Before Adrien could recover from the shock of her kiss, Alicia shoved herself off him, quick and fluid, slipping free of his reach before his instincts could lock her down. The weight of his knife was still warm in her grip, the rope dragging in the snow behind her as she bolted across the frost-hardened ground.
Adrien straightened instantly, his body taut with a predator's readiness, but she moved with purpose, too fast, too precise for him to snatch her back without a chase and watched what she was up to.
Then came the sound, sharp and jarring.
