For several moments, Evan remained motionless beneath the storm.
Heavy rain poured from the darkened skies above, drumming against the stone-covered ruins of Oradiff and washing over the enormous corpse sprawled across the city square.
Thunder rolled endlessly overhead, its deep rumble blending with distant explosions, coming from the battle occurring beyond the horizon as defenders fought desperately to hold back the monsters attacking the surrounding satellite towns.
In the middle of it all, Evan simply stood there in silence.
The Vanquisher slipped from his grasp and fell, hitting the stone-covered ground and bouncing once before coming to a stop.
A second later, Evan's legs gave way, and he dropped to his knees.
Rainwater splashed around him as he knelt there, staring blankly at the ground below, his grey eyes lacking focus.
No thoughts went through his mind.
Or rather, he was forcing himself not to think.
