Xu Yan Monk is definitely not unclear in the head; he doesn't believe in Xiang Qianqiu's promises at all, nor does he want to become any State Preceptor or establish any Dao lineage.
Over two hundred years ago, during the turmoil of Spirit Mountain, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva ventured into the Demon Dao and was suppressed beneath Spirit Mountain, and he was the Arhat closest to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.
He once had the opportunity to be promoted to Bodhisattva, having been guided by him many times.
After Ksitigarbha was suppressed, he harbored doubts and wished to see the Buddha to plead for Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, but was rebuked by Manjusri Bodhisattva and had to chant sutras for thirty years before being forgiven,
Yet the thirty years of sutra chanting for peace of mind did not quench his thoughts. Seeing himself at odds with Spirit Mountain, he left Spirit Mountain, transforming into Xu Yan, meaning false words, and has not returned to this day.
