Chapter 22 - Third Round - Semi Finals

A week passed in a blur of sleepless nights and bruised knees. Under the relentless eye of Mizuki for choreography and Aoki for vocals, Group A had hammered their rough feelings into a concrete performance.

They spent their days in Studio 4, putting together the concepts of what 'Homecoming' would mean for them.

Now, the day of the semi-finals had finally arrived.

The backstage area of the main broadcasting hall was a storm of hairspray, rolling wardrobe racks, and anxious pacing. The digital monitors displayed the live crowd filing into the massive auditorium.

"Group A, mic checks are complete. You're up first. Please head to the wings," a stage manager called out, clipping a headset into place.

Haru took a deep breath, adjusting his dark blue stage jacket. his heart was pounding so loudly.

Ren bumped his shoulder, flashing a bright, sharp-eyed smile. "This is it, Team. Semi-finals. Let's show them what we built."

"We don't drop the rhythm on the transition. We stay synchronized," Shiro said curtly, though he reached out and gave Haru's shoulder a firm, grounding squeeze.

As they walked out into the wings, Haru looked up toward the mentor's elevated viewing booth. Behind the glass pane, Aoki was standing with his arms crossed. He wasn't looking at his clipboard today. He was looking directly down at Haru.

Haru's chest tightened with a warm, steady resolve. He didn't feel the paralysing stage fright he had felt in the first round.

The stage lights dimmed to a deep, midnight blue. The crowd's chatter quieted to a low hum. Group A walked out onto the stage, taking their starting positions in a clustered formation, their backs to the audience.

The soft, low hum of a cello began the track, mimicking the quiet, earthy peace of Haru's countryside home.

Haru stepped forward into the single white spotlight. He let his breath anchor low in his diaphragm, just as Aoki had coached him, and began the opening verse.

"I ran from the silence to find a voice, Lost in the glittering lights of the noise..."

His voice carried a delicate, clear melody that filled the massive hall. In the next bar, Shiro stepped out of the shadows, his voice slicing through the low strings with a sharp, emotional edge, representing his struggles.

"Building up walls just to keep out the cold, Protecting a story that's never been told."

The beat dropped, transitioning from the quiet cello into a driving, mid-tempo synth rhythm. The choreography snapped into motion. Group A moved as a flawless unit—Ren's fluid leaps weaving between Daiki's sharp footwork, while Kenta anchored the left flank.

Then came the pre-chorus. Haru moved to the center, the stage lights shifting from cool blue to a warm, glowing amber. The movement of the dance became sweeping and wide, mimicking the feeling of soaring.

Ren and Shiro stepped in close, their voices blending with Haru's in a rising three-part harmony.

"But the wind caught my wings, and I finally knew, The sanctuary I was searching for was always you..."

The beat exploded into the chorus. The group launched into a powerful, synchronized routine that required high-speed agility—a level of movement where Haru's natural rabbit-like quickness subtly shone through, making his transitions look impossibly smooth.

They sang the hook together, their voices carrying the core message of the song:

"Now I am flying in the sky, Looking down at the fears I left behind. The horizon is wide, the air is finally clear, I found my home right here."

Up in the booth, Aoki watched the screen showing the live broadcast feed. When Haru hit the center for the chorus, singing the line flying in the sky, Aoki's chest tightened. It was the very feeling they had shared on the rooftop, masked perfectly as a commercial pop lyric. He saw the sheer joy on Haru's face under the lights, his amethyst eyes sparkling with a confidence that had been entirely absent weeks ago.

Aoki's hand gripped the edge of the console, a small, proud smile tugging at his lips.

On stage, the bridge arrived. The music slowed to a bare, echoing piano chord. Haru and Shiro faced each other in the center of the stage, executing a intense, dramatic contemporary dance duet that symbolized letting down their guards.

Haru hit the final high note of the bridge, his voice ringing out pure and vibration-free.

"The sky is big enough..."

And then, Ren and Daiki joined for the final, soaring chord:

"...for both of us!"

The full beat kicked back in for the final chorus. The crowd was already on their feet, waving glowing lightsticks that painted the darkness like a sea of stars. Group A gave the performance everything they had left, their movements matching the soaring energy of the music.

With a final, synchronized jump and landing, the music cut out.

They held their final pose—backs arched, arms raised toward the ceiling lights, their chests heaving in unison.

For a second, there was silence.

Then, the auditorium erupted. The roar of the applause was deafening, screams of "Haru!" and "Group A!" echoing off the high walls.

Backstage, as soon as they crossed the threshold into the corridor, Daiki let out a loud shout, throwing his arms around Haru and Ren. "We nailed it! The bridge was perfect!"

"You didn't miss a single note, Leader," Ren laughed, ruffling Haru's hair.

Shiro walked up, panting slightly, and gave Haru a solid clap on the back. "You held the center. That was the best we've ever done."

Haru beamed, his face flushed and sweaty, his heart full. He looked down the hallway and saw Aoki walking toward them. The mentor had his professional mask back on, but his eyes were incredibly warm.

"An excellent performance," Aoki said as he reached the group. "Your vocal control during the chorus was steady, and the emotional delivery was exactly what the judges wanted to see."

He stopped right in front of Haru. While the others were busy celebrating, Aoki looked down at him, his voice dropping to a quiet, He wanted to reach out and touch his head but he held back.

"You flew high today, Haru."

Haru smiled up at him, his cheeks pink. "I had a good guide."
