Chapter 121 - Chapter 121 - Maester Aemon.

[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]

Third Person POV.

The Wall.

...

...

The next day, a huge line formed as members of the free folk advanced, leaving the camp being dismantled and stretching the line across the icy desert in front of the Wall, until they reached the other side of it.

Meanwhile, people carrying their belongings moved through the tunnel to the exit of Castle Black, passing through the middle of the courtyard. Even early on, the free folk had already found a good place to begin relocating in the early morning, where they would spend the next night south of the Wall, setting up camp on this side of it.

In the end, the Night's Watch remained trapped, surrounded by their attackers. Some were kept in the ice cells, while others had to stay in their quarters, only being called upon for certain tasks requested by members of the free folk, while a group was searching for rangers who had fled over the Wall during the night and had not returned after Jon's summons.

The free folk had been celebrating all night, drinking in Castle Black, while some ideas about chopping off the heads of some defeated rangers seemed tempting. However, these were quickly suppressed by Mance and his men, stating that Jon would not allow it.

Still, some drunkards spoke too much and ended up being taken to the cells as well. Jon would deal with them later. No one wanted to go against Jon's orders anymore after that, which was quite hypocritical of some—after all, they were not the ones who had won the battle.

As much as they had brought their army, they were preparing to fight the enemy. They had only arrived to finish surrendering the rangers, because Jon and his dragon had done all the work. There was no way anyone could claim conquest rights over the Wall when they hadn't played any real part in it.

He alone had done what no one else had achieved in eight millennia.

Jon also finally left the camp while walking with his wives, beginning to move away from the area along with Daenerys, Lucis, Ygritte, and Val — who was helping Della the entire time, while they kept pace with the crowd.

Winter kept flying between the north and south sides of the Wall, with nothing to do. Later, he went to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea to hunt a small whale that surfaced.

The group then returned to Castle Black along with their wolves, who immediately began sniffing for any sign of danger. With Val checking everything around them, she followed the group, protecting her sister on the way out of Castle Black.

And it was at that moment that Mance approached his wife. He spoke briefly with Della, then returned to Jon shortly after.

"How are things going? I saw there weren't many problems."

Jon said, making sure to look around the place through the ravens.

"Everything's going fine, just as you asked. We had some trouble with our men, but I put them all in a cell. You'll have to judge them later, since they wanted to go through with some beheadings and denied that you had the right to interrupt their revenge against the Night's Watch."

Mance said as Jon nodded.

"If they want blood, then I'll give it to them later."

Jon said in a serious tone. He would not allow any disobedience while commanding the army. He would deal with anyone without turning a blind eye. He needed to set an example.

"Anyway, I'll handle that later.

Right now, I want to check on Maester Aemon."

Jon said, looking at Daenerys while using his cloak to cover his face, his gaze asking her to follow him.

She nodded, approaching him as they walked toward the heart of the castle. But before that, they saw a group of men who had just been brought from north of the Wall, all rangers that Jon had captured. Some were still trembling, traumatized by the visions of the dead surrounding them — a kind of treatment Jon often used when some of them didn't believe the stories about the White Walkers.

In any case, he looked at them, his gaze shifting to the men who were guarding them.

"Release all of them. Keep them in their quarters — the only one I want is Benjen Stark."

Jon announced as his men nodded, freeing the patrol.

"Uncle Benjen... you need to take me to the maester's chamber," Jon asked as Benjen looked very lost, being in Castle Black under such circumstances, and nodded to his nephew cautiously while observing the entire Castle Black overtaken by enemies.

The Night's Watch had been reduced to prisoners, while in just one night, Daemon had done what no one had done in eight thousand years.

After that, Benjen led Jon and Daenerys inside, walking through some corridors, as they saw free folk everywhere, drinking and eating many things from the Night's Watch pantry, enjoying the exotic items from the South.

Benjen knocked on the door as soon as they arrived, while someone spoke from the other side:

"Enter."

He opened it, looking cautiously at Maester Aemon, who was tending to the Lord Commander laid in front of him, wiping his face with a cloth.

"Maester Aemon, how is he?"

Benjen asked carefully upon seeing Jeor Mormont in that state, being the first to enter the room.

"Benjen... Oh, Benjen. I see you're well. That's a relief," Aemon murmured. Despite his age and terrible vision, Aemon had no trouble recognizing his voice.

"Yes. They kept me alive," he murmured cautiously.

"It's not like I was really going to kill you, uncle,"

Jon said as he entered right after with Daenerys, while Benjen remained silent.

Aemon's expression became quite surprised upon hearing that, but he first returned his attention to the Lord Commander to explain his condition.

"The Lord Commander will be fine. Those glowing creatures helped him recover, and now he just needs a few more days of rest,"

he murmured, while Jon studied the old maester with great interest.

Daenerys also looked on with curiosity, her gaze returning to her relative she had never met before.

"I see," Benjen murmured, but remained silent, not knowing what to say, as a quiet atmosphere took over the room.

"Is it truly you? The one they say is Rhaegar's son?"

Aemon broke the silence, his voice slightly emotional.

"Yes. And by my side is the daughter of Rhaella, Daenerys Targaryen,"

Jon said, then turned his gaze to Benjen.

"You can wait outside, uncle. I'd like to speak with another relative of mine besides you,"

Jon said, as Benjen nodded and stepped out, closing the door and remaining outside.

"So our family wasn't completely destroyed, after all,"

Aemon murmured, and it seemed as if he was about to cry.

"Yes. I didn't even think you existed until my uncle Benjen told me about you," Daemon explained.

"May I touch you? Let me see your faces," Aemon asked, his hands trembling.

Jon and Daenerys exchanged a look, but Jon was already approaching him, allowing the old man to silently examine his facial features.

"Oh... This reminds me of my brother," he murmured.

"Hello, Aemon Targaryen," Daenerys whispered, approaching him shortly after, as he touched her face as well.

"A young and beautiful Targaryen... This is good. Very good," he remarked with satisfaction.

It wasn't long before Jon stood near the window, observing his men, the Watch, and the free folk leaving through the main gate in an endless line.

Aemon sat beside Daenerys as they spoke about their journeys and what had happened to their family.

"When I heard the news from the South over seventeen years ago, all I wanted was to break all my vows, even as an old man. When I found out, they didn't even spare the children... My heart collapsed. Not even the children..." he murmured. "I went blind, frail, devastated."

"I'm sorry for everything that happened to us," Daenerys said with a tone full of sorrow. "I'm sorry for what my father made our family go through. I'm sorry for all the pain our enemies caused our family, killing Rhaegar, his children... But we will have justice, Maester Aemon. We will judge and take back what belongs to us," she said, while Jon remained silent, looking at the courtyard, though a closed-lip smile formed on his face.

"Call me Uncle Aemon, please," he said, with Daenerys nodding, and he continued. "I'm happy to see you're still alive. My greatest wish now is to hear that the end of your journey was to reclaim everything that belongs to our family. But I also worry for you. You are the last members of our line. Compared to me, I'm just an old man who will soon die... But you will carry on the legacy, and it won't be an easy path," he said.

"Yes... We just have to fight the entire kingdom now, starting with the North and moving through all of them. It'll be quite interesting," Jon said. War felt like his purpose, and he felt at home in one — which is why he sounded excited.

"And surely you will. A dragon... When I heard rumors that you might have a dragon, it seemed like a dream. But I wanted to believe it with all my heart, even if it frightened most men. And we confirmed it tonight, as we were attacked by the very same... That is irony," he murmured, beginning to laugh softly at the thought.

"I just want to ask you one thing, nephew," he turned to look toward Jon at the window, trying to see him from where he sat. "Be careful not to abuse your power. Show mercy as well. Just as you did with the Watch. They can use mistakes as excuses to spark revolts and bring more enemies against you, calling you the Mad King like Aerys..." Aemon advised.

"Jon will be like my father," Daenerys said immediately.

"And he won't be," Aemon laughed. "He seems like someone very sensible. But even so, your enemies can twist that. Especially when they hear that a real army passed through the Wall with a dragon, led by Daemon... All the realms will tremble," he warned. And he wasn't wrong.

Jon offered no opinion on the matter, while Daenerys continued speaking with the maester, talking about his life here at the Wall and even sharing stories from his time in King's Landing, and later in the Citadel. She recounted how he had refused the throne, despite having the right by the line of succession, because he knew that, as a maester and someone far from the court, it could lead to war.

He loved his family too much and didn't want to see himself fighting for power against his own brother. That's why his destiny had been to come here, as the Maester of Castle Black.

Jon returned to his duties with urgency afterward, while Daenerys stayed behind to continue her conversation with Maester Aemon for the rest of the day.

Jon left a few direwolves with her, along with some trusted guards who could protect her. Even Benjen stayed with her at Jon's request, asking him to protect her alongside the others. Despite the looks he received from the other members of the free folk, he remained there, feeling strange to be obeying the enemy — even if that enemy was his nephew. The nephew who had defeated the Night's Watch.

In any case, throughout the entire day, tens of thousands of women, children, and elders finally crossed the Wall. There was a place, four kilometers past Castle Black, designated for camping, where tents were being set up. Jon went to the site to inspect it and issue orders, as they were to remain there until he resolved things at the Wall, which could take a few weeks.

Finally, with the free folk out of the reach of the dead, a great feast was held. Jon also shared in the people's joy and celebrated with the free folk, while nearly two hundred thousand people laughed and rejoiced that night. At last, they were on the southern side of the Wall, far from the White Walkers who wanted them dead. He went to get Daenerys before returning with her once more to Castle Black.

But that was only the beginning.

Jon was eager to test his power with his army of over one hundred and forty thousand men. He would begin by devastating all his enemies in the North and would bring the entire kingdom to its knees in submission before moving on to the Southern Kingdoms.
