Anubis
We landed three hours after I told Horus we would.
The jet fell through the Zagros and my human gut fell with it. I had worn this flesh for centuries, this tanned skin, these dark blonde curls and this British mouth that learned its accent in Oxford when Victoria still lived, and still the descent shamed me. My ears rang. My breath came short. The white shirt clung to my back. I gripped the armrest and remembered when I had not needed to breathe at all.
It was Suetekh's jet. All of it was his. The wings, the fuel, the three black SUVs that waited on the dust below with their engines already running, the hotel cut into the rock ahead of us. He had always owned things. Gold loved him the way dogs loved me. It followed him through every age and multiplied.
