Chapter 298 - Chapter 298 - For Humanity!

[Chapter Size: 3100 Words.]

Third Person POV.

The Wall.

...

...

As Daemon had predicted, the White Walkers finally marched south over the last two moons. They no longer remained hidden. Now they had begun advancing during the night.

Surely, the Night King had become far more cautious after what had happened beyond the Wall two moons ago.

And finally, the army of the dead was about to reach the Wall within the next few days.

Quickly, everyone got to work. By this point, the Night's Watch had already received enough training to face that enemy. Men from the North, the Vale, the free folk, the wildlings, and even Skagos stood ready atop the Wall.

The four dragons were also in position.

Bran constantly monitored every movement of the White Walkers. They no longer even bothered hiding within the mist, instead splitting into several groups of tens of thousands.

Although the storm no longer followed them, the cold consumed every region they crossed, while the massive army advanced across the snow, raising a thick white mist.

In any case, the entire army of the living prepared itself. Men hurried to their sentry positions all along the Wall. It had already become clear that the dead would concentrate all their forces at a single point, indicating that they intended to wage an all-out battle.

So, atop the Wall above Castle Black, every position began to be occupied.

Entire armies were also positioned before Castle Black, all in formation, wielding dragonglass weapons as they drilled.

Not only was dragonglass abundant... At the same time, Daemon had gathered one hundred and sixty Valyrian steel swords from Westeros alone. The lords or their heirs wielded them. Those who could not use them entrusted them to their finest warriors to represent their Houses.

All of them would be responsible for facing the White Walkers themselves when the time came. At that moment, it would be a move serving only as a counterattack. Daemon would not use the same strategy that had been employed at King's Landing.

This time, he would do the exact opposite. He would use the Wall itself as the greatest defensive fortress in the world to destroy the main army of the dead.

Tens of thousands of men occupied the top of the Wall, positioned with bows, spears, ballistas, and every weapon necessary.

Catapults had been set up in various places to launch flaming oil, as well as thousands of flaming dragonglass shards and sharpened stones. The latter would be even more devastating because each volley consisted of around two thousand small stones crafted entirely from dragonglass.

From atop the Wall, it was already possible to see the enemy army advancing in the distance, raising a mist that covered the entire horizon.

At that moment, Daemon stood atop the Wall, observing everything, while every kind of soldier passed by him, each one bowing in greeting before continuing toward their assigned post.

Daenerys stood beside him. Two more moons had already passed since Aegon's birth.

The boy remained in Winterfell, being carefully protected. A small direwolf had already bonded with him, something that had happened the previous moon. In addition, Ghost remained by his side, accompanied by four other direwolves tasked exclusively with protecting him in the nursery. Barristan Selmy also stayed in Winterfell. Although he clearly wanted to fight, someone had to look after the prince and the future of the realm.

"How many were there again? You said there were four hundred thousand the first time?" Daenerys asked beside him.

She still struggled to endure the cold. Despite wearing heavy clothing made from the finest Northern furs, the wind was almost unbearable.

Noticing this, Daemon wrapped an arm around her shoulders and cast a protective spell against the cold, nullifying ninety-eight percent of the freezing sensation. Immediately, Daenerys felt warmth envelop her body and found it much easier to breathe again.

"You'll have to be careful while riding Nyx," Daemon warned.

"Don't worry. Nyx is warm enough to keep me comfortable," she replied.

Daemon simply nodded before turning his gaze back to the horizon. "I managed to destroy at least a quarter of them. There should be around three hundred thousand over there."

"Wait... Then..." Daenerys looked up at him in surprise. After all, the report had mentioned two hundred thousand soldiers...

Daemon nodded. "Yes, I know. That's why I just called a meeting. Let's go down. Our lords are already waiting for us..."

The two took the lift together with members of the new Kingsguard. After all, Daemon had recruited two more of them over the past two moons here at the Wall. They descended, crossed the courtyard of Castle Black, and made their way toward the great hall.

The men in the courtyard shouted orders, carried supplies back and forth, and ran without pause. Everyone was on edge.

Some were deeply afraid of the idea of facing an army of the undead, so it was normal to see them praying to the Old Gods or the Seven, even though they had never seen such monsters.

Even so, what had happened in King's Landing, in the throne room during the Great Council, had spread quickly among the soldiers, and they had been talking about it for four moons, ever since Daemon arrived in the North.

Daemon entered from the back with Daenerys without being noticed, and the two took their seats at the main table. Those who noticed him immediately fell silent, though not everyone did.

The hall was completely full. Around one hundred and fifty men had gathered inside the enormous chamber.

The greatest lords of Westeros were present, from the North to Dorne. Not only that, but people from all over the world were there as well... Tycho Nestoris, representing the Iron Bank, was present, acting as the eyes of the bankers, who also wished to witness this war. The Sea Lord was there as well.

It was obvious that this conflict had drawn the attention of the entire world.

People from Pentos, Volantis, and other Free Cities had come to the North solely to witness the events.

Numerous priests of the Lord of Light also appeared. Since Daemon's conquest of King's Landing and the war against the Blackfyres, the religion of R'hllor had practically devoted itself entirely to him, calling him the Dragonborn.

Daemon had been quite surprised the first time he heard that. It was the first time someone had called him by the name he was known by in Skyrim. After all, he always had to explain why he held that title in the other world.

Even so, more than a thousand Red Priests arrived in the North. Daemon immediately expelled most of them, as they were not welcome.

He allowed only a few to remain after having a serious conversation with them. After everything the Red Woman had done, he did not trust that religion. Even if he was the Dragonborn, or the chosen one in their eyes.

Even so, Daemon allowed a few priests to stay, provided they obeyed his conditions. They were not to go near the weirwoods, perform sacrifices, or ever burn anyone.

He made it clear that, no matter how much they worshipped him as the champion of their god, he would never have a favorable opinion of that religion after Melisandre had used shadow magic in an attempt to assassinate him.

The problem wasn't limited to the Red Priests. Septons had also decided to come to this whole mess... many of them possessed red auras and harbored intentions that Daemon considered dangerous. Some insisted that the war was a lie. Others went so far as to claim that Daemon himself had created the undead.

As if that were even possible... According to the legends, the White Walkers had existed for around eight thousand years. Even if someone could believe Daemon was capable of creating creatures like them, the very history of Westeros proved otherwise.

Another surprise came from outside Westeros. Fifteen Faceless Men were sent by the House of Black and White to assist him in the war.

According to them, they would be able to infiltrate the army of the dead and eliminate the White Walkers themselves.

Daemon saw no problem with that, provided they killed no one among the living and were not there because of a contract or showed any sign of breaking the agreement they had made previously, when Daemon first traveled to Braavos with Daenerys.

None of them had needed to kill anyone to obtain the faces they wore. Because of that, Daemon accepted their presence.

All of them carried Valyrian steel weapons and would operate independently. If they managed to eliminate even a few of the forty White Walkers Daemon had seen, it would already be a great help.

Delegations from Yi Ti also arrived, having traveled over the last four months. Some seers, or oracles as they were called there, had foreseen that the Great War for the Dawn would happen once again.

It seemed that the legend of Azor Ahai was also very strong in the lands beyond the Jade Sea.

Daemon saw no issue in accepting that assistance either.

Around five thousand men arrived, including approximately two hundred samurai, many of them members of Yi Ti's nobility. In addition, they brought fifty Valyrian steel swords.

During that period, a few problems also arose. Daemon had to return to the south at least four times.

On one of those occasions, Aurane Waters decided to stir up trouble with the pirate fleet he had assembled. He remained hidden near Dorne and the Stepstones while organizing a large pirate coalition.

His goal was to seize Driftmark for himself. The fool did not even know that his nephew was no longer ill and was safely protected in King's Landing.

Even so, he sent thirty ships to attack Driftmark. Daemon learned everything through Bran's visions and immediately flew south.

He also saw the situation as an opportunity to put Daenerys into action before the war against the dead, giving her a true understanding of the dangers involved. After all, history itself showed that even a rider mounted on a dragon could be brought down, as had happened during the Dance of the Dragons and also to one of King Jaehaerys' sons.

Daenerys performed very well. Daemon flew on Viridrax and began teaching her never to stop paying attention to enemy arrows. She was also wearing a full suit of plate armor. Riding Nyx, she launched the attack, while Daemon remained beside her the entire time to protect her if necessary. Since the pirates were completely unprepared to face dragons, the entire fleet of thirty ships was destroyed with ease.

After the battle, they both returned to the North. Even so, they took advantage of the return journey over the course of two days. For the first time, Daenerys displayed such overwhelming happiness while flying through the skies. They made several stops in exotic places just to fuck like dogs in heat.

Daenerys did not hide the fact that she wanted to become pregnant again.

In any case, Daemon still had to return south alone a few more times to intimidate certain men before they did something foolish.

On one of those occasions, he ended up destroying a castle. He had to personally kill an old lord after discovering that the man had sent trusted men carrying a fortune to Braavos to hire the House of Black and White, even if it meant spending every coin he possessed. That lord's House was immensely wealthy, and he was willing to pay any price.

The problem was that Daemon knew the price demanded by the Faceless Men would likely be even higher. Even so, there was the pact they had made before. The House of Black and White was never to be hired to kill one of his descendants or any member of his family.

Daemon simply went to the castle and slaughtered his way through until he reached the man. He explained why he was there, and no matter how much the old lord tried to deny it, no proof was necessary.

Bran had already seen everything through his visions. Daemon also sent a letter to Braavos so that the bankers of the Iron Bank would seize the ship that had been dispatched and arrest the men along with all their belongings and documents. Daemon had no intention of giving that plan time to succeed.

That lord had been consumed by hatred. Daemon had killed his son, and he was incapable of confronting him in war. So, he decided to seek revenge by other means.

That alone was already a problem, but then he discovered that if he could not kill Daemon, he would use the one million gold dragons aboard the ship to assassinate Daenerys or Aegon.

Upon learning that, Daemon became absolutely furious. Even knowing that the pact prevented his family from ever becoming targets, he would never tolerate someone even considering hiring assassins to murder his son or Daenerys.

This time, he did not even use fire. He traveled south with Winter. After dragging the man out of the castle, along with everyone who did not wish to die, the white dragon simply unleashed her icy breath upon the fortress.

Ice was far more effective at destroying a castle than flames. The entire stronghold froze solid before collapsing in on itself.

Even a moon later, no one could approach the place. The cold remained far too intense. In any case, the rest of the period was relatively peaceful.

The survivors watched in fear as Daemon made the old man weep before cutting his throat.

Daemon returned to the Wall and took advantage of the meeting to report everything that had happened in the south. No one certainly wanted to become his target.

In any case, returning to the present, everyone in that hall was discussing the final preparations inside the great command tent.

People spoke over one another. Some shouted at each other while the king remained silent, listening to the principal leaders of Westeros and the leaders of the peoples of Essos.

The presence of men from nearly every corner of the world did not help in the slightest. There were different opinions, different cultures, and completely opposing strategies.

In total, nearly three hundred thousand men had gathered at the Wall, ready to fight.

Now, the living matched the enemy army in numbers.

At the same time, new problems arose at the Wall when undead birds began appearing in the skies.

Archers immediately started shooting them down, while Odahviing himself took to the skies to hunt those that escaped, preventing them from carrying information back to the Night King.

"Silence."

Daemon's voice echoed throughout the hall.

As everyone fell silent, he drew Dawnbreaker from its sheath. It was the sword he had been waiting to use ever since he had obtained it.

Dark Sister had been given to Ygritte. Benjen received another Valyrian steel sword, forged by Daemon from various pieces of Valyrian steel recovered from the treasuries of the Great Houses. With all that material, he had managed to forge three new swords.

Daemon had also asked Lord Stark for permission to split Ice into two blades, but Ned refused. He did not want to destroy his House's ancestral sword.

Daemon respected his decision after all. Robb received another of the newly forged swords.

As for Red Rain, which had been with Val, it was given to Mance Rayder, since she had remained in Winterfell with Lucis. Lafy received another Valyrian steel sword.

Once everyone had finished examining the weapons, Daemon spoke again.

"Let's discuss the plan."

He looked at everyone present.

"Around two hundred thousand undead are heading directly here. But Bran has identified another group moving west."

Daemon turned his gaze toward the young Stark.

"Bran... Could you explain the situation in more detail?"

Everyone in the command tent turned their attention toward Bran.

The boy grew slightly nervous, but he began recounting everything he had seen over the past two moons.

After Daemon destroyed part of the army of the dead, they began splitting into several groups to avoid being wiped out by another single attack. Only recently had they regrouped to march against Castle Black, though part of their forces was heading west.

"As you can see, our enemy is trying to freeze the sea so they can attack us from the flank," Bran explained. "We'll station a force on that side, but we've already prepared for that possibility, so there's no need to worry."

Daemon stood up.

"In any case, I want everyone to do exactly as your commanders order."

He looked at everyone present.

"I'll be in the sky alongside my queen. I intend to deal primarily with the White Walkers... especially the one who commands all the others."

He paused briefly.

"Your main task is to destroy the army of the dead. If you have to fight a White Walker, then do so. But remember, they are faster than any man you have ever faced."

The expressions of those present turned grim.

"If possible, face them in groups of three or four. Though I doubt that will be necessary."

Daemon noticed a few men grimacing.

He knew exactly what that meant. Some were still seeking glory and wanted a heroic tale of facing a White Walker.

He merely shook his head.

"Remember... you're not fighting a man."

His voice became firmer.

"If you want to fight one-on-one, that's your choice. But never forget that you'll be facing monsters."

"And you're very likely to die..."

he added, and silence filled the hall.

"Seeking glory is not why we've come here. We've come to eliminate a threat to all of humanity."

His voice echoed throughout the hall.

"If we fall here... the world ends. Our families... our lands... our titles... our names... our wealth... None of it will matter."

Then he smiled faintly.

"But don't worry. Victory is guaranteed."

"So fight with all your strength."

"For humanity."

Daemon raised Dawnbreaker above his head, and everyone roared.

"It's time to end this!"
