Chapter 1 - Cold Wrath

A tense silence hung in Alhaji Abdallah's expansive sitting room, the kind that presages a tempest. The air was thick with unspoken judgment, every eye fixed on Amara as if willing her to reveal her inner turmoil, so they could gauge her reaction.

Strangled by invisible hands, the young lady sat frozen, her voice choked off and her breaths ragged.

Her anger was no mere flame but a searing lava coursing through her veins. Her chest felt bound by iron chains, and every inhalation was a struggle against the suffocating rage within.

As her control neared its breaking point, Amara abruptly stood, her eyes piercing each one of them with a glare that spoke volumes of her disdain. With one final, scathing look, she stormed out, seeking refuge in her room, the only safe haven she had left.

Inside, the walls of her room bore witness to her unraveling. She hurled objects from her dressing table, each crash of shattering perfume bottles a manifestation of her inner disintegration. Tears streamed down her face, hot and unchecked, as she collapsed into a desolate heap on the floor, hugging her knees tightly. "How could they?" was all she could say at the moment. The two people she trusted most poured sand into her eyes. Her heart ached with betrayal, and she rocked herself, overly desperate to escape the agony. Sleep eventually claimed her, but it was a troubled, restless slumber.

The creak of the door jolted her awake. It was her brother, she didn't need to see him to know; his distinctive scent filled the room. "What are you doing to yourself, Amara?" His voice was thick with sorrow, though the words were a futile echo against her numbness.

She kept her swollen eyes cast downward, ignoring his presence entirely, which only served to inflame his frustration. The clock's ticking seemed louder in the charged silence as he gripped her roughly, pulling her to her feet. "You're already married to him. You'll go with his family peacefully when they arrive tomorrow," he commanded, his fingers digging into her arm with a vice-like grip. The warmth in his voice had evaporated, replaced by a cold, unfeeling menace. standing before her was another person entirely, not the brother that once showered her with love and care.

Infuriated, she yanked free from his hold, her voice rising in a raw, hoarse scream that drained her throat. Taking a deep breath, she walked the small distance between them and poked at his chest repeatedly as she said every single word calmly,"I did not consent to this marriage! I am going nowhere. Find someone else willing to go through with this nonsense. I, Amara, refuse to do your bidding. And I hate you for this. I hate you!" Her calmness was a mere facade, masking the storm of emotions within.

Sha'aban's eyes hardened. "We don't need your consent to do what's right. If necessary, I'll tie you up myself," he spat, swatting her finger away from his chest.

"Right? You and father make me sick." She spat back, her voice cracking with rage.

In a swift, violent motion, Sha'aban's hand struck her left cheek, sending a ringing pain through her ear. "We've given you everything-food, clothes, education. You think these are your birthrights? No, Amara, they're privileges. Count yourself lucky, because thousands would envy your life."

His face, once fair, was now flushed with rage. Amara took a cautious step back, realizing that his anger eclipsed her own. His fury was palpable, a new and frightening force she had never before seen in him.

Sha'aban didn't stop there. His rage poured out in a torrent of scathing words. He advanced on her as she retreated, like predator and prey until she was cornered, his words like rained daggers. "You've finished your schooling, but refuse to settle down. You've never brought a man saying you liked him and we refused your heart desires but instead what did you do?. You've dismissed every suitor we've introduced with unreasonable reasons like having a big nose and mouth or ugly for your liking. Do you think you're special because you're fair-skinned and educated? You're not. You're just skin and bones, that will sag and bend as you grow older, like everyone else. In fact, you're ugly, Amara."

He stormed out, slamming the door behind him. The sting of his words was a deep, relentless wound. Amara sat in front of the mirror, her eyes swollen and red, the pain of his truth like a knife carving into her soul. "...but that's no reason to trap me in a loveless marriage, tied to an unknown man," she said quietly to her reflection.

As night fell, she lay on her bed, consumed by despair. The cruel reality loomed over her, yet a sliver of hope flickered within. She sobbed into her pillow, her anger spent, replaced by a desperate hope that tomorrow would bring a miracle. A hope that her father would walk in with a smile, revealing that this nightmare was all just a cruel joke.
