Chapter 2 - Meaning of bravery

Cypher stood on a small hill in a vast plane and in the distance he could see a dimensional crack that was emitting an aura so deadly that just staring at it made his scalp numb. Seeing the crack only cemented his thoughts, he definitely did not want to go in but he knew that meant slowly awaiting the death of not just him but the entire world along. He's mind slowly drifted to the meeting he had with the council.

" You think we want this?, we do not have a choice here!!" a bold old man sitting behind a long table along with six other people shouted. " Eldighard is right, it's either this or we just sit around and await our deaths" another man spoke. " no this is not right, Cypher is our only hope we lose him then we might as well be sitting ducks. we can't just send him in alone, let's fight together" this time it was a man who appeared to be the youngest one here spoke. " You are still too naive young jarold, you think we would stand a chance against those devils if a dungeon break were to occur? have you forgotten the derrian dungeon?" an old woman asked. After the question was posed the entire room fell silent, everyone was thinking about the dungeon break that occurred a decade ago which almost destroyed their entire kingdom despite it being an S ranked one. After a couple of minutes the woman at the centre of the table slowly spoke "don't you think we are forgetting the key to all this?" . everyone looked at the man on whose back all of their hopes were riding but yet for some reason they had forgotten about him , the woman continued " Cypher what do you think of all this".

Naturally he knew that the only chance of survival was if he went into the dungeon to stop it before a break could occur, but could he say that? could he dive into an SSS rank dungeon despite the fact that he could barely survive an SS one?, he couldn't bring himself to say it and he just stayed silent. Everyone could see Cypher was scared, he was trembling though he tried to hide it gave him away. After moment of silence he finally spoke but it was more of a whisper "i can't ...am scared...." is all he said and then the silence returned . Finding the silence too unbearable Cypher continued "am not the brave hero everyone expects me to be, am scared and am a coward who just happens to be stronger than some people" he sounded like an old man regretfully admitting his past mistakes and saying his goodbyes on a death bed . The silence once again descended but this time it lasted longer until a very old man at the end of the table said something which gave Cypher the strength to go into the dungeon even when he was still scared.

After giving himself mental pep talk, Cypher started to descend the small hill towards the dungeon and when he finally got there he momentarily froze before pushing himself into the dungeon and a white light slowly engulfed him.

Though it was called a dungeon, what awaited Cypher on the inside, like most dungeons did not really fit that word. This time the inside was a completely different world with it's own sky and even some mountains that could be seen in the distance so in short it was similar to his own home, well if his home had a red sky 3 suns and countless swarms of monsters flying around then yeah it did look like where he's from. As he was observing the surrounding Cypher was frozen on the spot. what he thought were just simple monster swarms were actually dragons. Dragons, which were classified as rank S monsters were flying around like a swarm of bees and that was not the most terrifying part, the fact that these Dragons were just mounts that carried demons was what made his heart sink. Directly under the swarming flock of Dragons was a castle so ominous Cypher was sure the demon god himself was in there. It was already too late to return now so his only option was to reduce their numbers as much as possible though he knew it wouldn't change the fate of his planet. It was doomed to fall.

Cypher took out a small cube the size of his palm and poured all his magic power inside, immediately he could feel his soul was disappearing slowly but surely. It was Devvora, he knew this was the only thing that could enable him to scratch the surface of the hell he was about to take on.

As the cube was charging , the words of the old man from the council resounded in his mind " being brave doesn't mean not being scared no, instead it's about not letting fear stop you from taking the necessary steps forward. Fear all you want, hell you can even piss your pants if you are that much scared but if you still move forward despite that fear then in my book you will always be one of the bravest and know that whatever it is you decide to do, we will stand by you". ' funny you say you will stand by me when am going all alone into the dungeon' Cypher thought but the old man's words had still resounded within his entire being that he actually accepted this suicide mission.

The moment the cube was fully charged, his mind was pulled back to his painful reality and he felt a surge of power flow throughout his body but at the same time he could feel his soul weakening.
