention of the big ones, we won't get a better chance than this."

"A lot of people aren't prepared for that, they could die!" Lewis seemed to really care for the people, it was as if he had known them for a long time.

"We have to take that chance. It may sound heartless but if we don't leave now, not just a few, but all of us will probably die." Oslo continued to try to convince Lewis.

"I agree with Oslo this time Lewis, he's right, we won't get a better chance than this." Unexpectedly, Blake seemed to agree with Oslo, wanting to use this as a chance to get out of this city.

Lewis went quiet for a few seconds, seemingly in deep thought, when all of a sudden he breathed out a deep sigh.

"I understand, you're right. I need to look at the big picture. We'll do it that way then, I'll gather everyone up and we'll leave as soon as possible." Lewis seemed to be quite distressed having to say this, but he had a determined look in his eyes. It was something he had to do, for the greater good.

"Take this first, give it to the people. It's food and drinks that I found." Virion said to Lewis while handing him the bags he stored the stuff in. Surprisingly, he had managed to hold onto them for the entire time they were on the run.

"Thank you. I'll pass it out before we leave."

Walking away from the group Lewis began to announce that they would be leaving shortly and for everyone to get everything they need before that happens. After doing that he began distributing the food and drinks to people. There wasn't enough for everyone however so it was decided by luck. Some people were obviously upset and began causing a ruckus.

"Take another break in the meantime." Blake said towards the team.

Nodding their heads, everyone found a place to sit down once again. This time however, instead of resting up to fight back, they were resting up to escape. They could not fail now, to fail meant death. Not only the death of them, the death of the entire group.

Feeling the exhaustion hit him, Virion collapsed into a chair and almost immediately fell into a deep sleep, completely ignoring the sounds around him. Who knows whether it will be his last. Either way, tomorrow is either going to be the end, or the beginning. They will escape or die trying.
