Chapter 5 - chapter 05

Your chapter has strong story beats—mission departure, travel with hunters, deeper forest exploration, river encounter, and the first meeting between Ying Yue and Yi Chen. That's a great structure. But the raw version has problems that would push readers away:

The pacing jumps too quickly between scenes

Dialogue often repeats or feels unnatural

Emotional reactions (especially the river scene) are rushed

Worldbuilding and tension aren't fully developed

I rewrote it into a full professional chapter (~2200 words) while keeping your events and tone, but making the story smoother, clearer, and more immersive.

Chapter 4

The Man by the River

After helping her mother break through, Ying Yue quietly moved aside and sat on the small wooden chair near the window.

Her mother remained seated on the bed, eyes closed, spiritual energy slowly circulating around her body as she stabilized her cultivation.

The room fell silent.

Minutes passed.

Ying Yue rested her chin on her palm and stared at the wall.

At first, she watched her mother with interest.

Then five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Soon her eyelids started drooping.

Cultivation really looks boring…

She stretched slightly and suppressed a yawn.

How can people sit still like that for hours?

If I tried that, I'd probably die of boredom.

Just as she was about to fall asleep from sheer inactivity, her mother slowly opened her eyes.

A gentle smile appeared on her face.

"Yue Yue."

Ying Yue straightened immediately.

"Are you okay?"

Her mother nodded, looking much healthier than before.

"I'm more than okay."

"I feel… energized."

Ying Yue smiled.

"That's good."

Her mother studied her for a moment before speaking again.

"Since you've awakened your abilities, you should also start cultivating again."

"I can teach you."

Ying Yue froze.

Cultivating?

She imagined herself sitting cross-legged for hours doing nothing but breathing.

Her eye twitched slightly.

"Maybe another day," she said quickly.

"You should rest first."

Inside her mind, however, she was screaming.

Cultivation? Me?

No thank you.

I'd rather fight zombies all day than sit still like a statue.

Her mother sighed but didn't press the issue.

"Alright."

"Then tomorrow I'll come with you on your mission."

Ying Yue immediately shook her head.

"No need."

"I can handle it myself."

Her mother looked hesitant, but eventually nodded.

"Then you should rest early."

She moved to one side of the bed to make space.

The bed was small, barely big enough for two people, but they had long since gotten used to it.

Ying Yue climbed onto the other side and lay down.

Before sleeping, she quietly sent Little White back into her space.

The fluffy spirit beast protested faintly in her mind but eventually fell silent.

Within minutes, Ying Yue drifted into sleep.

The next morning, sunlight filled the small room.

Ying Yue opened her eyes.

The sun was already high in the sky.

Her mother was still asleep beside her, breathing peacefully.

Ying Yue carefully slipped out of bed.

She walked into the small kitchen and started preparing breakfast.

Soon the smell of cooked rice and vegetables filled the air.

She prepared three bowls.

One for her mother.

Two for herself to carry during the mission.

She placed one bowl on the table inside the room.

Then she stored the other two in her space.

Just as she was about to leave—

Her mother's sleepy voice stopped her.

"Where are you going this early?"

Ying Yue turned around.

Her mother had opened her eyes and was watching her from the bed.

"I want to leave early," Ying Yue said.

"If I start now, I can finish the mission sooner."

She pointed to the bowl on the table.

"I made breakfast for you."

"Eat it before it gets cold."

Her mother slowly sat up.

"Alright."

Ying Yue then took out a cloth bag of rice and placed it beside the bed along with a few cooking utensils.

"This is the last bag of rice we have," she said.

"You can make lunch with it."

"I might come back late."

Her mother frowned slightly.

"Why don't I go with you and help—"

"No," Ying Yue said gently.

"I can manage."

"I'll be back before you know it."

Her mother studied her for a moment before nodding.

"Be careful."

"I will."

With that, Ying Yue left the house.

The survivor base was already busy.

People were preparing for the day's work.

Guards stood near the city gate, checking those who entered or left.

Ying Yue walked toward the gate calmly.

Several groups were also preparing to leave.

Many of them had large flying birds beside them.

The creatures resembled giant hawks with powerful wings.

They were used as transportation for long journeys.

Ying Yue watched them with interest.

When I get enough money, I should buy one.

Traveling would be much easier.

She was about to rent a horse when someone suddenly called her name.

"Yue Yue!"

She turned around.

A middle-aged man waved at her from across the street.

Ying Yue quickly recognized him.

Jang Yu.

He was the leader of a hunting team that her mother had once worked with.

More importantly…

He had always liked her mother.

Even though her mother had rejected him many times, he still hadn't given up.

Ying Yue walked over politely.

"Hello, Uncle Jang."

Jang Yu smiled warmly.

"Yue Yue."

"Are you leaving the base?"

"Yes."

"Where's your mother?"

"She's resting today."

"But she's already recovering."

"That's great news," he said with relief.

Then he looked around.

"You're going out alone?"

"Yes."

Jang Yu frowned.

"That's dangerous."

"Why don't you come with us?"

He pointed toward the giant flying beasts behind him.

"We're heading toward the Death Forest."

"Which mission did you choose?"

"Herb gathering."

Jang Yu nodded.

"That's perfect."

"We're going near the forest anyway."

"You can ride with us."

"We'll drop you off there."

Ying Yue hesitated briefly.

But traveling by flying beast would save a lot of time.

"Alright," she agreed.

"Thank you, Uncle Jang."

The flying beast soared into the sky.

Wind rushed past Ying Yue's face as the base grew smaller below them.

She held onto the saddle tightly.

From above, the land looked both beautiful and terrifying.

Green forests stretched across the horizon.

But scattered among them were ruined cities and wandering zombie hordes.

After about thirty minutes, the flying beast descended.

They landed near the edge of a massive forest.

Dark trees stretched endlessly ahead.

The Death Forest.

Ying Yue jumped down from the beast.

"Thank you for the ride, Uncle."

Jang Yu smiled.

"It's nothing."

"Are you sure you don't want to follow us?"

"It's safer in a group."

"I'm just gathering herbs," Ying Yue said.

"I won't go deep into the forest."

Jang Yu still looked worried.

After a moment, he took out a small yellow paper and handed it to her.

"Take this."

"What is it?" Ying Yue asked.

"A teleportation talisman."

"If you're in danger, tear it."

"It will teleport you two kilometers away."

"You just need to think about where you want to appear."

Ying Yue's eyes widened.

"Thank you so much, Uncle!"

He nodded.

"Just remember."

"Don't go too deep."

"I won't."

Soon Jang Yu and his team entered the forest.

Once they disappeared from sight, Ying Yue turned in the opposite direction.

Then she walked deeper into the forest.

Little White's voice suddenly echoed in her mind.

"Master… didn't you say you wouldn't go deep into the forest?"

Ying Yue shrugged.

"I also told my mom I took an easy mission."

"But here we are."

Little White sighed dramatically.

"My master lies too much."

Ying Yue ignored him and continued walking.

Hours passed.

The forest was surprisingly peaceful.

She encountered only small creatures.

A few poisonous snakes.

Several rabbits.

Nothing dangerous.

Ying Yue collected the herbs required for her mission quickly.

But she didn't stop there.

She also gathered many other herbs and fruits.

Even the ones she didn't recognize.

Everything went straight into her space.

Eventually, she became tired.

Just as she was about to rest, she heard something.

Water.

A faint flowing sound.

There's a river nearby.

She followed the sound.

Soon she arrived at a beautiful river.

The water was so clear that she could see the stones at the bottom.

After walking all morning, Ying Yue felt extremely sweaty.

The cool water looked tempting.

She glanced around.

The forest was completely silent.

No one was nearby.

"Perfect."

She quickly removed her clothes and placed them on the riverbank.

Then she stepped into the water.

The cool river felt refreshing against her skin.

For the first time all day, Ying Yue relaxed.

But suddenly—

A soft voice sounded behind her.

"Disciple?"

Ying Yue froze.

She turned around.

A tall man stood on the riverbank.

His white robes moved gently in the breeze.

His face was unbelievably handsome.

Sharp eyes.

Pale skin.

Elegant features.

For a moment, Ying Yue's brain stopped working.

Then reality hit her.

"AHHH!"

"GET OUT, YOU PERVERT!"

Yi Chen froze.

"I—"

"DON'T LOOK!"

"Okay!"

He immediately turned around.

Although his face remained calm, the tips of his ears had turned red.

Behind him, Ying Yue hurriedly grabbed her clothes and dressed as fast as possible.

Her face was burning with anger.

Once she was dressed, she glared at him.

"Who are you?!"

But when she looked closely, she froze.

This man is ridiculously handsome…

His appearance looked almost unreal.

For a moment, she forgot why she was angry.

Then she remembered.

He just watched me bathing.

Her anger returned instantly.

Such a handsome face…

What a waste on a pervert.

Yi Chen turned around slowly.

"I… my name is Yi Chen."

He looked unusually nervous.

He had finally found his disciple.

But…

His disciple had been reborn as a woman.

And a very beautiful one.

Meanwhile, Little White shouted excitedly in Ying Yue's mind.

"Master! Let me out!"

"I'll beat the pervert!"

Ying Yue ignored him and crossed her arms.

"So?"

Yi Chen hesitated.

"I… was looking for you."

"Me?" Ying Yue said suspiciously.

"How do you know me?"

Yi Chen hesitated again.

Then he said something unbelievable.

"I'm your master."

Ying Yue stared at him.

Then she laughed.

"You think I'm stupid?"

At that moment—

A white blur suddenly appeared.

Little White had jumped out of her space.

"MASTER'S MASTER!"

He flew directly into Yi Chen's arms.

Yi Chen caught him instinctively.

"Little White…"

"How are you?"

"I missed you so much, Big Master!"

Yi Chen smiled faintly.

"I missed you too."

Ying Yue's jaw dropped.

"Little White!"

"Who told you to come out?!"

Little White looked confused.

"But he's Master's Master."

"He's not my master!" Ying Yue snapped.

"I don't even know him!"

"But I know him!"

"Come back here!"

Yi Chen gently placed Little White back into her arms.

"You should return to your master," he said calmly.

Little White nodded obediently.

Ying Yue glared at Yi Chen one last time.

"And you."

"Stay away from me."

"If you follow me again…"

"I'll kill you."

With that, she turned and walked away.

Yi Chen watched her leave.

Amusement appeared in his eyes.

A completely different personality…

But one thing had not changed.

She was still stubborn.

Yi Chen smiled faintly.

"There's no way I'm leaving my disciple again."

And this time—

He intended to stay close.

No matter what happened next.
