Coach reacted to the scrawny kid and said: "Ace? How will this kid be the ace? "He is tall for an 11-year-old, but how can he be more skilled than all of you?"
"Trust us, he is!" Except for the other first years, he yelled at everyone all at
once.
"Okay, then we will see. My name is Karl McLaughlin, and I will be your coach and PE teacher here. You can just call me Coach Mac." "Now all of you run 10 laps around the soccer field!"Everyone ran out to the field where nearly all of the first years tapped out before the 7th lap. There were only 2 first years who made it to the end along
with the upperclassmen; one was Magnus and the other was a 5'6" dude built
like Jayson Tatum.
"Okay, next up, dribble drills: cross the first five cones, run to the next one,
and do a behind the back, then do between the legs to the back of the line!"
Everyone proceeds to do that, but very few fail at doing the moves and get
kicked out of the tryouts. Only 20 people are left, so seven more have to go.
"Next up, layup line, run a lap around the court every time you miss!"
Layup lines happen, and everyone besides Magnus misses. Then Magnus
makes a mistake and goes up and dunks the ball.
"TEN LAPS NOW!! THIS IS A LAYUP LINE,NOT A DUNKING LINE!!"
Magnus runs the ten laps and gets back just in time for the next activity.
"Mid-range shots now from the free-throw line elbows."
Everyone goes up to shoot the ball, and a couple stand out to the coach. Of
course one is Magnus, but Oliver and the Jayson Tatum wannabe stood out too.
"Three pointers, let's go!" yelled coach
Again, Magnus, Oliver, and the wannabe stood out, but a fourth person stood
out a lot too, a 5'7" sharpshooter from the 3rd year. "He looks like a 3 and D
guy," thought Magnus.
Finally, the coach separated us into 3 groups: guards, forwards, and centers.
Magnus, of course, went to the centers area, where the coach had them doing
boxout and rebounding drills, but no one could match Magnus' ability.Magnus would look at the other groups to see where he saw a unique
person. a 5'8 defensive unit wrecking people's sh*t in the forward area and a 5v5 happening in the guard area where Oliver and the wannabe were destroying noobs.
"I will announce who made the team right now and the starters right after,"
announced the coach before starting to name people until he reached the
starters.
"Oliver" announced the coach, and Oliver stood up and walked to get a jersey
numbered 1.
"Magnus," I said as I walked over to get my favorite number 4 jersey.
"Winston." The wannabe walked over and got the number 0.
"Saul," the 3rd year sharpshooter, walked forward and grabbed a number 2,
but the upper part was sticking up.
"Vadim," the big guy who was chucking people around like twigs, steps
forward and grabs number 3.
"Okay, see you tomorrow, and be prepared to learn plays!"
The next day I woke up, went to school, and did all my homework before
practice started. Then I went to the gym for practice, where we started with
10 laps around the soccer field and went on to learn plays that were meant to get our shooters open, then ISO and post plays, before finishing the day with 1v1s.
Magnus received the ball first during the 1v1s against Saul and decided to show him how he will lead the team to victory by doing a size up to cross step back, behind the back for an open lane, and yammed it with two hands.
Next up was poor Oliver, who just got backed down into a hook shot.
Winston then did a Hesi pump fake to snatch back, break his ankles, and
shoot a 3 right in his face to win the game.
Then came big bad Vadim; he was the toughest by a lot because Magnus couldn't go into the post because Vadim was strong enough to not budge, so he went for a pump fake 3, which didn't work, so instead he drove left to a
spin jumper, which worked fine.
This assertion of dominance continued until the first game.
