Chapter 8 - The Stranger In My Sanctuary

I have to work, sweetie. I have to provide for him." "So… you have to take care of someone else's daughter to care for your own son?"

"Yes, I have to." You have to?" My brows furrowed. "Were you forced to take care of me?" Tell me and I promise to do something about it, don't want to be the reason why you're not with your son.

"You silly girl," she laughed. "No! I do it because I need to earn money, that's all."

"Ahh okay," I nodded like a lost child. She burst into laughter. "What's funny now?"

"You! You look adorable when you nod like that."

"Ugh, why does everyone say that? Even my annoying mom says it. Miss Kim too…"

"Wait, who's Miss Kim? "I met her at the hospital."

"What happened to you?"

"I have leukemia. It's genetic… um, I think it's called GSPD. I need a bone marrow transplant."

Her smile faded. "Oh, sweetheart… But your real parents only they can donate that. But you were adopted… how are you going to survive?"

"I haven't really thought about that," I whispered. "Don't worry. I'll be fine.""You sure? "Yes. No need to worry." "Alright. Well, my son Jake is visiting today. I think you two will get along."

"Argh! I've never had a male friend before, and according to my sources, boys are annoying." She chuckled. "I'm sure you'll like him. He's a good kid."

"We'll see…"

I was walking down the stairs, humming softly, when I slammed into someone hard.

"Ouch! Watch where you're going!" I snapped. "Who are you?" Can't you watch your step?" he barked back. The audacity! You barge into my house and dare say that? How rude! Apologize to me this instant!"

Jake blinked, startled by the fire in my voice. "Okay, okay… you little… I don't even know. I'm sorry. Please… for… give… me?" Why are you dragging the words like that? You clearly don't mean it."He smirked. "Anyway, who are you? "I'm Aurora. The daughter of this house." He tilted his head, arms folded. "Ah, so you're the spoilt brat."

"I'm not a brat! Mind your words. I can get you kicked out with just a snap of my fingers. Stay away from me!" I stormed off, fuming.

He watched me go, amused. "This girl is fire… and beautiful too." JAKE!" Sadash's voice interrupted his thoughts. "Mommy!" Jake ran into her arms. "Oh, how I missed you!" she gushed, enveloping him in a tight hug. I'm good, Mom. Don't worry."

"Well, from now on, you'll be staying here with me. "WHAT?!" I screamed from the stairs. "But why?!"

"Why not?"

"Because—" My words tangled in my throat as I saw her again… this time, fully. Her eyes locked with mine. The girl I'd just insulted… she looked right through me. The sun highlighted her sharp features, and for a moment, my heart skipped.

His gaze traveled slowly to my long, black hair that fluttered as the wind crept through the open window. He muttered under his breath, "She's even more beautiful up close…"
