Wura began to cry, tears fell down her eyes. There was a menacing feeling in her bones, she felt sick in her stomach.
"Liam?" Wura whispered again. She heard nothing at all. Her mind was telling her that beyond the valley, there was nothing but a graveyard filled with burned bodies and unrecognizable corpses both from their side and the enemies.
Wura felt a tight feeling in her chest. She did not know what to do, she had neve been as confused, scared, in dread, terrified and as uncertain as she felt now. All these emotions overwhelmed her. She could not think clearly, she was like a resounding echo.
"Liam," she called again. She knew she would receive no reply, she could not hear anything, the entire valley continued to be still.
"Liam!!" Wura called at the top of her lungs. She screamed and tears fell down her face. It was as if she was mindless, she knew nothing else to do than to call his name continuously. To shout it and scream it until she received a reply as uncertain as that sounded.
"Liam!!!!" she called loudly. She began to cry bitterly, her knees fell to the ground, she was weary, tired. She felt her knees sink into the ground, her fingers grabbed the soil as if she was grabbing the collar of the earth.
She continued calling, screaming in hope, despite something telling her that no matter how much she screamed and shouted, she was not going to receive any replies.
"Liam, please, I beg you my love, I beg you, do not tell me that you are gone, do not dare tell me that you are gone," she cried. Her words came out muffled and unclear. Tears flooded her eyes and dripped down her cheeks.
"If you are gone, I cannot take it. There is nothing else for me to do, there is no reason for me to live, especially not when we were not in good terms. I would rather be gone with you than to have to spend the rest of my life without you!".
"Liam, please... please...." she called, she cried. Her mind was a mess, everything was a mess right now. Nothing could describe how she felt right now, no one could feel how terrible she felt right now. She genuinely wanted to die, there was no more meaning to anything anymore.
The world had lost its colour, its brightness, its happiness. It was all grey in her eyes.
"I had you, and then I lost you..." she said painfully. "I can never forgive myself for that... never.".
"I love you, I needed you, and you needed me... we have been through so much, so very much, and now it cannot all just end like this... it cannot end in tragedy like this," she cried.
She held herself in her arms and sobbed bitterly. Her eyes were closed, her sobs were loud, there was no one that could comfort her in this moment. To think that everything she had hoped, everything she had prayed. All the turmoil, all the problems she had faced, all for it to come to this moment... it was just too much for her to bear.
"I never wanted anything like this to happen, I did not mean to be stubborn, I did not mean to be unwilling, but after some time, I started to love you, I started to know you and my soul longed for you from the first day we were separated, even till now, my soul longs for you, it wants to be joined to you.".
Wura was so lost in her anguish, she could not feel or hear anything else. However, there was something that caught her attention, it was the sound of footsteps approaching. They were slow and sturdy, in no rush.
At first Wura was scared, she thought that maybe it was one of the enemies that had managed to survive. She was afraid, maybe he was here to kill her, but then, she thought that if he was truly here to kill her, it would be better to die at this moment.
She mustered up all her courage and looked up. Her eyes were teary, she was ready to accept her fate. She was ready to die if it meant being able to see Liam one last time. She was ready to stop feeling the pain she felt right now, but not ready for what she was about to see.
There he was, Liam, he approached her, his hands covered with blood and a little present on his face. His sword was bloody, his shield as well. His horse was nowhere to be found and he seemed to be the only one.
Wura rubbed her eyes, she could not believe if what she was seeing was true. She wanted to know if she was dead already, because the man she was seeing... he had to be a ghost.
She was paralyzed, she could not move out of fear, shock and doubt. Her eyes were opened wide, they were glued to his every movement.
Liam looked up, he saw her there, on her knees, crying. He did not know what washed over him, but he dropped everything in his hands, his steps became faster as he rushed towards her, he ran and embraced her tightly.
Wura began to cry even more, she was frozen, the more she felt his warmth, the feel of his skin, the breath in his lungs, she was convinced that she was not dead, he was not dead, they were not dead.
"You... you... Liam..." she called out sobbing.
"I am here now, it's me," he whispered. He held her tightly, not wanting to let go.
As soon as Wura heard his voice, she melted, her cries became louder, she held him tighter and was no longer able to control herself.
"Liam, it is really you... you are alive," she wept piercingly. All the emotions that had been on the inside found a way out through her tears.
"Yes, I am here, Wura, I am so sorry, so very sorry." Liam found himself repeating the word sorry over and over again. Tears began to fall from his eyes, hearing her cry, feeling her shake in his arms, it made him feel so guilty, so scared, and yet so relieved all at the same time.
"I thought that I had lost you again, I thought that this time, you would not return," she cried.
"You can never lose me, Wura, never, I promised you that I would always be there for you, and I promised you, that I would come back, I never break my promises, never," he cried.
"You... you..." Wura could not longer form her words, she became incoherent, she cried like a baby, her tears were uncontrollable.
"It is alright, I understand, let it out, just let it all out," he said.
She held him tighter, afraid that if she was to let go, he would disappear and this moment would be a dream, a very shattering dream.
"I am so sorry, Wura," Liam repeated. He caressed her hair. He knew just how much she had been through. All the things she had to face in his absence. Right now, nothing else mattered to him than her. He let go of his pride, of his hurt, his anger and just focused on the woman he loved with all his might.
"I was so scared," she said.
"I know, but everything is fine now, everything has ended, everything is done now. There is no more threat, no more danger, there will be peace. Rest assured, everything is going to be alright, I promise you," he coaxed her while she continued to cry.
It felt like all the days and nights alone, all the long mornings and evenings without him, all the anger and sadness that had been pent up, suddenly erupted, leaving her no choice but to express it all at once.
"Never leave me again, Liam, never leave me, I beg you," Wura cried. Nothing could express the relief and fear she felt once she saw him, she had expected the worst. She was too stressed and scared to pray, and yet, it seemed that all the prayers she had been uttering for the past months had finally been answered.
"I will never, I promise you. I have no intention of leaving you ever again, Wura, never again," he replied. He rubbed her back and held her tightly, they were kneeling on the ground together, it was not uncomfortable, no, not as long as they had each other in their arms.
"I love you so much, Wura, I love you so much," he cried, his eyes were red and he sniffed. His men began to appear behind them.
"I love you so much, Liam, so very much," she said. She sniffed and kissed him. He leaned in deeper to her kiss as they savoured the moment.
