A divine portfolio is the source of a god's power; it is the organ that creates divine magic for the divine being to use. But that description itself is misleading, and it is the misleading notion that the mortals' scholars were taught and fed to keep them ignorant. AO was an abomination, and he was never a benevolent or malevolent being. As a creature of the void, he created both good and evil, all so they could keep each other in check.
The gods were born as AO's immune system to protect the universe that was inside his body. The same way a human's immune system protects their body, and just as those cells know no evil or good, the gods also don't.
