DEVIN'S POV
I left Xavier's house mad. I couldn't say a thing because they all believed I knew something about Emily's disappearance.
I stood in front of my mirror and ran my hands through my hair. I was trying to calm myself down but it wasn't working. I stared at the pictures I hung in the mirror.
I was trying to find out who was responsible for Emily's disappearance. On the mirror, I hung pictures of James. He was the prime suspect and the first person I suspected when Xavier called me. Xavier's picture was also there. I had a feeling that he knew something about it and I was going to try my best to find out the truth.
Also by the edge of the mirror were Nigel, Gabby, and Eva; The queen bees. They could have a hand in Emily's disappearance because they hated her so much and would do anything to get her out of their way, especially after Nigel's video went viral. She felt humiliated to see videos of Emily beating her ass all over the net.
I felt mad at myself for taking the 800$ from Emily's Mom but I didn't have a choice. I didn't want to get her mad or make her feel I didn't want to help. I couldn't help but wonder how Xavier got such an amount of money. What was he doing that got him so much money?
I fell to my couch and used my hands to cover my face. I exhaled and looked at the ceiling. I was hoping I could fall asleep because I haven't had a good night's rest in days. Most of the nights, I just stayed up trying to decipher her disappearance. I tried being a detective and it was all done in exchange for my sleep.
I fell asleep after minutes of glancing around. I was still asleep when I heard footsteps. I had no idea whose footsteps it was but I knew I needed to find out.
My eyes flickered open and my gaze fell on James. He was with two of his hefty bodyguards and they all marched toward me.
I jolted up and looked at him. "What are you doing here James?"
He smirked and turned to me. "Ain't you happy to see me?"
"Listen, James, I don't want to be a part of your games anymore. Just fucking leave me alone."
He sat on the chair opposite me and touched his jaw. "I'm going to help you legally leave this country," he said. "I'll get you a good job too with an attractive salary. Since you are done with high school, I can help you can earn from doing the right thing."
My brows arched as he talked. He was still smirking and making chuckles. I thought about his offer, he was right. I was done with high school and needed a good job. I couldn't depend on fighting for a livelihood.
He saw the look on my face and explained better. "I want to offer you a good job and help you leave the country."
"Did you kidnap Emily?" I asked angrily. I just realized my prime suspect was here and I was yet to confront him about her disappearance.
"Did I?" He asked smirking.
Before I could say anything, a punch landed on my face making me turn. I growled in pain as his bodyguard punched me repeatedly.
"Just a warning, Devin."
I looked at him with blood dripping from my torn lips. What was the warning for? He knew I suspected him.
"Stay clear from the case, I'm warning you."
His bodyguard pushed me to the wall and I hit my arm on the floor. "Fuck," I roared. The pain was intolerable and I couldn't help it.
James walked out and his bodyguards followed. They left my house without any more words and slammed the door behind them. I struggled to stand up for a while before I finally did.
My eyes caught a bag on the chair so I moved closer to it. I looked inside the bag and found a brand new phone and an envelope. I opened the envelope and read what was on it. I turned the phone on and the welcome message was 'You have three days to decide or I would do anything.'
I swallowed hard as I read the message, it was from James. He left these gifts as a reminder and as a threat. I tossed the bag say and huffed in anger.
I thought of calling Emily's Mom but I was scared she was going to be so worried. I didn't want to add to her stress so I opted for calling Xavier instead. I called his number and when he picked up, I placed the call on loudspeaker.
"Xavier."
"What the hell do you want?" He fired.
"Listen, I need to see you. We need to talk."
"I don't have time for—"
"Please Xavier, it's really urgent and I need to see you in a few minutes. Just a few minutes, I won't take more than that."
Xavier went silent for a while before he spoke. He agreed to see me and ended the call immediately.
I shoved my phone into my pocket and turned to the bathroom. I cleaned my face and spat out blood. I rinsed my mouth and cussed James.
I left the house and headed to the location we agreed on but I noticed I was being followed. I changed my direction and walked to a game store. I brought out my phone and texted Xavier. I told him I was going to meet him later but he said he was already there.
Damn, I didn't realize he still had promptness in him. I checked for the men and when I saw they weren't in sight I walked away.
Xavier was only a few steps away from me but he looked drained. I had no idea what made him look that way.
"Hey," Xavier said and came closer to me. He was acting strange and I couldn't place it. He moved to my side like he wanted to hug me and that was the weirdest thing.
I wondered why he was trying to hug me but I let him and, "shit!"
Xavier punched me with an object he was holding. I bent trying to hold my stomach. I kept howling in pain, cussing, and huffing.
"Stay away from Emily, stay away from my family."
Was he being serious? I wasn't even doing anything yet. I was only trying to help them find Emily, I wanted her to return home too but Xavier was making a fuse about my efforts.
