Chapter 3 - Dead?

she looked away avoiding my stare. I glared daggers at her, "What happened to them?!", I yelled.

"Calm down. You won't find any answers anywhere near the throne room", I looked at her confused, "You are going to meet them soon enough". "Alright". We were still silent. "What was his name?", I asked breaking the awkward atmosphere. "His name?", She repeated. "Yeah", I responded irritated. "Oh, it was Prince Kael", she answered. "Kael?", I asked surprised, "I've never known any Kael". "Yes you have", she smiled. "Then where is he now?" I insisted. "He died three years ago", she answered solemnly. "Died?", I questioned. "You're joking right?, you have to be! How could he possibly...", I began rambling. "I'm serious", she interrupted me, "I'm really sad to tell you but he did die". „Why? Wasn't the King there? Why would he let it happen?", I asked, still confused. "King Eric was also there", she replied. I furrowed my brows, "Why?", I asked. She shrugged her shoulders, "He wouldn't say". "Oh". She turned toward me, "I guess you must be hungry, so please excuse me", she bowed and quickly turned around and walked away.

I sighed heavily, "What's wrong with her"? "I don't know". I looked out the window again. "You know, this doesn't change a thing", she added, "We'll still bring you back to your own castle". "Why?", I asked, looking at her. "Because", she replied, "It's the safest place". "Safe?", I laughed sarcastically, "There are people who would kill me for simply breathing" she stared at me with an unreadable expression, "Then what do you suggest we do?" She raised her eyebrows, then walked over to the door, "Follow me". Without saying another word, she walked out of the door. I sighed deeply, thinking about everything. I grabbed a hold of the handle, pushed open the door and followed the girl out of the room. As soon as I reached the hallway, however, she stopped abruptly. "I'll leave you to explore the rest of the hall by yourself", she informed me and closed the door behind her. It suddenly dawned on me where I knew that woman from. 'Wasn't she the one who was helping me with the dress today? But wait, why did she help me?' I wondered. As I pondered over the matter, my eyes fell upon a portrait hanging on the wall across the corridor. In the painting I saw myself smiling, I was laughing as well. My mother, father, and sister, all standing behind me.

"Who painted that picture?", I asked aloud. There wasn't anyone else around. I approached the painting, staring at every detail. There was a little girl wearing a pink dress in the middle of the group, I couldn't make out anything other than her bright blue dress and her golden brown hair, but I was sure that was her. As I studied her features, I noticed something odd about her. She didn't look like a princess, instead, she looked more like a normal human, if I was to judge from her looks. She seemed quite young, maybe ten or eleven years old. She stared down at the ground and played with her fingers nervously. 'She seems pretty lonely, huh,' I thought, I wonder if that was the reason why her face was so familiar. I took a step closer to the portrait. Just then, the lady with silver hair entered the hallway. She was carrying a tray with a cup and saucer on it. When she saw me examining the portrait, she approached me. "I hope you like your food", she said smiling. "How come?", I asked. "Because you are our guest" she replied casually. I looked at her puzzled, "You are a strange bunch". She chuckled, "Thank you. Your Highness" the lady replied bowing. "
