Bertha Haines actually didn't have a specific movie in mind she wanted to see, so Amos Smith just randomly picked a recently released movie with good box office and word-of-mouth reviews—"I Have a Dream."
Just by the name, it sounded like an inspirational film.
Suitable for kids still in school to watch.
But…
The first scene of the movie showed a majestic river, followed by the sound of a crying baby, and the camera slowly panned towards the shore.
Under the nightfall, a small baby wrapped in a quilt lay alone by the riverbank, its cries growing louder.
Soon, the scene shifted to a father and son.
They had just gotten off a boat, speaking in a local dialect, chatting about household matters.
"Take Grace to the hospital again, and if she still can't conceive...perhaps adopt one."
"...okay."
"Is there a baby crying? Did you hear it?"
"Dad, over there!"
