Chapter 35 - Chapter 5: The Hostile Takeover

The transition from the absolute zero of the Oort Cloud to the frantic, humid air of the capital's underground command bunker felt like stepping into a blast furnace.

Same Linley, twenty-four years old and carrying the weight of a planetary shadow-empire on his shoulders, bypassed the medical bay entirely. He was still wearing the undersuit of his EVA gear, the dark fabric stained with sweat and the faint, acrid smell of ozone. As he strode through the concrete corridors, he pushed his frameless rectangular glasses up the bridge of his nose—a nervous tic left over from his days pouring over thermodynamic stress tables in university libraries.

The bunker was in a state of controlled chaos. The massive holographic displays, which just forty-eight hours ago had been bleeding red with deficit warnings, were now blazing with brilliant, stable green data-streams. The precursor Dyson swarm was funneling a localized ocean of clean, raw energy directly into Earth's receiving grids.

Elena caught him halfway to the command deck, a datapad clutched to her chest. "The southern hemisphere just came back online. The PVC refineries, the heavy-isotope backup grids, the residential heating—it's all running at a hundred and twenty percent efficiency. The regional councils have called off the protests. Same, the streets... they're celebrating again."

"Tell them to stop," Same said, his voice raspy, lacking any of the triumphant resonance a savior was supposed to have.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks. "What?"

"The energy spike from the Veil was omni-directional," Same explained, finally stopping at the central war-table. He leaned his hands on the metal rim, his oval face pale in the holographic light. "We didn't just solve our power crisis, Elena. We just lit a flare in a dark forest. The Hegemonic Credit Cartel's automated sensory nets picked it up. They know we didn't starve."

The color drained from Elena's face. "Then they're going to send a fleet."

"Not a military fleet," Same corrected, pulling up the interstellar trade ledgers he had spent months decoding. "The Cartel doesn't fight wars; they perform audits. They'll send an automated reclamation armada to repossess the planet. We have maybe seventy-two hours before they drop out of warp."

Panic began to ripple through the command staff. Grizzled generals who had fought the Sovereign's drones tooth and nail were now staring at the 24-year-old former mechanical engineer, waiting for a miracle.

"Commander," Elias said, limping into the room, his own face gray with exhaustion. "Even with unlimited power, our shipyards need months to build defense platforms. We can't outgun a galactic Cartel."

"We aren't going to outgun them," Same said, a sharp, irreverent smirk breaking through his exhaustion. It was the smile of a kid who had just found an exploit in an unbeatable video game. "We're going to out-procure them."

He tapped the console, bringing up a dizzying array of galactic stock indexes, resource futures, and supply chain logistics. "I spent my early career managing techno-commercial procurement for multi-billion-credit CAPEX projects. I know how monopolies think. They rely on predictable margins and risk-averse algorithms."

Same pointed to the precursor energy grid currently feeding Earth. "We now possess the only operational Dyson-class energy tap in this quadrant. We have zero overhead, zero isotope fuel costs, and limitless output. The Cartel's entire regional economy is backed by the artificial scarcity of heavy-isotope fuels."

He looked around the room, his eyes burning with the manic energy of a generation that had inherited a broken world and decided to hack it.

"We aren't going to shoot down their fleet," Same declared. "We are going to use the shadow banking networks we seized from the Sovereign to aggressively short-sell the Cartel's isotope commodities on the galactic open market. Then, we broadcast our energy surplus data. We crash their stock, devalue their currency, and initiate a hostile corporate takeover of their own audit fleet before it even reaches our atmosphere."
