After several months away from school, Bertha Haines felt a bit unfamiliar, and her return caused quite a stir since she was considered a semi-celebrity at school.
She arrived back at school just in time for the monthly exam.
Her classmates, not very kind, decided to bet on her performance.
"Two months of classes missed, that's not just a day or two. Even if she's smart, there's no way she'll be first again. I bet her rank will be around 50th in the grade."
"Although she hasn't been to class, I heard April Lane shows her the class notes every day. So, I bet she'll be 10th!"
"I bet 20th."
"I bet 38th."
"I bet 100th."
There were at least seventy or eighty people participating in this bet, yet no one bet she'd rank first.
April, unable to stand it, threw a hundred bucks to the person leading the bet.
"I bet... 1st."
