Seven Sins System Chapter 501. Torturing And Healing
Puriel's expression softened for a moment, though her pride kept her from fully admitting fault. She glanced at the closed door, the tension still hanging in the air between us. "Loyalty is one thing," she said quietly, "but you don't have to glare at everyone who isn't on your side."
I shrugged, not really in the mood to argue further about the dynamics between Red and Puriel. "She'll get used to it eventually. For now, we focus on the task at hand."
Puriel fell silent for a moment, her gaze distant as if she were considering something far away. I could see the wheels turning in her mind, but I was distracted by my own thoughts. Especially about the ancient demon inside me. 'Damn… I'm really a huge problem,' I thought.
After that brief exchange, Puriel and I didn't talk much. We had both retreated into our own thoughts. She seemed to be mulling over our conversation, and I… Well, my mind kept drifting back to the ancient demon slumbering inside me.
Deciding to distract myself, I picked up a book from my desk and began reading, trying to focus on something mundane. Puriel remained silent, sitting near the window, her gaze flicking over to me occasionally, as if she was expecting me to do something more sinister than just read.
We had fallen into a strange, almost peaceful routine when the door to the infirmary creaked open. A student shuffled in, his face pale, his steps sluggish. He looked like he could barely stand, his body swaying as he approached.
"Dr. Allen?" he croaked, his voice weak.
I glanced up from my book, closing it slowly and setting it aside. "What's wrong?"
"I think I've caught a cold," the student muttered, wiping his nose on his sleeve. "Been feeling awful since yesterday."
I stood up and walked over to him, giving him a quick once-over. His skin was clammy, and he was clearly feverish. Standard stuff, really. "Alright, have a seat," I said, gesturing to one of the infirmary beds.
He collapsed onto the bed, looking like he was about to pass out. I retrieved a small vial from my desk, one of my concoctions. Not a typical over-the-counter medicine, but something brewed with my Devil's Craft. It was effective, too effective, actually, which is why I always dialed back its potency when dealing with mortals. After all, I wasn't trying to raise suspicion.
"Take this," I said, handing him the vial.
The student looked at it warily but was too tired to question me. He swallowed it down and lay back on the bed, his body already succumbing to the medicine's effects. Within minutes, he was fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. He'd wake up in a few hours, completely cured, no doubt wondering how he recovered so quickly.
I went back to my seat and could feel Puriel's gaze on me. She hadn't spoken a word since the student had come in, but her eyes followed my movements, like she was trying to figure out if I was going to do something nefarious.
Finally, I couldn't ignore her any longer. "What?" I asked, half-amused, half-exasperated.
She raised an eyebrow. "I didn't say anything."
"You didn't have to," I replied, leaning back in my chair and crossing my arms. "You're staring at me like I just poisoned that kid."
Puriel didn't deny it. Instead, she leaned forward slightly, her voice calm but inquisitive. "What exactly did you give him?"
I smiled faintly, shaking my head. "Relax. Just something I made. A mixture that'll knock him out for a few hours, let his body recover faster. When he wakes up, he'll be good as new."
Puriel frowned, clearly unconvinced. "And what exactly makes it work so fast?"
"My craft," I said bluntly. "A little something I whipped up. You think I sit here all day and do nothing? I'm a doctor, Puriel. A good one. But if you're worried about me experimenting on mortals, don't be. I don't need to mess with them to do my job."
She leaned back, still watching me with that same cautious look, as if she didn't fully believe me. "You say that, but it's not exactly in a devil's nature to heal."
I shrugged, not really surprised by her skepticism. "You forget, I'm more than just the Lord of Wrath. Healing, punishing, crafting, it's all part of what I do. Just because I have a certain… reputation doesn't mean I can't be useful."
There was a moment of silence as she absorbed my words. I could tell that she was still trying to reconcile the image of me, the one who reveled in chaos and destruction, with the one sitting here in a doctor's coat, tending to sick students.
"You confuse me," she finally said, her tone almost grudging. "One moment you're talking about enjoying the suffering of souls, and the next, you're… healing a mortal like it's nothing. How do you balance that?"
I glanced at the student lying on the bed, breathing peacefully. "It's not about balance," I said after a moment. "It's about roles. Right now, I'm here as a doctor. It's my job to help them, so I do it. When I'm in the Shadow Realm, it's a different story. There, I'm the punisher, the devil. I don't mix the two."
Puriel's gaze softened, just a bit, as if she was seeing something she hadn't expected. "And you don't find that… conflicting?"
I shook my head. "No. It's just how things are. Mortals, angels, demons, we all play our parts. This is mine, for now."
She didn't reply, but I could see the wheels turning in her head. For once, it seemed like she was starting to understand that things weren't as black and white as she'd always believed.
The student stirred in his sleep, mumbling something incoherent before settling back into a peaceful slumber. I glanced at Puriel and saw her watching the kid, her expression softer than usual.
"You're not so bad at this," she muttered under her breath.
I smirked, picking up my book again. "Told you. I'm full of surprises."
